January Transfer Window

Alright, name some.

You can't argue that some of the top talents have been snapped up over the past couple of years, many in the £20M to £25M price range and teams like Arse, Chavs, Shitty are well stocked whereas all we have done is overpayed for a player who doesn't seem to be able to play where & how we need him to.

What does that have to do with my point? I'm not saying we'll get one, just that it's ridiculous to claim that there will be no top CMs available in the summer. As you yourself have just pointed out, a few have been snapped up in every previous year - what makes summer 2014 any different?

And how do you expect me to name one? It's eight months away! We couldn't have predicted half of the big moves that happened this summer eight months earlier.

So basically two British players in that team.

Carrick would be starting not Alonso. Jones would get loads of games (with only a year or two before he takes over from Vidic for good). Smalling also would get plenty of games across the back four. Welbeck would be playing a lot in a variety of positions, and unless we'd bought even more midfielders to strengthen our bench, Cleverley would be getting games still too. Add to that the fact that the next youngster likely to get a chance to come through is going to be one of Lingard, Cole, W. Keane, M. Keane, Wilson or Pearson. All English.

I don't expect any signings, let alone major ones, in January. The club doesn't panic buy in January.

I wouldn't say that I don't expect any. I don't think a January signing is a signal of "panic" either. It's just a more difficult window to get the right player because of extra factors like whether they are involved in a league or cup campaign. On top of that, whatever club is selling will no doubt need a replacement or to be compensated accordingly.

It's not impossible for the right player to be available though. It could be that their club is out of the UCL and we want to sign someone to see us through in the league. It's a rare window because with the World Cup coming in the summer, it's going to be difficult to sign players let alone cheap.

Well it's too bad that British players tend to be overpriced and are a level or two below foreign players then isn't it? We're not going to suffer as a club because we want the bulk of our team to be British if there aren't any British players who are good enough, are we?

Unless its Phillip Lahm or Ashley Cole who's better than him?

How did he faired away from Everton? (ex national team)

There's a massive difference between a mid table EPL club and Manchester United. Just ask Young, Valencia and Fellaini about that.

You can have doubts over Baines' age and possible fee if we were interested in signing him (as I do - I think at nearly 29 and a fee of over £15m we might be better suited at looking at younger targets..), but I think most people agree that Baines is a top left back. Best in the Premier League IMO, he would be certainly improve our side.

And in regard to your other point, what about all the other players from mid table/lesser known clubs who have made the step up and gone on to be great players for us? Oh, and Fellaini hasn't even played 10 games for us yet FFS.

And yet you failed to answer my question. What has he done away from Everton (ex national team)?

There's no doubt that there's a big difference between fighting for a comfortable mid EPL team position and competing against the likes of Messi and Ronaldo for the CL. The pressure and opposition is totally different and that something many struggle in it including Moyesy.

I wouldn't use the word certainly. We're talking about Baines and not Ronaldo.

What a stupid point. Can you only buy players from other top clubs now?

My point is that just because he done great with Everton that doesn't mean that he's a top player.

He can still be a top player if he's not in the top 3 left backs. He'd be very close to my top 5 fwiw.

For someone to answer that question would mean he's been at a top club already. Following on.. For him to be at Everton now.. Would have automatically ment he failed at a big club.

Baines is a player both Moyes and SAF have tried to sign before and would certainly be our best LB at the moment (assuming he brings his Everton form with him). He's also a British player, something I don't think is that important but the club seems to value.

Between all of that, I wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him. He wouldn't solve any of our major issues but still, improvement is improvement.

If Fellaini doesn't prove that I don't know what does.

It proves nothing. Well, at least give the guy a chance. As much of a chance as given Moyes. People already stamping he's useless and shit. Come on, he has talent and tools to succeed, but even that may not be enough. Suffice to say extremely more talented players failed at United, Forlan, Veron and Berbatov come to mind, but others regarded as limited and even shit went on to have great times here, Fletcher as the most obvious one.

Valencia, really?

Valencia was one of our best players before 2012/13 so don't put him in that list, and Fellaini has barely played, the jury is still out on him.

You can't bracket Berbatov with those 2. He was top scorer one year Rooney didn't turn up

There were times when we used to consider top players those who perform greatly week in week out for years. Players like Giggs, Scholes and Ronaldo.

Honestly I was never truly impressed by Valencia. Ok he was hardworking and a great crosser but he always came accross as 1 dimensional winger who, at this level, shouldnt be considered as a first teamer. He's certainly nowhere near to his predecessors (Kanchelskis, Beckham and Ronaldo)

Erm can you tell me exactly were he had excel exactly? He's not particularly hardworking, he's not particularly fast and he's not particularly talented. In few words he's average. Fletch was a hardworking player, however no one would have spent 27m on him.

I've never said that we shouldn't buy players from mid table EPL sides. What I am saying is that we should be careful about them. Many of them come with a big price tag (20m for Young or 15m for a 29 year old Baines) which often is not justified especially when compared to players playing abroad. Also the gap between playing for the likes of Everton and Aston Villa and playing at United is enormous.

There's no hard and fast rule about that but normally I wouldn't like that our club get players from mid table EPL sides unless these players are young/promising enough to improve. That's why Id rather see United opt for Shaw then Baines.

If you look at the bigger picture (2014)

------------De Gea----------
Rafael-- Vidic--Evans-- Shaw

Not very much experience with Vidic injures being unpredictable.

I'd say that's pretty damn experienced. Rafael has played well over 100 games at the top level, Evans and De Gea well over 150. Before you even take into account Vidic.

Young does not necessarily = inexperienced. Evans, Rafael and De Gea are certainly more experienced in terms of playing at the top level vs the likes of Baines.

I'd only call Shaw inexperienced.

Exactly, Rafael has been around for ages and Evans will be 26 next year. They both have more experience than 90% of defenders in the league.

Baines experience is overrated. He never played in the CL, he never played under pressure of having to win things and his performances with England are a bit meah.

Three of those defenders have been playing in the CL and had been winning titles for years

Well, he is strong, particularly good in the air, and can pick a pass quite well. Not a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime at all, given he also plays in the first eleven of the Belgian National team. Not to mention his destruction of us last season. It's not his fault he was bought for 27m, that was United's choice, it's hard to blame him for that. And regarding the core of my comment, he had few chances until now, let him settle, give him games and time and then we decide if he's proven to be shit. The motto goes for Moyes, why not for him?

Jumping the gun after a four games, and forgetting he a very good performance at a CL tie at Old Trafford, while pointing out his poor performances, stating he's done is incredibly harsh.

Again, your "theory" proves nothing.

Not really. Dev asked, more than once- 'how has he performed for the England team?', in an opinion to guage how he has fared in tougher situations. A very reasonable question.

I'm a fan of Baines for what it's worth, I'm just saying Dev is no villain for enquiring what he's done at England level.

Bertrand Traore: Chelsea sign teenage Burkino Faso international
Chelsea have signed in-demand teenager Bertrand Traore.
The Premier League club fought off reported interest from some of Europe's top sides to land the 18-year-old midfielder from Association Jeunes Espoirs De Bobo-Dioulasso.
The player, who made his international debut for Burkino Faso aged 15, has agreed a four-and-a-half year contract.
Traore went on Chelsea's tour of Asia in the summer as a trialist, playing three games.
