January Transfer Window

We didnt (not yet anyway) panic buy low quality players and added a league proven world class player. Very good window, IMO.

If someone had said on December 31st that we'd only buy a single player in January, and it would be an attacking midfielder, I'm not sure anyone would have been happy.

Mata is a wondeful addition to the squad, but for me he's hasn't filled in the gaping holes we have preventing us from putting a real run together. I'm not sure if we'll manage anything else this window, but despite all the fun of Mata in a helicopter, I'm not convinced it will have been a 'good' window for us.

LB and CM remain such huge problems...

We should be pleased with new player in January of this quality, and not lamenting who we cannot get/haven't got because being negative gets you nowhere. A new signing such as this gives the dressing room a big lift in confidence which is what we need the most. Be grateful and stop moaning

I agree. It'll be a very poor window if anything. Mata is great, but he does not solve any problems.

Only Sir Alex coming out of retirement can solve "ANY" problem but it is impossible. No one player (or two) can come in and solve all problems. Be happy for a big signing such as Mata who is giving our players what they need>CONFIDENCE

It's a strange one really.

Our creativity in the final third and off the ball movement is something that is seriously lacking, but Mata's signing isn't the solution to our more pressing concerns in midfield. An absolutely world-class playmaker, but I wouldn't call it a successful window if he is our only signing. A central midfielder is four or five years overdue and such is our plight, we are in need of two now.

It doesn't negate a disastrous Summer window, despite his individual quality.

I think it's fairly obvious now that Moyes doesn't want a player of Cabaye's level. He wants to sign the top tier CMs in the mold of Vidal, Kroos etc. Those players are only available in the summer realistically. Hence, we really shouldn't be surprised that we didn't sign a CM this window. I wasn't expecting any incoming signings at all so Mata was a nice surprise. You might argue that we need a Cabaye right now to make top 4, but I personally agree with Moyes that we should only sign the top CMs rather than good but not great CMs. I don't want any more 'squad' players.

Exactly, we've a wealth of bang average squad players, why would he want to buy more when he'll have trouble shifting the current lot.

He's done the right thing, made a mega signing that'll help us kick on, and put the rest of the under-performing squad on warning. Their jobs are at stake(as they should be), and he's not afraid to spend big to replace them.

I agree.

Nothing is going to happen now is it, there's nothing concrete being reported. Will be a pretty dull day for us I'd have thought.

Was you not here in the summer!!!? Tomorrow is when we bid for everybody.

Any helicopters at the Manchester airport spotted yet ?

There sure is, and Moyes has been busy by the looks of it.

I'm happy we signed Mata. But that will not stop us getting overrun constantly in midfield.

Thats cheap, we should also bid we've got nothing to lose, worst case we would make them pay more.

It's surprisingly cheap but IIRC there were some news/quote that he favors Chelsea. Besides, I think we'd need a more established center half if we go for one. age-range 24-28 or at least experienced. Already waiting to see progress from Smalling and Jones, don't need a third player-in-making there.

Don't get crazy now Moyes. We don't want Ashley Young mk2.

What a load of bollocks. I hope it's not true, the last thing I want is the English media treating him like he's one of our own and putting a load of unwarranted expectation and pressure on him.

Net spend of the teams in contention for European football using TransferLeague prices for both windows this season(Not included unconfirmed transfers yet but will do so when the window closes)
City - £89,800,000
Arsenal - £32,500,000
Chelsea - £40,559,000
United - £66,700,000
Liverpool - £20,300,000
Spurs - -£3,800,000
Everton - -£16,500,000

Few points...

If Cities transfers go through which the are hoping then their net spend could take them over 100m which is absolutely absurd and to be fair it would be a travesty for them if they didn't win the league at this stage. Arsenal and United are similar in that they have big net spends due to big signings and in Arsenals case they've basically let go a whole squadful of players. Chelsea have bought a team of players yet to be fair to them, the buying in bulk has helped as they've managed to get hefty profits on people like De Bruyne. Liverpools net spend is decent, probably what you'd expect a team going for EL to be having (this isn't meant to be a dig). The Spurs net spend is heavily helped by the Bale fee as they've spent over 100m which is pretty mental. Once again what the transfers have shown so far is how much we overachieve in relation to what we can spend.

It makes Sixpences persistence to call us 'Loanerton' even more childish and petty considering we find ourselves in a situation where it's something we still need to do despite our financial status improving because of the tv deal, yet we still are 2 points ahead of a team at this stage who have a net spend 80m (give or take) ahead of us.

Tenous and flimsy source as i can't verify it, but someone i trust (as much as you fecking can on a forum) - reckons Coentrao is likely to be sorted tomorrow, and we are bidding for up to two midfielders tomorrow but prepared to be knocked back.

I would be surprised if we didn't get one more in, even on a short term deal. Otamendi at Porto is being linked.

Because it's that special time of year and because dreams sometimes can come true, I'm really hoping upon hope that on his way to the studio tomorrow Jim White is taken out by twelve snipers simultaneously.

Interesting. A newbie messaged me earlier saying that he's been told that Coentrao is a done deal, on loan. His source previously informed him of Scholes' return and Van Persie's pending arrival, apparently.

His name, assuming this is a guy, is CA1. Will be interesting to see what happens.

EDIT: "pretty much" a done deal. Don't want to misquote.
