The news about the extension to 2023 has shafted any theories about getting him on the cheap next year, but it's not like it's a surprise to the club as they will have known about the contract situation for a long long time.

Dortmund can sell thier assets for whatever they think they are worth, that is thier right.
I seriously doubt we will see a recovered market next year though. Club finances are in ruin accross the globe and we are hitting the biggest recession in something like 80 years. We will see more empty stadiums, reduced TV deals and clubs struggling to pay the massive salaries they have on thier books.
I can understand United's hesitance as I don't think any player is worth 120 mill right now considering all this, and no one is quite sure that the 'new' market values will be.
I think it's totally unrealistic to believe in this day and age Dortmund, who are all about money, will hold on to Sancho for 3 years and run down his contract. It's a nonsense. When does this actually happen in football with top players?

Eh, you lose a bit if you sell him at all really. The money doesn’t matter at the end of the day, it’s not like all 120m is going straight back in to the squad. Even if it did, you can’t replace players of a certain calibre. So unless the main joy you take out of following the team is when you profit on your best players, it’s a bit of a lose. We lost by selling Ronaldo to Real Madrid even though it was an insane amount of money at the time, I’d rather we kept him.

Bayern got 3 players from BVB:
1. Lewandowski - probably (no proof, but a lot of signs show in this direction) had a "contract" with Bayern 2 years even before the contract with Dortmund ended. For example Kucharski and Co. already celebrating Bayerns CL victory vs Dortmund in Bayerns lounge -> nothing BVB could have done
2. Götze - bought with the help of a release clause -> nothing BVB could have done
3. Hummels - was sold for 35 Mio, which at that day was a big, big transfer fee for a fullback with 1 year left on the contract. Additionally Hummels asked for BVBs support in this matter, because his wife wanted to migrate to Munich with their unborn child
BVB did not have the financial power at that time, being nearly bankrupt in 2005, to fight against the transfers of Lewandowski and Götze.
I think the times that players from BVB go to Bayern for peanuts are very much over. BVB has grown enormously in finances and can nearly match the big wages in Europe.
BVB and Bayern have a big rivalry, because Bayern bullied (bullied = used their financial power as the leagues undisputed No 1) BVB to give up 3 of their star players when they were a very small and fragile flower. I'd rather give Sancho to Utd for 80 Mio then getting 120 from Bayern, but that might be just me.
So I hope I can help to get rid of this myth that BVB gives away players to Bayern basically for free. Because it is no longer true.
I think that if Dortmund start to hold on to all this young talent longer than they want to be there then their carefully crafted image of being a good place to go and get first team football will start to evaporate.
Let's not kid ourselves, Sancho didn't join BVB to be there for 5+ years, and neither did Bellingham or Haaland.
If they start to compete for the bundesliga and CL again like under Klopp then that might help, but even then their best players wanted to move on to clubs with more renown.
They're in a tricky spot; quite rightly they don't want to be "bullied" or seen as a selling club, but that's what they've set themselves up as. If the only way you can leave is to run down your contract like Lewa did, then there's a chance players will think twice before switching there in the future.
We are in our worst period in long time, still since SAF retired we have got more trophies to show than them. Dortmund meanwhile are seemingly always on the up, supposedly a big club, by far 2nd best domestically but keep selling their players and won only 1 domestic cup since 2012 I think. Are also known to be bitch of their biggest rival. Smart arse tweets are all they can do. No point getting angry or sad with that. I mentioned it before but it was lovely that Mkhi scored in final and won Europa league when all Dortmund could do is sarcastically tweet "best of luck in Europa league" to the departing player.
I would rather not deal with this club, to be honest. There's a trend of young players choosing Dortmund or similar clubs as a stepping stone and expect to be bought by a bigger club for absolutely stupid money a couple of years later, instead of going straight to the bigger club. The next sagas are Haaland (he was smart enough to get a release clause though) and Bellingham. These three players all had the option to join United, but chose Dortmund instead. I say let's forget about them instead of being extorted and being used in this silly game.

I‘m sure everybody understands that it‘s a great situation that Dortmund have themselves in. They scouted a fantastic talent, signed him and have increased his value more than tenfold. What‘s not to love about that as a Dortmund supporter.

In fairness to Dortmund, they are doing exactly what they are reasonably expected to and playing the market as much as we are. They have a track record of getting big talents and moving them on to bigger clubs, so all parties are pleased.
As annoying as Zorc is, we can't really expect them to bend over just because we want their player. He will try and get the best fee possible and that's what he's doing.
We will end up paying the 120m EUR, but if Sancho played for other clubs it would still be a very difficult task to reach a fee agreement with the selling club. He's a superb once in a generation player and potential balon d'or winner.

You think it’s a fact he’s staying - I’m merely pointing out that your club have said the same thing about 3x other players in recent history and you sold them all. Ofcourse it's not off yet. It's all sides flexing Muscles at the moment. We could always walk away and spend that money (plus a bit) on Rice , Grealish and VdB and look to make Greenwood our Sancho. In a nutshell if we get Sancho great he looks to be a perfect fit ,lf not there are loads of options out there to strengthen our Squad in a time when money is going to be hard to come by , and plenty of clubs will realise that sooner rather than later .

This myth has been proven wrong half a dozen times in this very thread alone and it is still brought at least once every two pages. It is kinda amazing, actually. At the end of the day people will choose to believe what they want to believe.
The most ironic part about this whole argumentation of "if it would be this club they would have sold already" or "United tax" has a very strong possibility of being completely inconsequential as Dortmunds demands could have nothing to do with the other club but would be set terms between Sancho and Dortmund under which he is allowed to leave. That is still the only explanation I can think of why they went against their usual way of handling sales and made details of their demands so obviously public.

Yup. They might not have a shitload of suitors next summer, but given the length of his contract it simply means that they won't be forced to budge on their valuation. Difficult to see Dortmund losing out here.

Exactly. I don't think there's any chance of a discount here - the only question is whether we are willing/able to come up with a payment structure for the €120m that has enough of the money upfront to satisfy Dortmund.
