January Transfer Window

Well, given that we made 30m from the CL last season, I'd say it was pretty important to make sure we do not worry too much about the odd 5m extra for top quality in January. Add to that that if we fail to qualify it'll be harder to rectify the lack of quality in the summer and we might be back to square one, appointing a new manager.

Signing players during a WC year is much harder as well, so best to get some signings done now, even if it does cost us a bit more than usual.

Exactly I can see the summer being a nightmare too. You won't be able to think about signing players until after the WC, and the best players will be playing right until the end of the tournament. There will be speculation throughout the tournament and players will be saying "I will decide after the WC" etc etc. Then after that it'll be that they'll be on their holidays for a month etc with no contact, then they'll be in pre-season with their clubs and before you know it it'll be August 31st again. I can see it coming.

Failure to address the needs in the next month could set us back a couple of years. It is worth paying a premium on a player as if we don't make 4th this season then it's a disaster as far as I'm concerned. United not in the CL, it's unthinkable. It will have a knock on effect as to who we can attract, like or not every top player wants to play in the CL and rightly so.

agreed. and as i said- the summer could prove to be even more diffcult to get players we need.
last summer can hurt us for few years in the worst case scenario.

Also I think that €35mil figure doesnt include money you generate from match day.

Moyes will look at a loan signing - he's done this with Everton quite a lot of times & I reckon we will see something similar this January.

We are United, do we really loan players? Who would we loan from? Real Madrid I guess would be an option for Coentrao. But apart from that it would be pretty embarrassing to loan from a smaller club than ourselves. Larsson was an exceptional case of course.

If we miss out on CL, I'm 99% certain we won't get rid of Moyes. He deserves more than a year. Not as if he's stuck mid-table/relegation.

The WC factor is a bit overstated I think. The main muppet targets are all players we will have to compete with the usual suspects for anyway, World Cup or not. The price of certain players may rise a bit if they shine in Brazil, yes - but the players we should be looking at to seriously strengthen the team will be bloody expensive to begin with.

Ideally we should get the bulk of the business out of the way before the WC starts. That's doable if we lay enough cash on the table. It's not like every selling club out there will insist on waiting until after the final to do business, on general principle. The World Cup is mainly a shop window for those players who aren't already on everybody's radar, i.e. presumably not the sort of marquee signing most of us are pining for.

Agents will know their clients are just as likely to have shit world cups as good ones. In fact, the last few world cups have been quite shit generally.

But that's our hang-up. Madrid have borrowed players like Essien, Adebayor and Casemiro. There are always players who are out of favour or surplus to a particular club's requirements kicking around. It's whether there's anyone out there who we might fancy as a short term option, and who wants to come to us, that counts.

Got no problem with loans if Moyes and Woody know for a fact that they are going to get major players in in the summer. It would make sense it that aspect to get us the short term loan players needed to get us over the 4th place line. But what players who are good enough for us are available for loan? Of course it'll be easy to do a loan but the quality pool would be even smaller than the pool we are looking at for transfers.

Expect to see Buttner leave. Possibly Anderson too. I think we'll acquire a left-back, be it Baines or Shaw, and maybe Koke or Barkley or some other midfielder we've been linked with.

Literally 0% chance of us signing him in January. I would also rate the chances of Koke signing at less than 10%. Baines and Shaw could be bid for, but i dont see us getting them. I wouldnt rule out Moreno from Sevilla.

Think you're spot on with the departures.

my general feelings towards Eddie and Moyes and their capability to act in the transfer window are very pessimistic.

Woodie is a A-grade idiot in my book when it comes to buying players.

I don't think anyone will leave in January. We've no reason to let anyone go in this window, the summer makes more sense.

Based on our attempts for 3 players? One of whom he stumped up the cash and bought?

We don't have a clue how many Gill failed on because it was kept stchum.

We kind of do. We failed to sign shit loads of players, constantly only bidding to a certain amount of what we believed they were worth to then be gazumped by teams willing to pay more. It seems to be a United policy where we put a value on a player and won't go over it. Not Woodwards or Moyes.

That last day was crazy, there were stories of offers for Herrera, Coentrao, Baines, Khedira, Ozil, Bale, De Rossi and more. And we ended up with a £27.5m bog brush.

Shit loads of players?

We tried for Baines and Fellaini - Failed with Baines, ended up signing Fellaini.

We bid £22m for Herrera, they wanted the release clause £34m, we said no.

We made speculative and unsettling bids for Fabregas, he forced the club to commit to him.

And that bold bit is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Have a think about it, who do you think puts the value on a player? Who decides how much it's worth bidding? The only clubs in the world that goes above what they value a player at are the sugar daddies. The rest are now insolvent.

Shit loads of players, I'm talking about over the years with Gill.

It's not ridiculous, it's how we operate and have done for a while. I agree with the policy.

I'm going to wank all over the transfer window in January and then go all flaccid with its inevitable disappointing finish.

I've decided we're signing Morrison, Ribeiro and Moura.

He's not that expensive

This thread is going to get as busy as the Boxing Day sales this month.

I think Moyes will pull something off this month, I have a feeling. Not a major signing, but a decent prospect such as Luke Shaw or Will Hughes.

Still just catching-up on this thread, but this part of that terrible article by Lawrenson really made me laugh:

Lawro said:
United don’t get snubbed by players

Hardly a window (particularly in the summer) goes by without us being snubbed by someone (and we've got the threads in this very forum to prove it ) - where the feck does Lawro get this idea from? I realise many accuse him of being out of touch, but this is pre-Roman thinking, and it wasn't even really true back then. You can get players of course that want to join us like Fellaini or a young player who isn't really in much demand; you might even get the rare superstar like RVP or even Kagawa but to say that we don't get snubbed by players??

Anyway it's good nobody takes him seriously - other than the people paying him for articles such as that.

there is a difference between bending to Snejiders wage demands and offering lousy 25 mil for Fabregas.

no, based on a 25 mil valuation of Farbegas and crazy idea that he might want to leave Barca.
Not sure which part is crazier

You still believe we were just blind bidding without any sort of idea?

I think you'll find it's you who is crazy.

Do you honestly think we'd just bid £25mil for Fabregas. Fabregas and all the players in the big Spanish clubs seem to enjoy using United to help their contract negotiations.
