James McCarthy

I think he'd get more games with us than any other Ch.L club. He'd get minutes at Chelsea & Milners pitch time if he's lucky at city. Wouldn't it be great to have a marauding Irishman back in the midfield ;)

He's Scottish.

Read me.

Yep, lots of cover for the key central position, freeing up Herrera to play further forward, where he can add goals.
Herrera can still play further forward, even if we sign a slightly more advanced midfielder than Schneiderlin and McCarthy.
Wouldn't be the end of the world signing both, but there's still gap for someone more forward-thinking.

sooooo Cleverley, who couldn't get into our team, goes to Everton, and people are seriously suggesting the chap who Cleverley might keep out of Everton's side.

Carrick
Blind
Schneiderlin
McCarthy
Young
Di Maria
Young
Fellaini
Mata
Herrera
Depay

I think that would do quite nicely. Lots of competition, a few players who are versatile positionally & cover.

I bet you a million euro Cleverley won't keep McCarthy out of the Everton team, should he stay.

Lacks a box-to-box, but we're going in circles.

 There's not a hope in hell Cleverley would keep McCarthy out of that Everton side, McCarthy is twenty times the player poor tom is.

Point is Cleverley is earning more than McCarthy, which means either Everton up his pay or one of the top clubs come in for him. Simples.

There was no question of Cleverly leaving, his time was up. Now, we need bodies in the squad & I don't see the muppet favourites pleading to come to OT, so yeah, maybe we don't shop at Harrrods this summer but we can still be cute about who we bring in.

He's not bad but I'd rather have Schneiderlin.

Wow that is so underwhelming it makes my eyes hurt, looks like a pub team compared to Bayern and Real Madrid, and I'm not going to even bother comparing it to Barcelona.

Schweinstieger
Javi Martinez
Xabi Alonso

Thiago
Gotze

Robben

That 11 seriously lacks balance!

only joking

There're either unavailable or getting on a bit. Think we've got to face facts that until we're dominant in the Prem again, we're not going to be attracting the world's elite - even then it won't be easy for us as it wasn't for Sir Alex. How often did he plump for the proven Prem option.

I agree on the 'why not both' angle with him and Schneiderlin

Hererra had a few games out injured this season as well,we could prob pick up both for circa 50m. Both prem proven and would enhance us. Flexibility would be there if Hererra needed a rest etc

Also unsure about our relationship with Everton being that bad? They pulled our pants down with Fellaini but we allowed that to happen. Barring that I'd always thought it was OK and wed definitely have some players they'd be interested in Perm or Loan

McCarthy is a good player, but if there is a chance to sign Schneiderlin, then i would prefer that we sign him. Schneiderlin is a far better player than McCarthy.

He definitely be a decent option for us, but I don't think he's the level we should be aiming for a starter. Could be a very good squad player though at a reasonable price.

I didnt watch a lot of Everton this season, but he was incredible against us in the last game. He really ran the show. If that is how he plays most games, bring him in.

I was a big fan a few years ago. I started the first thread on him here. But I think he's been disappointing the last couple of seasons. He'd be alright, but would be paying crazy money to fund fecking Everton again.

It really isn't how he has played most games. Everton were playing their cup final that game.

I guess he raises his game against the top sides then. There are better options out there, and like you said Everton would want a high price.

I'd expect the Van Gaal regime to get a few pounds off him & playing at OT would be like a Cup final every time ;)

Rubbish

What would "a high price" be, for MaCarthy? At 24 £30million would be reasonable & around what we'd expect to pay.

£30 million? I was thinking more £8 million + Januzaj for a season.
We know there's a Premium for inter-Prem side transfers. What straight cash value would Januzaj have, if put up this summer - I doubt there'd be any interest from Prem Clubs.

It would be a crazy time to sell Januzaj now he was shocking last season, but you're probably right re the prem for buying him anyway, but I do think Everton would be good for him on loan basis and a fee of about £4-£5 million for this would be reasonable, so that takes the fee for McCarthy up to £12-£13 million which is surely about right.

They had their fill from us with Fellaini, lets not do it again.

We'd certainly have to fork out 30 million or so. Sometimes you have to separate the face from the hole that needs filling (ooh er). We desperately need someone who does what he does. I'd love to think he's the best man for the job. His progression from much hyped prodigy at Hamilton to eager apprentice at Wigan to proper premiership force has been flawless so far. You sense he wants the next step. I've been underwhelmed with his stint in a green jersey so far but there's clearly more to come. I'd be excited to see us give him the chance. Even at that price.

When we see what a prospect the £30million for Depay is, similar money for McCarthy appears nuts but we are Man United & we do get taken, when buying or selling - £16M for Welbeck was robbery IMO. However, I/we, know how it works, we pay over the odds because we end up shopping at home so often. IF, McCarthy hands in a transfer request, Everton will probably sell cheaper, I hope.

Maybe you're right but I'd anything over £15 million would be mad for him, but we'll see, we have the dosh and if we want we'll get him for what ever it takes.

RE Welbeck I think we did ok, he is not a goal scorer and never will be, the same old rhetoric will be spouted by him in a few week, 'I can score loads of goals if I'm given the chance through the middle, this is season I prove myself as a striker' etc, he won't, and it won't be.

No. He's not good enough for the level we aspire to reach. He'd prob be fine as a squad player, but why on earth would we pay £30m for him?

We should be aiming much much higher.

A good player, but not sure if he is what we need.

I've been pretty critical of him when it comes to representing Ireland, but his ability is clear at club level.
