January Transfer Window

It's not an idiotic thing to do! "There is no value in January" is one of the dumbest footballing expressions around.

I agree my reply was sardonic and is based around that fallacy. Of course there is value in the Jan market as long as you are after the right players, and with release clauses and contracts running down its up to the buying club to take advantage.

This time round I think January would probably be more value, particularly on the younger 'future star' players. Come world cup, you never know, some of them could have good performances and then prices skyrocket

Yes I agree. We should try and do all we can to do our business next month. The summer will be hectic and also, a lot of players will wait until after the world cup to make decisions, and clubs will also wait to see if they can raise the price on the back of a good tournament.I doubt a bad tournament ever seriously decreases the price of a player, but a good summer in Brazil and you can start adding the millions at will.

I'd like to see us go for Gundogan. I know we won't because it would mean gambling on his recovery from back injury, which is always a risky thing. Even so, if there was some magic way of knowing, I'd want us to make a serious attempt to get him in January.

Serious = offer to pay money to Dortmund and player. Enough to make both of them think twice before turning us down.
Serious = Moyes arranging clandestine phone calls/meetings to tell the player how much we want him.

I'm sure we won't gamble on the back injury though. We'll wait and see how it heals and go head to head with Barca or Madrid if it does.

I see no way of that happening and the biggest hindrances would not even be the sides of the clubs. Maybe United will be desperate enough to launch a big offer (large amount of cash + Kagawa) and if the eventual departure of Gündogan would already be final there might be a way of Dortmund accepting such a deal.

The player won´t agree to that, though. It will be hard enough for Gündogan to get back on its feet in a known system and team and under a familiar coach. Him transfering into a new league and new system 6 months before the world cup? Not gonna happen.

The Mail Saying that Anderson, Hernandez, Valencia, Cleverley, Welbeck, Buttner, Fabio are all fighting for their places with three-four expected to go in January. Also that Evra and Rio won't be offered new deals.

I wouldn't mind seeing half of them out the door to be honest.

I think we'll get a couple of loan signings in.

Sounds like the club have a plan of what they want to do over the coming transfer windows. That's good to see and will be a welcome change over the shambles of the summer window.

The guy with the Matuidi story can't even pronounce the guy's name correctly. From that I conclude that he knows feck all.

If Moyes is thinking of getting rid of Hernandez then I don't understand the logic. Can't argue with the rest though, I'd get rid of the lot of them as soon as possible.

Have to laugh at people who honestly think United are going to offload 4 players in January.

Well the logic is there imo. He probably wants to change the system we play. Hernandez is already not playing enough with our 442.

We've no chance signing the likes of Gundogan and Koke in january. I seriously doubt mangala will come and play for us too.....more realistic targets in january would be william carvalho if we pay a fortune for him, possibly fredy guarin but he may go to chelsea and then possibly yohan kebab....people as always are getting way ahead of themselves on here as to who we may sign....if we'd have bought very gettable midfielders like moutinho and strootman last summer for a combined total that would have been less than fellaini than things would have been rosier

If we don't sign people in January I can see the summer being much the same. It'll be the World Cup and then players will be saying that they'll be making their decisions after the tournament, lots of rumours through the tournament and then they'll be going on holiday for 3 weeks etc and it'll just drag on and on into the start of the season.

To be far to Moyes one thing i will give him is he is ruthless when it comes to getting rid of players. Shit Everton players didnt last long at all.

Would really like to see the club opening up its wallet and spending big, not on 1 or 2 big names (that aren't going to come anyway) but a real injection of some fresh quality.

Need to strenghten the midfield with one or two names, one defensive controlling player and one creative offensive minded player with a good pass. Need somebody for the left back to take over from Evra and would also love to see a creative new player for the the wings that can bring some swung in our game. If we can get those in January I think everything is still on the cards and the season might not be lost afterall.

My ideal targets would be the following:

-Fabio Coentrao from Madrid (LB)
Preferably a 6 month loan deal with purchase option, but if Real Madrid wouldn't agree to that I'd consider a straight buy. He can step into the team right away infront of Evra.

Estimated price tag: around €20 million

Alternative targets are Baines, Shaw and Moreno for that position. I'd rather not see us spend so much money on Baines because he is already 29 and alot of Everton fans claim that if we buy him he could prove an equal failure to Fellaini. Shaw would be a dream but I don't think Soton will sell him to us and he'll cost over the moon, beside that he has already said his mind is on a move to chelsea. Moreno seems like a good possible alternative but I'd prefer Coentrao.

