January Transfer Window

The press all seem to have been well briefed tonight on our "fear over Baines and Shaw"

What's the fear? My fear is that we will spunk as much on Baines that would probably get Shaw, a full back 10 years younger with world class potential.

I reckon we'll get Coentrao and nobody else this window. Barkley and Koke in the Summer.

That would be sweet. I'd be surprised if Coentrao is still an option though. Plus Koke would be a hard get.

Manchester United are being encouraged by Real Madrid to bid £12.5million Fabio Coentrao. Real Madrid are prepared to take a 50% hit on the £25million fee they paid for him. [Mail].

Would be a good buy, he can also play on the wing can't he?

Why would Madrid offer him a new contract anyway? Just so we have to cough up more money?

And they'd do that why? But this is Real after all so if they are stupid enough and he's going for £12.5m we should be in there like swimwear. Most top clubs in Europe would take him.

He can play on the wing, or as a CM/DM apparently, very versatile.

Interesting, I never knew he could play CM/DM.

It's a plus point in his favour definitely, however, he is not the answer to our midfield problems in the centre of the pitch.

To lower his wages and to ensure we don't have second thoughts and decide to wait to snap him up for free in the Summer. I'd assume his agent would have negotiated a lower release clause at the time, too.

I'd love to see him here, but I just can't see it. £12.5million is cheap as chips for him. We should be all over it. You'd think with him signing a new contract, they'd be looking at £20million+

Coentrao is only 25 as well, plus has experience playing for Real so he'd hardly be overawed here. Would be a popular signing, I think.

Yep, he seems to be an obvious choice for us.

Which is why we won't go for him.

the worst thing we could do is panic buy....

in the next few weeks with a bit of luck we'll have fletcher, carrick, cleverley and Jones available in midfield and a fit RVP and Rooney to join Welbeck and Hernandez.....

The current squad is certainly good enough to win more points than Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea over the next few months so it isn't necessary to look at short term solutions

If a top left back, centre midfielder or attacking talent became available or any player who is in Moyes long term thinking is achievable then great but the chances of this are slim

I'd prefer to wait until the Summer and get the player we really need rather than one that can do a job

This club is the complete opposite of panic buying, bordering soo much to the extreme its becoming painfull ! Anybody who says we don't need additions is just fooling himself, really everybody out there agrees this team is in need of quality midfielders and it has been for the last 3 years. Looking at our position in the league table and the quality of our football compared to teams like Liverpool and Arsenal we are in dire need of them.

Ofcourse its not the ideal time to get them, with it being in the winter and a worldcup coming up, but hey thank Moyes and Ed for that because they wasted an entire summer doing absolute feck all !

Seems to me like alot of people are overly relaxed and overly confident about our performance and our potential to improve it, we have had 4 relatively easy fixtures were we could snatch some points and all our other teams around us had some though fixtures (alot of one to ones) and thats why we recovered a fair bit of points. I hope we will win versus Tottenham, but I can see the atmosphere about the team and confidence about CL football taking a serious knock if we don't.

Coentrao would be a nice addition to our squad. At 25 and if indeed costs £12.5million then I feel we should really go for him.

We should also sign Tom Huddlestone. He would be an immediate fix to our midfield woes at a much cheaper rate.

Honest question - can Coentrao defend? I don't watch too much Spanish football, but when I do Madrid typically outgun the opponent to such a degree that both full backs are basically a second set of wingers. I think we really need a defensively sound player, rather than a major attacking threat that can't defend.

Seriously? Tom Huddlestone is nowhere near good enough for us.

From what I've seen he isn't that great at defending. I'd rather we get somebody that was like Evra in his prime though, or close to it. We've always played with attacking fullbacks and they are a huge part of our game. They can be just decent at defending if they're as good at linking up and going forward as Evra was. He'd be a very good signing because of that, and I'm sure he could improve his defensive side if he needed to. Fullbacks don't get any protection at all at Madrid though, and they aren't tested all the time throughout games, so it's hard to judge. Would much rather get him then Baines though because he's 4 years younger, and better at linking up with the winger going forwards. Baines has tremendous crossing and free kick taking which makes him stick out.

Ponders =I haven't really got a clue if Moyes is interested or not.

I wonder if the stuff being leaked from the club to the press aren't actually indicative of our intentions. In one of his UWS interviews Woodward implied that he understands a little bit better how the press operate in the transfer window, how agents leak things and people have agendas etc. I think the last window was a bit of a rude awakening for him and he'll be more astute in this window. He said something about one of our PL rivals buying a young player this season because they had been sent a document suggesting that we were in for him/had bid for him and they wanted to beat us to it - when the truth is that we were never in for him in the first place. I don't think the things leaked will be as transparent as they were in the summer. Not suggesting everything will be a smokescreen but I just think our approach will be more considered.

