Jan Vertonghen

Has he lost his place as a regular starter? I'd doubt that. Pochettino has recently said "I am happy with Jan, for us he's an important player. We're in three competitions, we change the team a lot."

And when the FA Cup 3rd round arrives that'll be four competitions, assuming we're still in the League Cup by then. Besides, selling an experienced and accomplished CB mid-season would be a surprising move ... I don't think it'll happen.

Same could be said of taking that quote at face value, he isn't one of the first names on the team sheet in league games and thats what matters, Europa League and League Cup are second rate competitions so being a regular in those doesnt say much

He's left footed, isn't he? Which means he'd be taking Rojo's place in the team.

I'd have thought a RCB would be a bigger priority given that (current injury aside) Rojo has far more chance of staying fit than the likes of Evans, Smalling and Jones.

More importantly, I can't think of a single player that Spurs have sold mid-season who (a) wasn't approaching the end of their contract; and/or (b) wasn't a peripheral squad player. Vertonghen falls into neither category.

Of course, if a stupendous cash sum was offered then maybe, but otherwise I'd see the Vertonghen-to-United stories as little more than the usual media guff.

I think rumor originates from the idea that he's been attending dinners with Blind and the ex-Ajax people who are around United now.

This is one I wanted in the summer, a comfortable on the ball, goal scoring CB, would work well alongside Jones IMO if they could both stay fit for long enough.

Much as the links are tenuous I hope there's something in this one.

Would be an excellent signing if we can somehow persuade Levy to let him come to United. Rojo is being overrated by a lot of people. I don't think he is a long term solution. There are a few central defenders out there that would be useful to the team, but LvG might turn his nose up at those players. Hummels has become very, very injury prone and is going to be huge gamble which we cannot afford. Would rather sign Vertonghen and have him line up with Smalling.

Levy and Spurs can suck a goat.. Wouldnt want to get blackmailed by that crook ever again..

If Man Utd offered you £10m Levy would bite their hand off.

That's pretty much what Spurs paid for him isn't it? With inflation alone his fee will have gone up since then. They'll certainly turn a profit if he has 3 years left on his contract.

If our injury problems at the back are as bad in January as they are now then Levy will know he has us by the balls.

What is the fecking obsession with left-footed defenders? :wenger: Can we not concentrate on getting quality on the right side of our CBs too?

Hummels plays LCB despite being primarily a rightie. Vidic was the same thing. So please drop the right-footed vs. left-footed thing when looking for CBs. I would rather keep the money to activate Aymeric Laporte's release clause or sign Ezequiel Garay from the Russians rather than overpaying for someone who is well-documented wank in defending and yet would be brought in because he knows the Premier League.

If he's available I wouldn't mind him at all.
Vertonghen and Smalling would make a good partnership with Rojo and Jones as back up would be quite solid for years to come.
McNair should be be kept as cover if we get too many injuries and continue developing in the U21's. We should flog Evans off now, he's beyond a joke. I'm not sure on Blackett, Thorpe and M.Keane, they should move on for the sake of their career's.

 I love the Cafs view on some players, its evenly split to ''great/good defender'' and ''overrated/wank''.

I'm not convinced tbh. He hasn't even been a regular centre back for Spurs has he? He's been played at left back the majority of the time has he not?

Buying a defender who doesn't play ahead of the likes of Kaboul, Dawson, Fazio etc etc doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

Carragher put it best - he's overrated

Do not want

I think he's a pretty good CB and a good leftback, but with some lapses of concentration in his game. And we already have Jones and Rojo who need to cut the mistakes out so Vertonghen surely cant be our best bet. Given what we have, lets look elsewhere

If we didn't have Rojo and the 22 million Euro fee is true then it would be a brilliant addition. Never going to be top 5 in the world defensively, he's not too bad at it though, was a solid duo with Alderweireld for Ajax in the Champions League on numerous ocassions, had good spells for Belgium and Spurs playing centrally and as a left back.

On the ball in a Louis van Gaal team would be quite nice I imagine, on form he should be top 5 in the world in terms of pure footballing skills as a CB. Has the right age, experience and background too.

But I don't know if that is what we are looking for, and how signing him would work out with the defenders we already have. His passing from the defense would make our current midfield and general play look so much better though.

Why is every poxy Belgian overrated (even good players like Hazard and Kompany)?

He'll be alright, will get plenty of game time, our defenders are made up of paper mashe :D

I agree with Sherwood.

He just doesn't look convincing for me and that Remy goal summed him up.
