I really like Smalling but he needs a run at CB, which he'll get under LVG. Evans is excellent with the ball at his feet but has too many flaws in other parts of his game for me. Jones I'm still unsure of.

But slating a very good player in Vertonghen whilst we have major issues at CB is a bit hypocritical. The only people who really rate Jonny Evans are some United fans. Ask any opposition supporter and they wouldn't want Evans anywhere near their first 11.

And LVG supposedly wants 2 new CBs - what does that tell you?

That going into a season with 3 'senior' CB's whilst playing a formation which requires 3 CB's at one time is not a good idea.

Evans wouldn't be anywhere near opposition PL teams first 11? Are you having a laugh?

It comes across as if you are agreeing with these opposition supporters.

Of course Evans would get into, let's say, Hull City's back four. But ask any non-Utd supporter of the teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and City if they'd want Evans in their starting 11.

Actually - any non-Utd Caf poster reading this - would you take Evans over your existing CBs in starting 11?

LVG supposedly rates Evans the highest out of all our CB options- what does that tell you?

The fact you put it across as he wouldn't 'get anywhere near' is wide of the mark. By a long way. We only conceded 33 goals in the league when he replaced Vidic after his Basel injury in the 10/11 season. Evans has shown to be of at least a similar level to Mertesacker, Cahill and Nastasic.

To be honest, I've only skimmed the thread. I didn't realise anyone had slated Vertonghen? He's definitely better than anything we have.

I'd take Smalling or Jones over Vertonghen any day. Evans is better too.

I think he's overrated simply because he's good on the ball. People seem to rate the 'ball playing defenders'. Good player, but nothing special.

He's a bit overrated.

Funnily enough, reminds me a bit of Vermaelen back then, good on the ball and capable of a nice goal now and then, but not a particularly great defender.

That our other options are dire?

Look, I love our attacking options, I think we've got the best in the league in Mata behind Rooney and RVP

Herrera plus 1 new addition will make our midfield

Our GK is

But our defence is depressing IMO. Which is why our manager is in for 2 brand new, sexy CBs.

Obviously he's better than all our center backs. Can't name one thing evans is better than him at let alone argue him being the better player. Jones is no terry ffs, he's shown nothing at center back. We see the potential, but at this point he's looked substandard when played there. Smalling has a lot of potential but his standards have dropped somewhat in recent times because of the lack of game time in his position. Vertogen is quality, there's no doubt about that. There's no way you can name 3 better CB's in the league than him.

Defending.

Defending.
How though? He doesn't read the game as well as him, he's not a better tackler than him, he doesn't handle the bigger, stronger center forwards better than him, he's no better in the air... I ask again, what is it that he does better than vertoghen?

Don't waste your breath. People are going to continue to think that just because Vertonghen is good on the ball and scores goals he's a poor defender, which isn't actually true at all. Nor is he an inferior defender in any way to Evans and as you've said, there's not one area of the game he bests him in.

Well, he makes a lot of errors when defending, and Evans doesn't. Hence why I think Evans is a better defender. I don't think Vertonghen is a poor defender, but he needs to cut-out all the mistakes before he's regarded as a great defender, for me.

Bizarre thread, I put the Vertbullshit down to Eriksen's blind Spurs love but plenty seem to want to follow him over the cliff.

Yes. It's criminal to rate a player highly who only the season before last was the best in the league. Bizarre.

Jan Vertonghen: I'm not signing a new contract - but I'm happy at Tottenham

Jan Vertonghen today revealed that he has decided not to sign a new contract with Spurs but insists he remains happy at the club.

The Belgian defender was widely reported to have agreed an extension to his current deal amid rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

Vertonghen’s agent, Mustapha Nakhli, was quoted earlier this month as saying “we have spoken to [chairman] Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good — we hope to sort everything out soon”.

But after a series of discussions, both the club and Vertonghen have agreed to put talks on hold for the time being, although the 27-year-old was keen to stress this was not a signal of any serious discontent at White Hart Lane under the club’s new manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Asked about his contract situation, Vertonghen replied: “I am not signing. No. We agreed not to. I would prefer not to say why. I still have four years left. I am happy at the club and I think they are happy with me. That’s where it ends. I am very happy, we have a good manager, we have a good team and a lot of good players. The squad is very big and you have to work hard to play every game, and I hope I am playing again soon.

“It is good [under Pochettino]. He is working well with a lot of videos and individually he talks a lot with the players. He is a manager who expects a lot from players. We work hard and that is good — it will pay off in the end.”

Vertonghen started last night’s 3-1 Capital One Cup third round victory over Nottingham Forest and has featured in five of Spurs’ nine games so far this season, although he was left on the bench for last weekend’s Premier League defeat against West Brom.

“I want to play in the biggest games,” he said. “That is what you are a footballer for. We have a lot of centre-backs now with [Federico] Fazio, with Eric Dier, who is doing very well. Obviously Vlad [Chiriches] and Younes [Kaboul] played at the weekend and we are fighting for two places with those guys. Everyone has to be just that little bit better so that the manager chooses them.”

Spurs were roused from their slumbers last night after falling behind to Forest midfielder Jorge Grant’s 61st minute strike.

Pochettino’s double substitution yielded significant results as both Ryan Mason and Harry Kane came off the bench to score either side of Roberto Soldado’s smartly converted effort. Mason’s goal — a superb 30-yard drive — capped an impressive cameo along with Kane, who proved more effective in 25 minutes than Paulinho was all night.

Pochettino changed his entire team from the one that lost to West Brom, and although there weren’t many who significantly enhanced their case for inclusion against Arsenal on Saturday, it should be pointed out this was a completely different game from the one they will face at Emirates Stadium.

Barca can't sign anyone can they?

I wonder if he's pushing for a transfer.

He's better than any of our defenders.

I was really surprised to see him benched the last few weeks and figured he must have been struggling with an injury or recovering from an injury. The news he won't sign a new deal makes sense and I would love him at United he's pure quality.

He's a baller but not a great defender. Thought he was poor last season but still better than what we have. Can play left back too.

Dead average - not good enough for a team aspiring to top 4.

I don't think he's all that either. Typical case where people love a defender who's good on the ball rather than rating their defensive capabilities.

Would certainly stroll straight into our first team.

Think he's a bit overrated too tbh but our options are limited, aren't they? There aren't that many quality CBs around.

Tottenham would absolutely murder us on any transfer fee though.

I like him, but he is just a better version of Rojo. We need a leader and defender at the back. Would take him if we sell the injury prone defenders first and buy some CBs that arent injured every 2 weeks.
