January Transfer Window

People who expect a January signing are assuming that the players Moyes wants are available now. Perhaps he doesn't want to sign another squad player? And maybe the players he wants are only available in the summer.
Agreed and it's also the most likely situation right now. I still hope we sign a left back of decent quality though.

What I dont understand is why the feck did we not get these deals sorted in november/december. And then announced them as soon as the window opened.

Its seems that the time is never right for us, whether its because there's no value in the market, Moyes has started late, the January window is not ideal to sign players or there's the WC/Euro going on.

What deals? Who's to say there are any?

No, the right time was last summer (statement of intent by the new manager and the club post-Fergie, CM signing), but for various reasons, we didn't strengthen, and it's costing us big time.

Any deal. Instead of looking to sign players in Jan, we should have gotten them done in Nov/Dec and announced within the first week.

Or you know, perhaps the club decided that there were no suitable signings in January? You don't know what's going on behind the scenes so don't assume that the club is clueless and is thinking, oh look transfer window is open, let's only look for players now.

We wanted to bring players in the summer, this is a given. So we already have some targets, so why not just sign them in sep/nov and announce in jan? We will only lose six months. And if a player is good enough to make an impact for us, then it shouldnt matter if we sign him in Jan or summer as he is obviously suitable.

Thats why am advocating signing him in the summer? And just wait for the window to open for him to join us.

We are a big club, among the top five in the world. If we want a player and offer a suitable wage, we will get him. It doesnt matter if its Jan or June.

You said "What I dont understand is why the feck did we not get these deals sorted in november/december. And then announced them as soon as the window opened."

That's not signing him in the summer. And yes it does matter if it's Jan or June because clubs will most likely not want to let their best players go in January, unless you want us to throw silly money at them. You're also assuming the player wants to leave in January, an unlikely scenario given that in a WC year, it won't be in their best interest to move clubs and risk instability/settling down period at a new club.

On one hand you always hear the bit about any player would want to come to United, and how we're a huge club etc.

Yet we've had many summers where seemingly reems of top players seem to reject the chance.
Of course you never know how many are paper fabrications or not.

If I had the choice of our current squad fully fit and in form, or a Jan transfer it'd certainly be the former.

Without Rooney and VP we are pretty average,

Others team sign players in Jan as well, without throwing silly money at the selling club. If we arrange the deal in nov. it gives the other club time to find a replacement and only two months into the season wont impact them that much.

Any player we sign should have the confidence to believe that he will be a success here. If that is the case, then it will only help his world cup chances(more exposure) If he doesnt have this belief, no point signign him.

The time may have been right during the summer but we preferred wasting time placing unrealistic bids on a player who had no intention to sign with us. We seem pretty progressive (if not ruthless) in terms of bringing in money to the club and yet when it comes to signing players we suddenly become conservative as words like 'value', 'players should want to play for United' and similar BS kicks in.

Coentrao is the only realistic signing IMO. We'll probably prepare a bid in 2 weeks and maybe sign him. Other than that I don't expect there to be much movement, if it were to happen it would have by now - no point waiting in January when we have important games coming up.

It's never up to the buying club in January when they get their player. It's down to the selling club and if they can get a replacement.

We will get Coentrao if Real Madrid find cover.

Unless something exceptional happens, there's no way we're getting Vidal, not even in the summer window.

He loves Juventus that much, he's even got a sleeve which he adds to whenever Juventus win a trophy. He's a true believer and he's got 30 and 31 tattooed because he believes Juventus were unfairly stripped of 2 titles in the calciopoli scandal. Officialy Juventus have 29 titles.

He's only been with them for a couple of years, not exactly like it's his boyhood club or anything.

Just means he's a bit mental.

Good observation. He sometimes even sings part of our anthem with the fans, when our team enters the pitch. He shows huge commitment to the club. That does not mean that he will stay for us forever. But we won't sell easily and he will probably not force a transfer. So to acquire him any club would have to offer absolutely silly money.

We should have signed him from Leverkusen, he'd have Fred the Red tattooed across his arse by now!

People were calling for that at the time but we never showed interest. I don't understand how we could have missed a player as good as this, it was clear in his Leverkusen days that he was going to be special. He was close to joining Bayern, they wouldn't have got Martinez if Vidal moved though so they ended up even better off I think when it comes to addressing the needs.

Well I recall Fergie saying he'd never heard of him so maybe we weren't watching the Bundesliga so closely at that point, but I remember many here saying he was ideal for what we needed and at the kind of price that fit within our recent buying limit.

He really was. Our scouting network in Germany must have been poor for us not to notice Gundogan and Vidal, even Sahin (though he didn't work out at Madrid or Liverpool). Especially Vidal was such an obvious signing, there's no guarantee that he'd have picked us ahead of Juventus mind.

Now Garay is off
Transfer news: Manchester United set to miss out on Benfica's Ezequiel Garay

ong term target reportedly set for Russian switch4

Manchester United look set to miss out on Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay after Zenit St Petersburg reportedly agreed a deal for the Argentine. Garay has reportedly been a longstanding target of Manchester United's, linked with a switch to Old Trafford in several recent transfer windows, and was said to be clsoe to a move before Alex Ferguson retired. However now it appears that Russian side Zenit have beaten the defending Premier League champions to the signature of the Argentine centre-back according to reports in Portugal. According to local media, the Lisbon club have already agreed a £35m double deal that also includes striker Rodrigo, a former Bolton player.

While the news may come as a blow to David Moyes, he can at least console himself with the fact that Galatasaray have ruled out making a January move for reported target Nemanja Vidic. Manager Roberto Mancini said: "Every manager would want a player as experienced as Vidic on their team. "He is the type of player who can really make a difference, however, I need a player who can play Champions League football. "It doesn't matter how good he is I need a player ahead for the Champions League urgently and as a result Vidic isn't in our plans."

We were linked with Gundogan before he went to Dortmund, the thing at the time was he was playing more as a #10 for Numberg than as a proper CM, so we didn't firm up our interest in him.

There is no reason to spend money and fill the team with yet more average players. We have quite a fair share of them already. Saying that, surely we can get 1 decent midfielder to sign for us. I cant believe there are no midfielders out there at least better then Cleverly and cheaper than Fellani.

The agent of Manchester United twins Fabio and Rafael has been quoted by calciomercato.it as saying it is 'very likely' that both players can leave in the summer. Fabio is out of contract at the end of the season, while Inter Milan and Napoli have been linked with right-back Rafael. The Brazilians' representative Cassiano Pereira expects both players to stay until the end of the season after Fabio was linked with a loan move to Cardiff City. Recent reports have also claimed that Manchester United manager David Moyes is considering a move forEverton defender Seamus Coleman as a possible replacement for Rafael.

Selling Rafael would be insane, even though I rate Coleman highly.

Only defender i'd want ahead of him is Coleman and Everton will never sell him in the summer

Rafael and Coleman would be on par, Coleman's having a better season though. It'd be ridiculous to sell one to go for the other. Especially as you'd lose money.
