Great shout, yeah. That’s exactly the type of team that you wouldn’t mind loaning your young players to, especially in the Championship where you’d expect them to be favourites in most games.

Hilariously, when I read this snippet earlier I immediately thought of this thread and, in particular, your suggestion of Bournemouth for a potential loan deal. Looks like you nailed it - Go on, admit it.. You’re ITK, aren’t you?

In all seriousness, that could be the move. I’d hold fire until they get a new manager in place and see what their philosophy entails; however, this is still a nice link. If reports are to be believed, Jason Tindall could take the role at Bournemouth and you would imagine he would be familiar with Garner. I’m all for it. You’d back Jimmy to get game time when you look at their current options consisting of the likes of Gosling and Lerma.

I wish I was, I wouldn't be constantly following the Sancho thread day after day.

Yeah I can't see them going totally against their free flowing style, pass and move game as the fans would hate watching them play tumescent football so I think this could be the perfect loan for him.

Bournemouth? Howe seems to have issues integrating any players who he didn’t get promoted to the Premier League with? How many new players have done well for him? You can count them on one hand (and maybe have a finger or two left over).
Firing solves all problems — no man, no problem.

As I dont watch youth football, just where is Garner at with his development? I know he is just 19 and hear a lot of talk of a years loan being a good move for him.......but is it?

There are several excellent potential dm signings for reasonable prices this summer.....but I have a strong feeling we are not going to make a signing there sadly.

Considering Perreira didnt work at dm, Fred and McTominay are both box to box midfielders......we basically have no proper dm cover for Matic next season.

So I ask is a year playing (and no guarantees regularly) in the championship a better education for Garner than continuing to train with the first team squad, being on the bench more regularly and getting 5-10 substitute appearances next season at the right times and 4/5 times in the starting line up for some cup games? If Matic is injured or goes back to the poor version of Matic we saw for quite a while not so many months ago, he may even have a chance to breakthrough during the season?

Despite Fred and Mctominay not being pure DMs they would both still be far ahead of Garner for playing time. Any time Matic is rested it'll be one of those 2 stepping in as they'll need the minutes.

That is what I thought the case may be, have barely seen him. But if that is the case and with so much quality out there and for me having no faith in the other options purely as dm, we should invest there then

Personally, I feel that we've got to give them both a shot this coming season. Before Bruno came in and when Pogba was injured they were 2 of our best performers, we've got to give them a chance to replicate that outside of the game every 2 days that was the restart.

If one of them doesn't step up sufficiently I'd sell them next year and then either look for a replacement or allow Garner to step up into their spot.

He needs a loan. With Matic, Fred and McTominay around there are not enough minutes for him in cup games, and theres no way we could risk playing him in the league in such an important position.

I dont see it like that. I think both are very good and valuable squad players but for Pogbas role as back up rather than tyi ngto shoehorn them into a position that doesnt suit either of them and sellin gthem if that doesnt work out.

But although they are useful squad players and different players.....do we need both as back up for one position? Personally with Freds fee and though it shouldnt be a reason, the fact McTominay came through the academy and is homegrown....I feel Fred will be sold, not this summer though

Everytime Fred has come on its been in place of Pogba and everytime McTominay has come on its been in place of Matic. I agree neither of them fit the Matic role, but I also can't see the club selling either of them this summer.

If both are competing for back up to Pogba neither of them will play enough, one of them is going to have to fill in for Matic when he needs a rest and whichever has the poorer season (if they can't fill Matic position) will likely be surplus to requirements and want more game time anyways.

Yes, when we had the injuries they were playing a a two. Now we have a settled midfield have you considered McTominay has come on for Matic as there are no other options? Also seems to hav ehappened when th egame is sfe so not sure he is trusted there. Also though very little game time, no surprise he has done very little or looked very good since the lockdown playing there as well.

I agree with what youre saying, we probably wont sign a defensive midfielder this season, we wont sell either of the two players and one or both of them may compete for the Maric role as a back up. I do however think all of that is a mistake for us and compounded by the fact there are so many huge young talents we could pursue for the role

He's our best player who's yet to breakthrough into the first team, imo.

Only Tuanzebe and Greenwood were ahead of him last year. This coming season will be his, hopefully.

Wasn't there talk of a Championship loan a while ago? I would rather he goes out on loan than sit on the bench or playing in the u23s for another year. It is pointless if he is too good for that level. I would rather him as a DM than Fred/McTominay, but Ole doesn't trust him yet.

Think he is almost certain to go on loan, it's which club would need his skills, and give him the opportunities. I think a number of the under 23 team will go on loan next season.

Maybe @limerickcitykid can answer. I think he was one of the best players in the u23 this year along with Chongy/Gomes.

The appearances he did make for the U23s this season he did look a level above, he was playing a bit more of a box to box role than a pure DM role though. I'd say at this point he's clearly too good for PL2 level but not being at PL level would suggest to me he's ready for a loan.

CM isn't a role that relies purely on talent, you need experience to supplement that too, obviously it's the same with a lot of roles but CMs the one you can't really "wing it" on pure ability. I'd say he'd undoubtably benefit from a loan, same as Chong, they've outgrown U23 football and if they aren't going to get substantial gametime here but they are going to at another club then I think it makes sense. McTominay for the time being looks like he's going to be pretty much be Matic's back up so it's hard to see where his minutes come from.

Yea sure.

Was definitely great at the u23s level. Played a more b2b role this season with loads of freedom to get up the pitch and took to it really well. The u23s with the main trio of Jimmy, Levitt, and Galbraith played a real free flowing interchanging midfield 3 in a way I don't think I've ever seen before, was a real joy to watch. Getting forward more and with conviction was something he and Neil Wood talked about needing to work on prior to the season and it obviously worked.

Looking forward, a loan is the best option imo and Neil Wood has spoken about it being likely. We looked at loaning him out previously but ultimately pulled the plug on it. He's got talent and is now at the stage where he needs to be putting it to the test and the occasional cup game against weaker opposition just doesn't cut it. He's looked quite timid and reserved in his first team appearances. I also felt he struggled to begin with and took time to work his way into the pace and physicality of the Lincoln EFL trophy match too.

The only way to get to grips with the pace and physicality of senior football is to be playing every week and he just isn't going to get that here. If he stays I don't see him getting much more time as Fred and McTominay will obviously be favoured even though they aren't real DMs. A year in the Championship will do him good and I think he'll do well at that level. I had the fortune of getting to watch another young midfielder in Conor Gallagher this season make his first foray into senior football on loan in the Championship and the strides he took week after week. Like Garner he initially was quieter and could drift in and out but within a few matches he was fully up to speed and was running the show. All it can take sometimes is just getting that run of games. I think Garner can do the same, he'll come back a much more imposing and demanding midfielder than we've seen from him in the first team so far.

Interesting insight, thanks for writing

Thanks. Have to say that is an area concerns me next season. I am still not convinced in Matic next season after the huge slump he had for quite a period of time. He is another year older, there will be less of a break and more games next season so even not slumping in form he will need resting at times and I liek mcTominay in the squad but not for the DM position in our set up.

Though I agree with you regarding experience in DM as a lot of the top players seem to peak in this position older than most outfield ones, a lot of the good options this summer to purchaseare young and possibly ready, of course we dont know until they play

Garner attracting interest from Swansea for a season long loan. Good move ?

Anything would be better than the amount of first team football he’s currently getting. He’s been training with the first team, some of the squad have said he’s the best young midfielder at the club but he’s not getting in the team due to playing attacking midfield. hopefully he goes on loan to a team pushing for promotion so he can utilise his attacking abilities.
