Great performance the other day from Garner. I hope he grows in confidence and ability just like McTominay did these last few months. He's what people want McTominay to be. More skillful and better defensive ability. Doesn't mean he'll be as good for the seniors. Just saying when it comes to talent, he's superior.

He’s a totally different bracket to McTominay in terms of the calibre of youth talent. He’s been well ahead of his age group for years, he’s captained England at his age group, and has been with the United first team at 17. Scott was not noteworthy at all in the academy and nobody would have batted an eyelid if he was released. Scott has grown and grown though with the games and training afforded to him, so hopefully Garner can do something similar because he’s a proper top talent.

Sink or swim is the best way imo.

No. They definitely need to be managed right. He’s super talented but physically maybe not ready. I’m hoping he’ll get games in Europa.

Yes and no. If his body isn't ready and he gets seriously hurt, it could derail his entire career (just look at what happened to Walcott, Ramsey, and Ox - they've put so many miles on their bodies at such a young age and injuries suffered early on have haunted them through their careers). It's got nothing to do with whether he's ready from a skills and IQ perspective. If the staff feel he's ready physically then I agree, he should be given a chance to show what he's got. But I am 100% behind protecting our talented prospects from the possibility of destroying their bodies because they were thrown in before they had physically matured enough.

There are so many examples of players doing it from a young age, I would say that the best ones usually are developed in that way. Even Ramsey despite the injury developed into a very good player, and that injury could happen to a seasoned pro. I think he can do it, and I'd rather we give minutes to him instead of Matic.

There are also so many examples of it going wrong.

It's not about whether the injury could happen to a seasoned pro - obviously any time a player steps on the pitch he could get injured. The point was that young players, whose bodies are not far along in their development, are much more likely to derail their careers and put a lower cap on their ceiling if they pick up injuries (usually they're niggling as opposed to severe) because their bodies aren't yet built to withstand the grind of a first team football season. Speaking from experience, if you pick up an ankle injury as a young player, that ankle becomes a problem area for the rest of your career. And the more you pick up niggling injuries in that area, the more you compensate with other muscles, which leaves you at risk of other, more serious injury in other muscle groups.

As I said, if the staff believe Garner is physically ready then he ought to be given a chance. But not every player develops physically at the same rate - it took me until I was 20 to really start putting on bulk, despite being on a lifting schedule for my university's team from the time I was 18. Saying "sink or swim" is so black and white and does not leave any room for variability based on the facts and circumstances of each case.

No way is a 17 year old kid getting sent on loan! Ridiculous runour

People aren't patient enough these days to give a youngster a chance.

You're either good enough straight away or they think you're rubbish and shouldn't be in the team. Look at Mctominay, many wrote him off straight away (myself included) but he looks a different player these days.

Garner isn't ready for first team football yet. Better to let him play the cup matches against Rotherham and some Europa league performances.

Next year he'll be 19 and more first team ready.

In terms of how to integrate him, I believe sink or swim is completely the wrong way to do it. A player goes in too early they will be terrified to play their game and make mistakes. Ideally he would come on a few times in matches which are won, get half an hour here, twenty minutes there, and feel comfortable with bringing his whole game to the new and higher level in those periods.

The likes of Fabregas, Rooney, Torres and Owen were basically done by the time they hit 30 or even before. Nothing wrong with playing them young but they can't be playing every game, they need to be brought along carefully. In saying that, Sterling doesn't seem to have taken much harm so far, be interesting to see what he's like in a few years.

Possebon may be another good example. Supposedly wasn't the same after the horror tackle. Not sure if that was something physical, mental or both.

The kid could get a serious injury playing against Stoke's reserves facing Charlie Adam and his career being over in that way. There are so many examples of kids not getting a chance, I'm sure they would appreciate being given a chance that way rather that not getting it like most of the prospects at big clubs. I get your point though, and I hope Ole and his staff manage his progress properly, he's a very talented kid.

What a goal.

What a game, again.

idk I've been told that Longstaff's experience is just too great for Garner to overcome this season.

Could we not just have had both?? Our first team midfield options are terrible. I'd love to have both Garner and Longstaff coming through. We've no lack of space for quality midfielders here.

I hope he could play 5-10 first team games this season.

And give them both games? No chance that would have happened. Garner has more of a chance of a breakthrough now.

If he was at Newcastle he'd already be playing

Herrera hasn't been replaced. Fred, Matic and Pereira all need to be phased out.

Garner naturally replaces Matic next season but we need a lot more.

Pereira hasn't even been phased in fully yet and he needs to be phased out?

Don't think Garner will play that much this season tbh with the way ole spoke about him.

Thats your opinion. Ole's looks much different, he gave Andreas a new contract

Gomes can also play CM

Jesus lads come back to planet earth. Garner is class but anyone can see we still need a midfielder

Another belter.

Will definitely feature in the first team at some point this season.

Faith in the untested youth is all that people have got to hang their hat on now, so until the reality of seeing them actually playing in the first team hits home, then we might as well believe they all top class.

Two lads here seem genuinely relieved that we didn't strengthen the midfield. You'd swear it was City's midfield he was hoping to break into. If Garner was 25 established and world class we'd still need another quality midfielder in the squad.

Yep, the reality of how we have left out midfield will bite soon enough, I'm still in shock.

Another year or so off. He’ll replace Matic.
