January Transfer Window

Saw Gabriele Marcotti write that if FFP does hit with the required impact (big if), there may be quite a few elite players available for a knocked down price in June. Unlikely but still a happy dream for a club like us.

Confirmed on Twitter than David Moyes will be at the Moenchengladbach v Bayern game tonight.

Could be interested in Hermann/Kruse for Gladbach, or Dante/Kroos for Bayern perhaps??

With Mata, RvP and Rooney we suddenly look like being a attractive proposition for quality players again... Imagine if went and signed a world class CM now :devil:

This Kaveh guy on SSN is insane. What is with this guys mannerisms and his mouth when he speaks.

Not to be a spoilsport but should we have maybe tried to sign a CM with that 40m instead of Mata?

I dunno about you, but i think we've been poor to watch this season due to lack of chances created. Mata coming in is like a giant assist machine.

Yep, teams can get away with having fairly uninspiring midfielders if they have creative players further forward. In Rooney, Van Persie and Mata we have 3 of the best in the league. I know we already had 2, but to be fair we haven't lost a game they've both played (8) this season.

I keep hearing people say, 'United papered over the cracks with Van Persie, now with Mata..' sort of thing. A world-class attacking player every year if we keep ignoring midfield? hmm.

In all seriousness, I don't want us to panic buy or get another midfielder who's not quite good enough. But, the signing of Mata does for sure take some pressure away from the midfield and less creative quality is needed.

Yes, if that's all the money we have to spend, but most sources seem to indicate we have quite a bit more to spend, and considering Moyes isn't a moron, and has spoken about the need for players, I'm going to presume that's the case.

Why not get both? In any case, there aren't any CMs available in January that would elevate us to the level that Mata (hopefully) will.

You don't pass up on class players when they become available. Everyone was crying when Ozil was free to go to Arsenal without opposition and now we're grabbing Mata from Chelsea...without opposition.

Well judging at the figures, I'd say Ferguson spent in general very little in the past few years to ensure that there was a sizable war chest for the next manager. 70m (money spent on Mata/Fellaini) isn't exactly a war chest nowadays.

Wonder if Carrick's injury will influence what we do now. He's reportedly out for at least a month. That's bloody inconvenient to say the least.

Still, if the master plan is to conclude that piece of business Moyes had in mind originally (Fellaini + a top class allround CM) and this isn't possible until the summer, I'd rather wait than go for someone "lesser". If the front four click and we finally start producing some convincing, consistent attacking - well, Jones and Fletcher (with Fellaini coming back too) might be enough for the time being. It looks threadbare enough, though. Perhaps we could get someone in on loan - it couldn't hurt, so to speak.

Nah, we'll bring in a central midfielder this window imo.

I'm also clinging to the hope that if Arsenal do bid for Draxler, we'd match it. Some fun left in this window methinks!

The problem is if we rush out and buy a CM. And he's average then we'd have signed two average CMs.

Journalists saying that the Mata deal is taking a while to finalise because United are also in the process of signing someone else. Not sure if there is any truth in that, or even if it is in relation to the talk of Rooney being offered a new contract, but along with Michael Owen tweeting that there will be more good news for United fans after the Mata deal suggest there is something else for us all to look forward to fast approaching...

Which journo said that?

Bollocks to those journos.

Potentially, I'd say. I think Fellaini will turn out to be useful for us when the other pieces of the puzzle are in place. I see what you mean, though. Next season we will have Fletcher, Carrick, Fellaini and Cleverley. Add Mr Top Class to that - and Mr Whoever (the January buy) will make it six. It's overkill, really - especially when you factor in Jones, who can certainly do a job in the middle as a squad option if nothing more.

Mr Whoever would have to be good enough to start alongside Mr Top Class for that to make sense - and even then we'd arguably be overstocked on back-ups.

Yep, fully agree with that. The next CM we sign must be top class. No more squad players or stop gaps.

I agree. It's for this reason that I've eventually concluded, even though I really like him, that I'd regretfully sell Cleverley. I do think we need two more central midfielders, and given that Carrick, Fletcher and Fellaini will all remain, it would make sense to let him go. Five players for two positions is more than enough, especially when you consider that Jones can do a job in there, too.

Don't factor in Jones - if we have enough midfielders without him he should only be counted as a centre back and as a backup right-back.

I largely agree. But if Jones develops as I hope he will, he'll become a CB capable of functioning as a sheer DM in a certain tactical set-up - and as a back-up option in general. It's better to use him in that capacity than to add an extra body to the squad.

Aye - the thought has struck me too. I don't think he'll ever be more than a squad man for us - and I'm fine with having him as such in theory. But if he's suddenly competing with, say, Fletcher for what will be a 5th midfielder spot - well, then he's looking dangerously redundant.

Jones has got to start playing Centreback once we get a proper midfielder in.

Apparently PSG confirming they are in negotiations for cabaye.

Good news, if they get cabaye, less chance they gazzump us for someone better

It looks very likely that there will be players leaving Monaco. So even if we don't want one of theirs there will be a knock on effect. Moutinho to Atletico means Koke to us, or something. :D

That's a very inspiring way of looking at things. It's not something that occurred to me.
