January Transfer Window

We'd be absolutely ripped off by other clubs because a) They charge the usual 'it's United' tax, and b) They know we're in a dire situation and are desperate.

Yeah but what can we do? This mess all stems from our poor summer. I will never understand how we didn't go for Thiago.

We should ride it out and do absolutely feck all if the right players arent available. Last thing we need is to spend 40m on players that will keep us where we are. a good deal for herrera is the best we can hope for. need to go all out and test the resolve of some top clubs next year and go for the very best.

I think that's what will end up happening, unless Baines forces a move out of Goodison, but maybe he thinks the grass ain't that much greener this end of the East Lancs.

As I said in another thread, Moyes dithered on Thiago because he was doing extensive background checks on him. According to a certain Andy Mitten anyway.

While I agree to an extent, it isn't really a case of if the right players are available. Nobody will start advertising top class midfielders for us to buy at cheap prices, it's up to us to find top class ones at mid table clubs, without spending 40m on them.
I've said it before, but ignoring all the muppet signings and looking at realistic ones, attainable ones and less then 30m, we'd be able to go for players like Schneiderlein, Pjanic, Cabaye, and I'm sure there's quite a few more out there right now. Our scouts need to get off their asses though and do something.

Moyes dithering? Nah. Couldn't happen. They called him "Decisive Davie" at Everton didn't they? ;)

good players certainly. but id prefer see us wait and sign players who will improve us over 3-4 years rather than a short term fix. who these players are, i dont know. as you say, the scouts have a big job to do. the likes of martinez, thiago, reus, gundogan, vidal is the type of player we need to find. or sign one of them

I worry about the amount of pressure that's on us to do well in the next couple of transfer windows.

Yeah I heard that and it still pisses me off. Thiago for £18m... it hurts.

Bollox - Thiago was going to play for Pep not Dave.

We'll never know what went really went on with Thiago, but I know (heard) that Moyes was asking for extensive background information e.g. lifestyle, training habits etc. He did the same with Pienaar as well. I do think that the Bayern board weren't keen on buying Thiago though, until that press conference.

Says he's looking to add to the squad this window. So no new signings then.

How likely is it that the Cabaye odds are so short based almost entirely on the traffic in his thread in this forum recently?

I've never heard of the Cabella chap, so he is definitely the most likely. The odds check out.

This window is far from the solution to our problems.

Agreed but I think it is probably the most important January transfer window we have had. Usually, we sort of just see what comes up but in my opinion, we have the strengthen in January.

I agree we need midfield signings (possibly a winger) but I just think this team is so bereft of confidence and ideas that just signing new players in the window alone isn't going to magically fix things.

The worst thing we can do is panic and spend a load of dosh on someone who isn't good enough.

We will find that the players that will really improve us won't be available.

If we want to improve our first XI in January, especially with the variables in the winter market, I imagine we'll need to break our transfer record next month. At least once. By the end of summer window, I would like to see us have broken our record twice anyway. The chances are, anything less than that will still leave the squad short on quality.

To sign for Manchester United in January
Remy Cabella 5/2
Ander Herrera 7/2
Yohan Cabaye 5/1
Everton Ribeiro 10/1
Cesc Fabregas 10/1
Koke 12/1
Ilkay Gundogan 20/1
Luka Modric 20/1
Wesley Sneijder 20/1
Kevin Strootman 25/1

What odds would I get on betting that none of those players signs for United in January?

That's my bet.

In case anyone else hadn't heard of Cabella or Ribeiro before...

Cabella is a 23 year old midfielder both us and Arsenal have been linked with. People at his club had previously said he'd leave if we bid 17m and they thought we would. Oh, and he's the next Zidane apparently...

Ribeiro is a 24 year old midfielder who was apparently Cruzeiro's best player when they won the league. Says some nice, video game based things about us...

Pretty sure most experts in Brazil are saying there is no way Ribeiro will be granted a work permit.

According to Thiago himself we were never talking to him. No contact at all.

Seemed like impossible in the summer, but now Mata is actually gettable. I think he's the type of player who can turn around our club fortune.

We would need to sell Kagawa for that to happen.

Of course we need a competent midfielder who can carry anyone from Cleverley/Anderson/Fellaini but I'd also love to see a fearless beast acquired in midfield too. Someone who immediately takes on the opponents' leader. Keane was absolutely perfect at this.

I thought Fellaini could maybe work in that enforcer role (he did well against Everton) but he needs a lot more mobility, mental aggression and drive. He's not an answer there.

I wouldn't see that as a big deal. Replace him with a player who's much better and who's proven in this league.

Obviously Chelsea would never sell to us, so it's all moot.

Who do you have in mind?

I noticed today that Blaise Matuidi is out of contract in the Summer - saw him once or twice for PSG and he looked fantastic

I don't have a set player in mind but I'd like our scouts to be instructed to look for both the natural ability (someone like Gundogan) and controlled aggression, the provision being that we need a new midfield, not just one position besides Carrick.
I like Schneiderlin for that role though I'm not sure. I'd also love for us to resign Pogba but there have to be plenty of options out there that improve on what we have.

But to get that character in the middle - maybe it's wishful thinking, there used to be plenty of those players in the game. Conceivably Jones can progress into that role, but that leaves us short of one potential center-back monster.

I wish we could nab a big, morale-boosting signing, but January in a World Cup year is a big ask.

I have a feeling if we sign anyone it'll be a loan. What players are there, who can do a proper job in MF, who aren't getting regular football in their current side?

It's a genuine question because my knowledge of football on the continent is lacking.

For left-back, have we been linked with Alberto Moreno of Sevilla? 21 year old left back, who has now made it into the full Spain squad and got a couple of caps. Could be an alternative to Baines or Shaw.
