I think people were just hoping for a bit more pace and excitement in the team rather than further tidy numbers 10s. Kagawa, Mata, Mhikitarian have all disappointed there is recent years. It also more or less means Pogba is a deep midfielder for us for the future, which will make it tough for him to ever live up to his potential as a 90m pound player, and herrera is likely out of the team as we get someone more suited to fulfilling the defensive midfield role.

So possibly a bit more complex than 'ZOMG ASHELY YOUNG PLAYS LOLS'

He has a 1 in 3 goalscoring record for his professional career. That is an impressive return, especially when you then consider he has assisted loads too.

Exactly. We can question his mentality* and all that but his quality and goal scoring record is very obvious.

*based on assumptions and comparisons with Di Maria which I disagree with.

This sums it up nicely, don't know what's happened to this place, never seen so much negativity around a transfer. Normally this place goes nuts when we sign a 14 year old from Ghana.

Shadows of Di Maria signings are masking people eyes sadly. They don't understand they are 2 different situations.

A few people earlier in the thread said he's like Sanchez? Is this true? I haven't really watched much of him a couple of World Cup games. But if he's anything like Sanchez I'm all for it. If not why not let MKH play the 10 role.

Lol. James at 30m to 40m would be a steal not at 75m. We can buy a cheaper player for 30m and spend that remaining 40m on a good CB or a good DM. Steal of the century? Are you serious? Yes we could get Mbappe but he has had just one good season in a weaker and less competitive league than the PL. Jose will never spend that much on an unproven teenage muppet fantasy.
and you think he would spend it on Belotti?

If he's here to replace Mata's role this season as a squad player then I'm ok with it. But if you think he will be the guy to take us to another level or one of those players who can decide the league then we're fecked.

and how many has he taken? What do you thing the scoring rate for freekick is?

Which is literally why my point was that he doesn't really get to take any corners/free kicks this season because other players have the monopoly over them... and any that he has taken haven't been anything amazing.

From Madrid fans:

I hope he goes to Italy and not England. And definitely not United.

Wonderful player. Whoever gets him is getting a fantastic player and a great guy.

Just hope he does not end up at Bayern.

It will be disappointing to lose players who have helped us to an historic year (even if we end the season trophyless, we have already had an incredible run), and keep players that haven't done a whole lot.

Yes we need changes and we need things freshening up, and it is so obvious to everyone who should leave. Everyone except those that make these decisions it seems.

I hope he stays until the moment I see an official announcement of his departure. Such a special talent.

Based on his reaction, it is clear he is leaving. Honestly, it was painfull to watch it because he bleeds white, and despite he is being forced out of the club.

I think this is a mistake from clubs part, especially if the plan is to keep BBC. Facepalm.

Really good player, I remember us saying last season will be the season where he gets 20 goals and 20 assist. Just no space for him in our starting 11. Probably taking Benzema's position, but his lack of speed is quite significant.

Lack of professionalism at times as well, just completely didn't show up today

Had a bad game. It happens. He's been very consistent this year

Really sad moment when he left. It was his dream to play for this club, so it's tough on him for sure. But it's also tough that a player of his quality doesn't get the playing time.

I don't consider him as a bust. I would have kept him..... i said the same thing about Ozil who was starring for us until Isco was signed.

if we keep the BBC and sell James is pure stupidity.

Hope he stays. He had a rough season but I'm sure he'll do good given the proper chance. Sell Bale / Benz.

one of my favorite players, that was definitely a good bye, i feel bad for losing him, but its the right move for him, thanks for everything James!

and i hope he doesnt go to Bayern/Ancelloti, would rather Man Utd

I dont see the big deal about james hes always been hit and miss here like yesterday he was god awfull and isco is way more important to keep. good player but sell him and bring in more needed players to the squad .

Well I mean he hasn't been given consistent minutes to achieve any sort of sustainable form. So I get the dips in form. When he was an undisputed starter here and before that as well, he was one of the best #10s in the world, and he is still that.

I just wish we would sell Bale or Benzema maybe both but especially Benzema. Its not easy to find world class talent and letting such players go not because the player was unprofessional or that he isn't good enough but because we couldn't make it work feels a little silly to me. I know its not so simple but I would certainly look at moving players like Benzema before I think about James and Morata.

If James actually wants to play for us and he isn't the only attacking midfielder we sign in the summer then I would be happy with the transfer. It wouldn't sort out our problems on the wings but he is easily good enough to be a starter for us. He's only 25 and I believe he is nowhere near his full potential yet. If he can rediscover his World Cup form and kick on then we could have a seriously good player on our hands.

I actually think if we sign him, he could set Old Trafford alight. I imagine he'll want to prove he is a top player, and Mourinho wouldn't sign a player who isn't interested in playing for us.

