Great debate on why we should have signed Sancho last year rather than saving 20-30m… I agree, but let’s all realize that:

1. Last year’s Sancho chase wasn’t real. I’m convinced that the board WAS NOT going to sanction 120m spend during a pandemic. They played the waiting game to see if Dortmund would lower their price. They didn’t, and we never made an offer.
2. The last minute business we did with Telles and VdB were when we realized Dortmund would not come down. The fans and Ole would be furious if there was no squad investment. We went bargain bin shopping without a plan and it showed.
3. The Amad and Pellistri signings were always youth signings and did not affect the Sancho bid.

in retrospect, it would have been smarter to pony up last summer. I truly believe we would have made a more authentic title challenge with Sancho. Remember, we were top of the league in January. Sancho would have made a difference in dealing with packed defenses. Some of those draws would have been wins.

As it is, we now have a longer shopping list (CB, DM, ST) and it’s just another year until we can field a truly elite squad. That’s the true crime of last summer. If we’d strengthened in those areas, we’d be talking about Sancho being the final piece.

That’s quite easy to say now that we know they did not sanction it. The chase was real, but the price was too high. I don’t think they were as stupid as they looked, though. They probably decided how much they would pay, around 90m, offered something similar to Dortmund, and saw how they reacted.

People ask why they didn’t walk away earlier. Beacuse they didn’t know if Dortmund would change their mind or not. They also seem convinced that the board didn’t know or didn’t believe the 10th August deadline. They probably knew everything better than us and I’m sure they acted accordingly. Sometimes they look like clowns in the media but that’s because we don’t know the whole story.

I think there's a lot of 'What if's' and revisionism going on. Sancho makes us a better team. But I'm not sure overpaying by like 30 or 40m for him last year makes us the final piece that would have had us beating City to the title. And if Sancho last year was the 'final piece' why do we still need a CB, DM and ST?

We probably would've needed Sancho at 20 to have a 40 goal season. That most likely wouldn't have happened.

Our draws in the big games let us down. Sancho would have titled a lot of those points in our favour. City arent this perfect team thats made out.

Not really ? Pretty sure football doesn't even work like that. Having Sancho wouldn't have just transformed all these draws into wins on his own.

Time for people to adjust their expectations for the kid a little bit as it almost feels like you're expecting Messi to join us and the pressure on him will be ridiculous to deliver.

The argument for spending 120M is always "we might have had a better title challenge". It's just not a credible reason. Transfers can't always be a success and basically pinning our title hopes on spending 120m a 21 year old would have been stark raving mad. There's a lot to have ago at ed, joel and co, but not spending the obscene money asked for Sancho at the time of a global pandemic, is not one.

Pretty much what I was trying to get at in my last post, but it's such a reductive POV.

Looking back is pointless. I think Sancho = our RW sorted for the next 5 years.

Rashford would be LW/ST, and Greenwood would be RW/ST. I still think we'd need one more big player in that space e.g. Haaland or an unsulky, consistent Martial. But for next season with Cavani, we'd be in great shape.

Need to solve midfield and defense quickly, though.

Sancho might have tipped SOME of those points in our favour. He also might have struggled to adapt to the premier league and in our setup. City are not a perfect team no, but despite my dislike for them you can't deny that they're a WELL functioning team that don't rely on only one player 'making the difference' as you're hypothesising Sancho might have done for us. When De Bruyne was out of the team injured they just rolled on and got results anyway. Could we have said the same if Bruno had been out of our team for an extended length of time? Sancho will be a very important piece of the jigsaw puzzle for us. But let's not pretend his signing is nailed on to make us champions this year or would likely have tipped the scales in our favour last year. It's a huge leap.

I like the bolding and the capitalization. It's like an article from The Sun or something.

Be it today, tomorrow or Wednesday
I'd love to see Sancho in a red shirt soon so we can move on to the next target
Greedy feckers Woodward/Glazers will probably want the new kit announced though before announcing Sancho, keeping us all waiting

Didn't like it when we held off on announcing Pogba for maximum social media exposure
Alexis's unveiling was bollocks too
You'd ideally like to see some sort of confirmation from the club so fans can breathe out

Thinking Murtough/Fletcher will want this done quickly to show their ability to pull off a deal
Once Sancho's done I'd like to see us go all out for Varane
Did all the Pau Torres links die down?
Are we really in for Camavinga?
Young players in all positions to build for the future?

Genuinely think anyone crying and whinging over an announcement taking too long are proper proper daft. We're already busy on other transfer business by the looks of things, its not as if nothing else can be done until we tweet that Sancho has signed for heavens sake

Its about perception around the football world too. United seem to have an awful reputation in football regarding our dealings in the market and are seen as a soft touch. More money than sense. There's no doubt that this negatively influences everything we try to do in our recruitment.

Slowly that perception is changing. We refused to negotiate on the sell on for Zaha when buying AWB. Bruno eventually came for a good price. DVB was seen as great business at the time and we got Cavani on reduced terms. All through being patient and willing to walk away. These things have an impact, and we are not perfect but our reputation is improving.

