James Milner

This doesn't answer my question ... but hey ho.

There is no good answer to your question.

Sir Alex and David Gill both say we have the Ronaldo money to spend. You might also assume that we'd have a bit of money from decent cup runs and the usual. We also have a fairly large squad, so most likely if we do sign a player to go straight into the first team, we'll also be selling a player who gets game time.

Both Alex and Gill have talked about value for money. So lets be sensible and say that even if its true we have all the remaining Ronaldo money, the money we offered to sign Benzema and the money we offered to keep Tevez (same money?) - even if we had loads of cash to spend in theory, we wont be spending it all unless suddenly there's lots of "value" in the transfer market. We're really not going to get lots of value for the big name players.

So we may have lots of money to spend, we may have nothing other than what we're already spending in the summer. And even if we have bucketloads, we're only going to spend a certain measure of it, so that there's "value for money" in the manager's eyes.

There's a lot of talk on here about Man. Utd trying to sign Milner or Modric or several other similarly expensive players this summer.

However, you've already paid a tidy sum for Smalling, plus who knows how much for the Mexican striker, so I'm wondering what you lot reckon will be your remaining transfer budget this summer given your continuing large debt?
Nothing less than 30 million. I infact expect much more. How we will choose to spend it is another matter entirely.

Sir Alex Ferguson looks to James Milner as answer to United's problems | Football - Times Online

Sir Alex Ferguson is weighing up a summer move for James Milner, the Aston Villa midfield player. Villa want to tie Milner, 24, to a new long-term contract but Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, is monitoring the situation and may look to take advantage.

Martin O’Neill considers Milner integral to his hopes of taking the club into the Champions League and would not want to sell. The player has two years left on his present deal but Villa want to extend the contract and are prepared to increase his wages from about £45,000 a week to £65,000, giving him parity with Ashley Young, his team-mate.

Ferguson is considering his midfield options amid concerns about the long-term fitness of Owen Hargreaves and the form of Michael Carrick and Anderson, while Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are coming to the end of their United careers. Milner’s versatility appeals to the Scot and he fits into the the policy of signing young players with scope for improvement.

Although he was originally perceived as a wide player, Milner has impressed in central midfield for Villa and can also play in either full-back position. His form is expected to earn him a place in Fabio Capello’s England squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa this summer.

His versatility clinches it for me. He's a very good player, much better than some give him credit. And he's got so much room for improvement, he just needs to surround himself with better players to develop further.

all season i have had a suspision we would be in for either milner, young or aghalbhor..

guess we don't need young as nani and valencia are doing well on the wings with obertan as a developing up and comer..

abhablhor is decent player but apoor mans rooney maybe harsh but yea not needed..

leaves milner could solves some issues in the middle of the field where we are crying out for a attacking creative goal scoring midfielder..

always a premium when you buy a decent english player ala rooney so if SAF thinks he is the answer im all good with that..

He'd be a solid addition in the Prem but he wont change anything as far as a CL challenge goes.

I think he can stregthen us in all competitions.

Him and Benzema (still!) and one other midfielder would be good.

Please Mr. Knights!

Park does well in CL, so does Gazza. O Shea has had in his pocket the mighty Figo in the past. Gibson just scored a goal in the quarter finals after very few CL appearances. I think Milner could do us a great service in the CL

My point was that he doesn't add anything that we don't already have that would help a renewed push for the CL. I think we should be looking for a midfielder who can dictate play, open up defenses and who is excellent at ball retention, to me Milner is the player Gibson can be in a couple of years.

Good point at the end. Those qualities you're describing fit a certain Ginger prince we have on the way out. Not easy to replace directly

I seem to remember someone said that about Carrick and Fletcher at various points.

You may be right, but you never know how a player will develop when they change clubs.

That's true but we already have Gibson and Anderson in development, I'd just rather we got someone more proven if we are to spend than add another developer.

As I have said in the other threads too we should have snapped up this fecker when we bought Smith.. Big mistake we made not signing him as well as Smudge.. He was signed by Newcastle for around 4 Million and was sold at Villa for around 12..

Milner has been on my 3 signing shortlist for this summer, along with a creative midfielder (like Gourcuff) and a more defensive minded midfielder, not sure who that should be though.

For me, Milner would be a great addition to the squad, providing competition though the centre and on the wings. He can also fill in at full back. He is an intelligent player on the ball, decent passer and a decent goal scoring threat too.