I think he's more ruthless then SAF. He fired much of our coaching staff without second thought and he had been more critical to the team until he noticed that it was proving to be his downfall. The tones went down but I doubt he's happy with the team.

Regarding Fellaini, we shouldn't sign him pure and simple. However its pretty evident that his best role is that behind the striker and he gives us a different approach to the game then Rooney/Powell would.

Finally I think that SAF was only ruthless towards players who didn't played his tune anymore. I can name you an endless list of players who overstayed despite it was evident that they weren't good anymore from Gaz to Robson right to Ando. Even Keano passed 1-2 years as a mere passenger and he would probably remained more if he didn't gave that interview. On the other hand SAF was absolutely ruthless with the likes of Ince and Kanchelskis who were escorted out of the team despite being on top of their game.
I think a few to many folk are writing off Fellaini far to early. The big guy is a very good player who was playing and trying to settle in a team that was feeling the effects of Saf retiring. Give Fellaini time and then judge him.

Are people feeling ok? I know it's a holidays and you drinking a bit more than usual.

But Tom fecking Huddlestone? There is a reason Spurs let him go. Far too slow. Great for 20 minutes until he is knackered.

He plays with two centre midfielders at Hull, who basically do all the running for him. Do you think we'd do that for him? Charlie Adam springs to mind at Blackpool. I cringed when people wanted him back then.

If we can't get a world class CM then in my opinion we shouldn't bother. We already wasted £28m on Fellaini. I hope we don't do more panic buying just for the sake of it. Can't get our main targets like Gundogan, Koke or Herrera then we better off waiting till the summer.

CM isn't our only concern. Need to get rid of a few wingers and get good ones, who are actual goal threats. There is a reason why we can't play 4-5-1. None of our midfielders are goal threats.

Perfect post. Bojan for manager.

I'd say it's worth checking Eredivise, frankly speaking, PSV's young wingers. Thinking about Depay and Bakkali here, naturally I haven't watched them as I've got no interest in this ligue/team or whatever, but I'm getting all positive reviews about those two.

I was never impressed by him. He suited Everton's direct game perfectly and exploited the EPL top clubs need to adapt to continental football with his height and physicality. However he's too immobile to act as a quality defensive midfielder, he lacks vision, creativity and technique to play a more attacking role and if you play him the Everton way in the CL he'll end up kicked out of the pitch long before the game has ended.

If you ask me, he may be useful as Rooney's cover as he gives a different approach to the game then the English international. However geez what a waste of 28m.

I'd look forward to a midfield trio made of Huddlestone-Carrick-Fellaini. We can put Sir Bobby in the mix and no one would barely notice.;)

In my opinion we cant keep on searching for a World class midfielder. We've been doing that for years and the result is well too evident as players either prefer greener pastures or the club simply refuse to cough the necessary money for it. In my opinion we should stop being so cocky. Manchester United do not attract the big guys at the very best and if we do we tend to struggle to either pay the neccessary transfer fee or give them the financial package they would want.

What we need to aim for are good players who'll improve the side and has the potential to become special players if well trained/we're lucky. Players like Vidal (pre Juve) would do great. Its highly ironic that many of us are so against the Cabaye deal especially when considering that our current best CM was more or less at the same level before signing him up (Carrick)

I like your honesty.

The contract will most likely include a clause. Madrid know they cant get 20m+ for him.

I think you misunderstood my post - I'm all for additions to the squad but we do need top quality and that is extremely rare in a January - I'd happily take Cabaye but with Anderson going out - we still need that special CM and we might need to wait until they become available

We were lucky that Vidic for example was playing in Russia who were on their preseason. we loaned Henrik Larsson during the Swedish preseason - we did well getting Evra but he took a while to settle in

I look at the age of the squad and I think we need to be buying special players in the 20-25 age bracket - it would be easy to sign Baines but I wonder is this short term thinking given his age

Cabaye is around 25 and many have suggested Carvalho who would improve us - Moyes messed up in the Summer and we could have tempted Madrid with a 40 million bid for Modric who'd have been a proper replacement for Scholes - I'd be back in for that Modric style player but I think we'd need to wait until Summer for yhawt

As I said though a Cabaye might be good with Ando going out - Carvalho has a 45 million Euro release fee - Herrera's is 36 I think - a lot of money for players who won't mm necessarily improve us a great deal

Well thanks a fecking lot guys. Some of you have managed to actually convince me that we're going to get Coentrao - I'll be fuming if we don't get him now :(

Ha, the dogs in the street know that Shaw is promised to his beloved Chelsea yet you still go on about it so you can have a nice rant when he does.

Skysports told us it was a done deal back in September. You really going to go through this feeling all over again?

the trick is to expect nothing and you won't be disappointed

I was rightly pissed off about Thiago in the Summer - all because of a fricking message on a football!! lol
