January Transfer Window

Would be daft to sell Rafael and buy Coleman. Coleman looks a good player and hed be great in addition to Rafael.

We need a good cover/competitor for Rafael so if the price is right then I wouldnt mind us bringing him in. However selling Rafael to get Seamus is...madness

If Rafael wanted to go then I'd say it's fair enough. Until that time comes though, there's no point in blaming the club. As others have said though, it looks more like Rafael angling for a move.

one must ask why so many players seems want to leave the club.

I can agree with this although I would be really disappointed if Rafael is angling for a move:(

It's probably all bullshit

We don't know who, if any, actually do want to leave. It's just this sudden need to believe everything negative written in the media.

thats true. However if the rumors are true then we are in trouble especially since we're struggling to bring new quality players in

I'd be gutted. Not only is he a great player and a fan favourite, but it'd add to the already huge amount of business that we need to do in the summer. I think we're probably already verging on requiring a level of spending that we just can't afford in one go.

It is worrying if true. As I just said, the sheer amount of players we may need next season is outrageous if all these players do want to leave. We'd need to eclipse anything City or Chelsea have done in a summer.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Coleman has been excellent this season, much better than Rafael.

He also isn't a perma-crock like Rafa and we wouldn't see Smalling shunted out there doing a poor impression of Wes Brown 2007/08.
Smalling gets shunted out wide because someone is unable to realise Fabio is just as good as his brother at right back...Even having a Coleman here instead of Rafael would never change that...

Even if United would that (which I seriously doubt), we risk of witnessing a meltdown with players taking too much time to adapt. Under such circumstances when we're forced to bring a good number of players Id rather see us retaining the few quality players we have then spend more money to bring more

Just because they're identical doesn't mean they're equally good at football. Rafael has shown that he's clearly the better player

I agree. I was talking from an 'if the papers are to believed' angle, in which they seem to think 90% of our players suddenly want to leave. Fortunately I'm pretty confident that isn't the case and we'd do everything in our power to keep our best players.

In 2011 Fabio proved he was just as adept as his brother at right back. Filling in for him perfectly in the later part of the run in for the domestic title and in Europe up till our humiliation by Barca in the champions league final. This notion that I said that because they are identical is as dumb as the notion that Smalling is any where close to him as a right back.

That was 2009. This is 2014.

I agree. However I fear that there's no smoke without fire and the fact that so many players are at the very end of their contract doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence

So what. Fabio is a better player now than he was then.

I've seen nothing to suggest that statement is correct and what do ya mean so what. You can't just make a 3 year old comparison and ignore everything thats gone on since. That's as bad as those that keep mentioning Fabio's performances in some U17 World Cup.

Maybe at one time there wasn't much between them but Rafael is the better player now.

Ignored what has gone on in what way? Fabio has been on loan at QPR and played regularly. Gaining both the required experience and game time to stake a claim for a place in our team this season. Instead center backs are regularly played out of position instead of him by Moyes and Buttner regularly starts ahead of him. a clearly inferior player to him. To claim what I said is in correct is a bad joke really...

Talk of missing the point completely. The issue here is Fabio being better right back cover for Rafael than Smalling, not Fabio being better than Rafael. We all know Rafael starts as out right back because he is our best right back period.

And i agree with you on that, all i was disagreeing with was:

There are alot of players that aren't good enough anymore and that need to be cleared out. On the other hand there are some players that are good enough but that will be considering their options in the summer (especially if we don't finish in a CL spot).

We have been in need for a big overhaul for quite a couple of seasons now, the worst case scenario happened in the summer (we changed feck all in the team). This winter I doubt we'll get anybody in (we'll be lucky if we'll clear out a couple of players). Moyes has deffered everything to next summer. We have a large amount of contracts that will run down, we'll probably won't end in top 4 (which makes signing top class players more difficult than ever) and on top of that its a WC summer. All ingredients for a disaster waiting to happen if you'd ask me. I don't trust Moyes and Woodward to deal with this in a succesfull manner, especially as we have to significantly improve ourselves and don't practice damage control.

Good post and I can only echo those sentiments though it is also worth noting that a big overhaul will bring its own problems in trying to integrate a lot of players into the squad at once - just look at spurs this season

It's horseshit lads, he came out on his Instagram account and said he isn't leaving.

We're not going to sign anyone in January guys

Time to cry ourselves to sleep

I don't think we are and I'd like to think we are trying but it's awfully cynical seeing Moyes, Neville, Round and the scouts photographed in the stands of various games around Europe this week. As if they wouldn't be able to draw up an opinion from god knows how many recorded matches availableto them.

To be honest, I've always been of the opinion that senior members of staff or, indeed, the manager himself attending games is more inclined to mean that meetings are taking place with either the club in question or the player's representatives.

I find it very hard to believe that Moyes would have travelled to Italy and onwards to France at a time when the squad is preparing for a huge game just to observe a few players and take some notes away with him. He's looking to do business.

With the teams in mind, however, I'd also be inclined to think he's doing business in advance of the summer.

I have no problem with this. Ideally we'll have most of our important big signings done by June and some funds left to get an exciting World Cup performer

Other clubs find transfers easy. Did Woodward accidentally send a text to every chairman in the continent calling their mum a fat slut back last summer or something and they don't want to deal with us any more?

We've had so many games over the last few weeks, every few days there's been a game and we've got midweek games coming-up - this week is too good an opportunity to miss for a European road-trip with Jimmy, Phil and the lads. I'm sure that's all it is, a well deserved jolly :smirk:

Because they stump up the hard cash required to get top players.

None of the others have pulled the trigger yet, so I remain cautiously optimistic. Really cautious. Like, an away at the Nou Camp cautious... Or a set visit to Corrie.

Who isn't these days? Nowadays we spend 28m on Fellaini so I guess everyone can pass the mark especially if he's working at the blue half of Liverpool

Seriously replacing Rafael with Seamus is a big step down.