-William Carvalho from Sporting (CDM)
Rumored to be the new protugese makkele, 21 years old and making a name for him self. Would be an addition to take over the CDM role from Jones so he can be put back to CB (wich is by far his best position). He has a release clause of €45 million but no way he'll cost that much (a year ago he was still playing in Belgium at Cercle brugge and no way he suddenly became that valuable).

Estimated price tag: around €20 million

Good alternatives would be Blaise Matuidi from PSG although i think he'll have plenty of options beside us and I also think he might just sign a new contract at PSG since he is a vital player for them and almost always plays (don't think they'll let him go). Should check him out though because if he is availble he won't cost too much money (end of contract) and he is a great player. Fernando from Porto is also a possibility for that position.

-Freddy Guarin from Inter (CM)
Offensive minded, good passer and he has an excellent shot for goal. He also has the aggression and strenght to be an excellent player for the EPL. Might need to learn to a bit less selfish (which is a minor point about him). think we might be able to make a deal for him with Inter because they are very interested in Hernandez and also Nani.

Estimated price: around €20 million, perhaps a deal can be made involving Hernandez or Nani

Alternatives for this position are: Cabaye , Rakitic, Strootman (no way he'll leave Roma so fast) Koke and Herrera (both of whom I think don't want to move to us atleast not in the winter).

-Cuadrado from Fiorentina (Winger)
Agile, Quick , excellent technique, a player for which you come to the stadium. Really think he'll be one of the best footballers in the coming years and we should go all out for him. To have him and Januzaj be our wings would be such a dream. He'll bring the creativity upfront which we have been lacking. Nani could do this role aswell, but this has been said for such a long time that I don't believe it anymore (just like with Anderson).

Estimated price: around €35 million, he'll be quite expensive but on the long term I think he'll defianlty be worth it.

Alternatives: Reus (but won't come), Salah could also be an addition but not as good as Cuadrado.

Players that should be put on the transfer list or should be loaned out:
-Zaha: loan
-Büttner: sell
-Fabio: loan (unless Evra would leave in the winter)
-Young: sell
-Anderson: sell
-Macheda: sell

Hernandez or Nani could also be sold, but only if we manage to involve them in a good deal for an important player or if we get a very good offer for them.

€ 70-80 million + Hernandez or Nani could get us these players. I think they are all realistic targets and the best thing all of them aren't CL bound so they could form an addition for our CL squad aswell.

Our priorities should be

LB=CM>>Wingers

For me the wingers (and Kagawa) will improve once they have a proper midfield. LB is a must in January. Evra is just plain awful these days

How on earth is Coentrao a good signing?

Pretty sure people have seen in one tournament and have since decided that he's a good left back.

He's a very good player who's not been helped by being a bit part at Madrid. Two, he's much better than Evra. Three, he's younger than Baines and just as good hence more value for money.

I'm still very much Team Herrera. Class player.

Agree Herrera is class dictating midfielder- I would still also look at Kondogbia. We also need a goalscoring attacking wide midfielder like Reus or Draxler.

Cuadrado would be a brilliant signing for any top side. He is a much better footballer than Valencia.
Better than on form Valencia (like he was today) no. Bettr than the usual Valencia of last 18 months yes, but then the only winger in the world who hasn't been better than him is Young.

Anyway personally I hope that we'll go for Herrera on the January. Again. And then in summer for Koke, Coentrao/Shaw and Draxler. They will cost together more than 100m pounds but will significantly improve both the depth and the first squad. Also, likely a lot of players will leave/retire so wages shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know if we will do that, but if there ever was a time to invest, that is on January and then on summer.

We can name all these players as much as we want, but there's no point. We have no idea who we're in for, and teasing us with "Oh we should go for PLAYER A" will only make us feel worse when we don't end up with that player.

Would you be laughing quite so hard if the players were Anderson, Fabio, Macheda and Bebe?
Can lose Bebe and Macheda and abviously will but given the current state of our squad, we can't afford to let Ando and Fabio go in Janaury, no matter how little they have featured.

January is the time to increase in the squad, not sell off. That type of business has to be done in the summer.

I think people expecting a lot of movement in January will be disappointed. Most of our targets will be at clubs who have something to play for, be it a CL spot or an European or domestic trophy. There will be players like Herrera who will be available but the price will be too high in most cases.

We might sign someone but I really reckon that there's more of a chance that we won't.

Even if we pay the clause, Herrera may be hard to get in January (unless he's really upset with the club). He's starting to be a key player for them again and Athletic have a genuine chance of getting the fourth spot and CL place. They've got more squad depth than their main rivals for it at any rate. I just have a feeling that Herrera may not want to leave them in the lurch mid-season, even if he's willing to move in the summer.