I would like him at United, but I would hope that he is not the key signing this summer, as I don't think he is quite good enough to be what we need for next season. He would be a step up in quality, attacking wise, from Park imo.

Milner is a good player. Good delivery and with two good feet but i still am not sure about his ability at the very top and if he can do it with United.

As for Carrick, people say he wont be sold, people say he will or should be sold.

I doubt he'll be sold because not many people would want him and not many people would be willing to pay good money for him.

Please be true! Love this guy as a player. Pure energy and a great presence in midfield. Could really improve us next season.

I guess City are teh new Chelsea and will buy up every single player that we are linked with even if they already have world class options in that position!

Milner might not improve their first team all that much, but he'd be great for them in the sense of improving their squad. He'd be a very effective centre-mid, along with his ability to play on the wing and at full back, when needed.

He's exactly the sort of signing City will need to compete in the PL, IMO. He might not beat teams with brilliance too often, but he's a good player with a great attitude for the game.

That's not what City need, they should use CL football (if they get it) to buy real quality.

Yeah but if they want to be taken seriously they need players who can really cut it in the champions league and let's face it Milner isn't one of those players. I hope they overspend on him, they don't need squad players (similar to us), they need a special player. Still defies belief how much O'Neil spent to buy him as an unproven player.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has admitted his irritation at rumours which have surfaced regarding Manchester City's purported interest in James Milner.

The in-form England winger, primarily employed in a more central position for Villa, is currently enjoying his most consistent season to date and a number of eye-catching displays have led to talk of a £24million summer switch to Eastlands.

City's neighbours Manchester United have also been mooted as strong suitors but O'Neill is adamant his player is going nowhere.

On the contrary, the Ulsterman insists he plans to open contract talks with him at the end of the season.

Commenting on the Milner rumours, O'Neill said: "It is irksome at this stage of the season.

"It doesn't do anyone any favours particularly because the player has had a fantastic time and is enjoying his football immensely here.

"He has had a really brilliant time, particularly since moving into the middle of midfield and I am delighted for him.

"James is still under contract with us and it's a case of dampening fires that weren't there in the first place.

"We want the best players to stay here at Aston Villa so we can keep the momentum going.

"But I have kind of accepted it now.

"If it is not James it will be Ashley Young and if it is not Ashley it might be Richard Dunne and then someone else the following week."

No contact
O'Neill also denied he knew of any contact from City about the prospect of Milner moving to Manchester in the summer.

"It has got ridiculous now and I can categorically say that I have not heard anything from Manchester City," he said.

"I spoke to my chief executive late yesterday evening and he never mentioned it so I assume they have not been in touch with him either.

"You almost get the impression that stories are put in there to kind of upset you at this stage of the season.

"It was interesting to hear Arsene Wenger talking about Barcelona and having to rebuff stories about someone who was under contract at Arsenal.

"They are having to get Barcelona to make statements about them not coming after a player."

From SSN.

Also, I know someone called James Milner, who runs a bar. He's a bit of twat.

Let City have him. A player like Milner should be on the bench at Man United.

Yep.

We have plenty of triers in our team. We need someone with a bit of vision and class in the middle of the park - who is also tough as nails and can put a shift in.

I agree. I don't think he should be in their first team IF they live up to the aspirations they seem to be trying to set for themselves. But that's not an overnight process. They have to give themselves a solid, proven platform to do that from.

In a purely pragmatic sense, bringing in someone as good as Milner will bring the squad along until you can drop in the Kakas/Ronaldos/Messis etc.

Players like Milner are not spectacular but very important during the long season. He has a good attitude towards the game, very versatile and is likely to be around until he retires at a club like United. Like Brophs says he'd fit around and do the grafting for the stars of the team.

i still think he s under-rated by most posters over here

Maybe for city, but i think we have players like that all ready. I think we need a cut above to improve our squad.

Alot of underrating of his ability on here. This lad possess very good technical ability/vision and the tactical discipline/physicality to go with it.. not to mention his superb long range shooting.

He is surrounded by average players.. but put him in a good team and he will be excellent.

He can hit 50/60 yard passes with either foot, he can hit volleys from distance with either foot.. he's quality from set pieces and can cross well from wide positions.

He can split defences with his passing and also is very nimble on the ball, he wouldn't get caught in possession like a Carrick.

Well underrating, overrating, its just a difference of opinion. Some of us think he would improve our squad some of us dont, we'll never know unless it happens. Personally i dont think he would significantly improve our squad but its not up to me!
