January Transfer Window

We still need a top class CM by Friday if we are to go all out for the CL. I thought Mata and a fit RVP & Rooney would be enough to get us to 4th but I honestly don't think it will be, if we play Jones and Giggs we are going to lose more games this season. We are already a stage where we cannot afford another slip up but the 3 superstars are only 3 players and cannot make up for the others. Can those 3 win us matches on their own and help us keep enough possession in games as well?

The midfield we had out tonight is a mid to lower half Prem side, no debating that.

We played Jones and Guggs against the team bottom of the table.

We've got Fletcher who'll be rested and Fellaini coming back, Cleverley isn't ideal but is an upgrade on those two.

I think Moyes knows just how poor we are and is working to bring in someone else before the deadline. It'll be difficult though.

If football Vertex is reporting it and no one else is then i am expecting Reus to be signed before I finish typing this sentense

Feck the midfield, let's build a team of wingers and strikers (again)!

Im sure he is amazing and all that but I cant get that excited about buying a winger at this stage because 1) i wish we were focusing all our attention, 100% of it, on getting a midfielder and 2) getting a winger implies there are no plans to change the way we are playing, just to improve the personnel.

Not saying I wont be happy with such a signing, just that it isnt going to inspire Mata-esque levels of muppetry for me.

I disagree, the personnel is very important. Replacing Valencia with Reus, or Pedro - would not result in them firing 20 crosses in per game. This is simply not how they play. That said, we could do with some pace in attack without that meaning that we have to play Valencia to get it.

Reus would be nice. A lot of talk on Talksport about the Scousers buying Konoplenko (sp?)?

It doesnt really matter how quick he is, he plainly just doesnt have the confidence to attack space or anything properly anymore.

Fair enough, not saying its not important, saying it isnt my priority, Id rather we did some other shopping first before we got to that.

Yea, me too tbh. Just pointing out that I don't think getting new winger(s) would necessarily mean we will not evolve. Couple of central midfielders would be my priority, both who can cover ground, one with the ball and one without it. That would improve us no end, although impossible this month.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of his or anything. I just don't like the idea of us losing all penetration from our line-up. Teams could push up a bit against us and we may not be able to really hurt them in behind.

Why does signing a winger mean no change in the way we play? Very few top wingers actually play the way Valencia does.

Read the bold a few times and tell me when you realise why I bolded it...

I know what you mean. That's what am saying, if we get a top winger like Reus in, it automatically means we switch to a more modern approach as none of the top wingers play like Valencia does.

Yeah I agree exactly, our football is changing and it's leaning towards a continental outfit with quick passing, or trying to at least.. Kagawa, Mata, Januzaj..

Fair enough. I dont know how Reus plays, I cant remember seeing him play. As I said, no doubt it would be an improvement but not my priority. Id be happy with the front four people have been so excited about since the Mata signing was first on the cards, RVP, Rooney, Mata and Januzaj or Kagawa. Hence not quite as excited about another attacking player, when there is low hanging fruit (the fruit of happiness) to be picked by getting a great midfielder in who can liberate that four to get on with what they do best. That's all I was saying.

Yeah, I agree with all of that. If we're prepared to play a fluid system, we have enough options in the obvious 3 + one of Kagawa, Januzaj and Nani for the last spot. The CM is a much bigger priority.

I wonder if Rues is possibly the extra good news that Owen was talking about on Twitter. It's more likely to be Rooney signing a new contract though, which would still be amazing news.

Do you see Dortmund selling him in the midst of a CL campaign?

Edit: they already lost one first team winger for the rest of the season... no way they are selling Reus now.

Ill ask a different question: if we did get Reus would people envisage us continuing with 442, with RVP up front and Rooney behind him, with Reus on one side and one of our other wingers on the other side, with whoever - Carrick and Fletcher or Fellaini or whoever - in the middle? That was my assumption when I said we'd be playing the same way...

Reus is class. Absolute menace for defenders, regular goalscoring from wide positions and a fierce long range shot. Can't see it happening this window though sadly.

Mata - Rooney - Reus
----------RVP-----------

Is what I'd imagine. But it would be very fluid/interchangeable with Januzaj and Kagawa coming in and getting plenty of game time.

What is the point is signing someone like Reus when we have Kagawa and Januzaj on the bench.

How would we line up if we bought him
Yep, as above basically. Moyes said he wanted competition and Reus would certainly provide that. With all his great performances I think we forget Januzaj is only 18 and could do with a bit more rest than the fully established players.

Because he's world class. can never have too many world class players, especially when we don't have the greatest options out wide.

Kagawa has not set the world alight. And we need to be careful with Januzaj, he's still very young. Even with Reus, he'd get plenty of opportunities.

I'm sure we've been linked with him a few times, no? Don't know exactly what type of player he is, but he's a good free-kick taker (like Cabaye he's a good free kick taker but I think he's a more attacking player in general)

He's a more offensive player, although Newcastle have the likes of Tiote and Anita (and Sissoko even) who can play deeper. Perhaps they want Grenier in front of them.

Liverpool are close to signing Yevhen Konoplyanka from Ukrainian side Dripro according to Sky.

Just seems a bit of unnecessary signing would prefer us to sign a world class defensive mid
