this.

was this the fella that LvG subbed on spot kicks?

Yup Let's all ignore the fact that he was first choice for most of the tournament except a 15 minute penalty shootout and a pointless third place play off

If we put a better defence in front of him than De Gea had then I think he will be fine.

Why? What is wrong with him?

He's not very good, too weak and not enough presence in commanding his area. He has some good saves in him like most keepers but the fundamentals that are so important in the PL are not in his game when I've seen him play.

So he isn't very good in the air then? He is prone to getting bullied in the box?

I'm genuinely curious, because I can't be arsed watching a goalkeeper feck about on corners for a full season.

Yes, he's weak when there is pressure on the ball in the air, something that is exploited mercilessly in the PL.

That horrible new keeper feeling again. It took De Gea 2 seasons to get accustomed to the coming for crosses and bullying of the premier league.

Oh dear. What an underwhelming signing. Is there no one else out there?????? I'd rather put Johnstone in goal for the season. We have all this money and we can't get anyone better?

Something de Gea never mastered, but dealt with that in the way that he stopped leaving the goal so he stopped making mistakes. Yes, he did improve, but he was only average if that when it comes to crosses.

Alos, he wasn't vocal at all, which made the job tougher for the defense. So I hope the next GK is vocal as it would help a lot.

I have seen him for Holland and he has looked decent. Any keeper that we buy would be a downgrade after de gea and will have one weakness or the other. Valdes will have his cross handling, lloris will have his proneness to errors etc. people who watch Ajax on here have posted he is a good keeper but hasn't saved a penalty. Plus he is older than de gea and people prefer a younger keeper. Both of which aren't exactly the primary attributes of a keeper. Is he risky? Of course he is. But we have frans hoek who is a top gk coach and if he thinks cillesen (if he is bought) is a better bet than anyone else then I trust him.

Lvg has bought only one Dutch player when we expected him to sign loads and that player is actually a good player. It's not a transfer of convenience for him I'm sure

If his major weakness is aerial, we should have gone for Begovic. His kicking is garbage, but he's a pretty colossal presence in the box. He's solid at the actual goalkeeping side of being a goalkeeper. Footwork, passing, distribution are secondary IMO.

Seems we've become victims of shiny new toy syndrome.

Two. Blind and Menphis.

Also, we could have gone hard on Cech. Yeah he may have never come, but I feel we didn't fully go for him as it was still up in the air whether DDG would be sold or not. I'd sooner would have had Cech.

Like De Jong,Vlaar,Van der Weil, De Virj,Robben etc I think he is just linked with us because he is Dutch.

Not shiny new toy syndrome. Just worried about him in the premier league.... don't want another season of heart attacks:(

I'm comfortable with LvG and staff making the right player decisions. Some may not be marquee names but I'm ok with that as long as they fit into the squad and do what he wants.

Yeah forgot about Memphis fora minute. Both were quality players too and Lvg told Memphis to stay at Psv and develop himself before moving. Imo He doesn't compromise on quality in his signings. He went full in for schweinsteiger to get balance even though we could have signed just Schneiderlin.

Cech was never going to come here. We may have tried for all you know but he preferred to stay in London. There was nothing we could do. He wasn't going to change his mind over money (as arsenal would also be paying him a very big salary, enough for him)

Actually most would like to simply keep our old toy, but I don't see how not wanting a mediocre keeper is something to use against people. There are no "Shiny toy" keepers out there, it's not even a position that gets the excitement going. I'd have been fine with a Begovic to tide us over until the right keeper came along rather than spending £20M on a lame duck.

He demonstrates this weakness in the Eredivisie, yes?

In the games I saw and for Holland, yes.

Personally, if we buy Cillessen I think there's a pretty good chance he will become our new long term keeper.

People pretending that they watch the Eredivisie week in week out, again?

Can we not just get Lloris. Good grief I thought LVG wanted a strong spine.

Lloris is extremely error prone. He is a good shot stopper and seems a good leader but he rushes out like a headless chicken many times.

I don't, I think he'll be like the hordes of keepers Fergie let through the gates between Schmeichel and VDs, he's nowhere near good enough for a club with the ambitions United have.

Haven't seen much of Cillessen but it would only be natural for us to feel a bit disappointed at shifting from DDG to someone with a less than world class reputation. He may well prove to be good enough but as is I'd worry that we'll see the return of our old GK problems....

My confidence in LVG's opinion on goalkeepers was not enhanced by him saying he had initially been unsure on De Gea either. Given how outstanding DDG obviously is, that's less than promising....

People acting like you need to see him 50 times to have an opinion. There are plenty of Ajax games on TV and the Dutch qualifiers were also all shown live on Sky, so when you add them to the world cup games most could easily have seen him a dozen times without watching the Dutch league every week, and a dozen times is plenty to have a view on the player.

There was actually a stat I saw near the end of the season that said De Gea caught the highest percentage of crosses in the league.

Im basically not scared of him missing the ball when he comes out anymore like I was in his first 2 years.

Possibly, or else he will assert himself as our consistent number 1. We don't know that, but I'm willing to trust LvG's expertise over the internet scouts who haven't seen him much and are only against him because he's not a "big name".

I hate this idea that we should treat a manager as some sort of infallible deity when all of them have a track record filled with as many duds as hits in the transfer market. I also don't get this whole marquee stuff, we are talking about a keeper here, not a striker. Like I said Begovic would do until we have time to look further and see how keepers like Leno and Oblak progress next season.