Now I know what Natalie Imbruglia was going through, because now I'm torn. I thought another nr.10 wouldn't really be on the agenda for the summer but looking at his stats, age and delivery from set pieces he could be a very good signing.
I just feel there are so many areas that need improving, left back, midfield, wings, striker and possibly a centerback that this could take a heavy chunk from the transfer budget.

Personally hate this move. Was hoping we would move towards more pace as we seem to insist on counter attacking. Seems more like this is the best deal we could get for De he's rather than mourinho really wanting him over other players. Will likely be on 250k too.

On the other hand, since we can't really sign griezmann now it might mean serious cash to out to work on the defence and defensive midfield. Probably spells the end for Herrera as a starter but guess we have to trust mou on this stuff.

Games where we had space to counterattack weren't our problem this season though, unless we played without Pogba so we couldn't even transition properly since we lack midfield options without him. The games where teams parked the bus were the problem and James could do well in those, he's crafty player. I would like Bernardo Silva more and Griezmann...but if James is 50mil euros...adding another capable option to create and score is good since a lot of our attacking players didn't offer much.

Nothing like Sanchez at all. Sanchez is all about pace and explosiveness, James is more of a slow, scoring playmaker. Best comparison I can make is James is a similar player to Mata, only better.

Can't believe the negativity here about this potential signing...
He's a 25 year old attacking midfielder with a goalscoring record that is better than one every three games (Mata is about one in four).
If it works out we could have him for best years of his career.
Agree this isn't a risk-free transfer but should be an upgrade on Lingard/Mata/Rooney.
This.

Based on the comments in here, one might think this was the James Milner thread.

I must say that i'm excited about the prospect of signing this lad. He's clearly an upgrade on most, if not all, our attacking players.
Signing him does not mean we wont be further strenghtening our front line.

All this talk about pace and power. How many players actually have those attributes along with James's technique, passing and shooting? Are Eriksen, Özil and De Bruyne most famous for leaving defenders in smoke?

Although having players with pace and power around James would be a fine idea.

No-one is saying he isn't an upgrade though. We could get better for cheaper is the issue, which is why it's underwhelming. James is a very good player, but a) do we need another 10 and b) if we do, why don't we get a better, cheaper alternative?

That being said, I'm not Jose and he's usually bang on with transfers, so if he think's he's a good fit, who am I to question the transfer. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

James isn't slow, people should stop using those terms lightly, they already did it with Mkhi.

Clearly a great player that would improve our squad. However my issue is, if we do sign him, he is yet another number 10. Micky has performed well when given the central role and have proved over the recent months he isn't a winger.

You just know Real won't sell cheap and would like cost £60m-£70m when in reality £30-£50m should be realistic. I feel in buying him we won't have the funds for more pressing signings. Plus Mendes is involved so he will want so some huge cut of the transfer which only pushes the price up further.

If we are spending that kind of money I would rather offer £50m for Sanchez. He has one year left on his contract and has already given some indication he wants out. Yes it may be a lot of money for a 28 year old but he is proven in the league, likes to play LW (which we desperately need), and will fit straight into our system.

I fear this club is being run by the mafia of super agents these day who can make easy money off these major transfers. So far the vast majority have been awful signings in one way or the other since Sir Alex retired.

Still can't get excited about this at the money they are talking about. Would prefer Sanchez tbh.

Sanchez and James have nothing to do in the same sentence, it's like saying that you would take Marcelo over Bonucci.

He did at Dortmund, and was another example of a player we didn't really need taking priority over areas we did.

He did not play as a 10 for dortmund. He was operating on the left but had freedom to cut infield because of the width provided by full backs under Tuschel.

Since we bought Mkhitaryan we have predominantly made him operate on the right flank, so why you're calling him a number 10 for us is still bizzare?

I never said he played number 10 for us?

The thing is we want to see better signings than James. Someone like Bernardo Silva who plays a relatively similar role to James is a younger and technically superior player than James. He is someone who most of us would want to sign over James, especially if Silva is available (by available I don't mean Monaco are actively looking to sell him but that with the right offer they could be persuaded to sell him). If Silva makes a move somewhere else this summer and we sign James instead (assuming we won't sign both as they both are quite similar players in terms of style), then the fans are right to demand better.

Lingard has all the pace in the world and he's awful.

Pace isn't everything.

Fair point. I do think though that if we had a better counter attack we wouldn't have looked so second rate vs arsenal and spurs lately. I guess those games are fresh on my mind.

Is there a chance Jose may deploy him as the furthest midfielder in the mould of Lampard at Chelsea? Arriving late in the box/on the edge he can score a ton of goals if we sort our wing play out too

I'm sure he has some sort of plan for him. Given the players that will most likely be available this summer, James does seem a little underwhelming, especially for that price, but the one redeeming factor is Jose's usually the master of second season transfers, so I'm hopeful.