Sancho is another example of that. Could we have won something this season? Hmm maybe, but it would have sent the wrong message to cave in to Dortmund, and they may not have taken such a stance were it another club making moves to sign him. They probably believed that if anyone would pay up it would be United. As it is now we are getting a fantastic young player for a very reasonable price, and IMO many people aren't nearly excited enough about this (bored, really?!?).

This reads like a song or a poem or something!

We need more threadmarks for people who don't have the time to follow the thread 24/7. Such as important tweets, posts from official Redcafe ITK's, and every time someone mentions it's going to be a Big Day. Just the relevant stuff, you know?

At first I thought I was reading a poem. Then lack of rhymes confused me but having read the whole thing I'm fairly certain it indeed is a poem.

I can only think @Hansi Fick is here to reply to every negative comment about the BL. Keep up the good work!
In reality I've been telling the poor desolate souls in this thread that the transfer was surely going to happen this summer, over and over again, for months. And that it was going to be a good one. And here we are.

I should have been getting therapist/pastor remuneration along with whatever Fabrizio Romano is making (can't be a lot)

This will be announced Wednesday once the krauts bounce out the English

Appears we’re saving a fair whack more than 20m.

What we are getting now is a player at that represents good value. The players we bought last season were also at prices that represented good value.
So what we’re about to have is 4 players that represent good value rather than one player on a massive rip off.
Sometimes it’s simply better to wait, without Sancho we still improved every aspect of our season from the previous.

In life, we should always look at the glass as half full. So you're implied broader point that we should be happy we're landing Sancho now is very well taken.

That said, please allow me to quibble. According to the latest media reports I've read we're looking a transfer fee for Sancho that will land at 90m euros, which works out to 77m pounds. It was reported last year that Dortmund were holding out for 120m euros. I have no idea what the exchange rate from euros to pounds was last summer, but 100m pounds was a number I saw thrown around. If that's true, we're going to save 22m pound in transfer fee for Sancho. No idea about incentive payments. True, we did not have to pay Sancho's wages last season but I'm not sure I would regard that as a plus in pros and cons of bringing in Sancho last summer.

But the net of it all is that we saved about 23m by waiting a year on Sancho alone. Could he have helped us push much further in the PL and CL last season? I believe the answer has to be yes. But if the answer is no, then why even spend 77m on him now if we don't believe he will help us push much further in the PL and CL this season?

What we do know for an absolute fact is that Diallo, Pellistri and Van De Beek cost United 63m (not including add-ons, which we'll ignore here, and we're not going to worry about wages here) and that none of them contributed significantly to our push for PL and CL glory last season. All fantastic young players, ones to watch for the future, but in no way could it be argued that they were regular starters or significant contributors.

We also know we came in second in the PL. It's reasonable to believe that the inclusion of Sancho in the squad would have been a significant plus in our PL title challenge, but it seems highly unlikely that even with Sancho that we could win the PL title. But what about the CL? Speculation again of course, but it seems likely that with Sancho we would have pushed on into the knockout stages. We likely would have been turned over by someone, but then again look at Chelsea. At the very least, having Sancho in the side against Villareal would have given us a much better chance of lifting the EL trophy, although with Sancho it's likely we would never have gotten dumped into the EL.

I do not concern myself that much with the FA and league cups.

In the end did Woodward play his cards brilliantly by not agreeing to Dortmund's fee last summer and getting Sancho this summer for 23m less? In light of us spending 35m on a player we barely ever used and seems a fish out of United's tactical waters and who seems likely to be sold at a loss or kept on a rarely used squad player, I'd say no. Diallo and Pellistri are ones for the future and maybe they make a substantial impact this season or maybe we make a profit selling them but neither made a substantial impact to United's two main trophy hunts last season. I really like the look of Diallo and Pellistri, but it's not likely either will be long term regular starters for us after we bring in Sancho. Unless, of course, we let go of Rashford or Greenwood, but that's not happening, nor should it.

But here we are and all we can is hope that Woodward or whoever is driving the bus at United doesn't take this to the last day of the transfer window to bargain this down by another 1 or 2m.

23 million pounds less and not get ripped off on a player, eventually picking up the player at a price that represents good value.
feck yes he did. 23 million pounds is Amad + change.

This isn’t Ronaldo we’re talking about who would’ve turned our season into something spectacular, he’s a very good young player that’ll improve us for sure but you’re setting him up for massive failure if you think he suddenly turns our Leipzig clusterfeck into a result. The final is neither here nor there, it’s one game, maybe he’d have had a stormer or maybe like most of our players, a fecking stinker. Who knows, but twenty three million pounds worth it wasn’t.
Most likely even with Sancho, our season would have been very similar. But Sancho + Cavani + new CB + Amad and well, now you’re building something. For too long United and their fans have been of the stupid belief that one player will be the key and that spunking everything to get that one player will make all the difference.

Also important as a club to be firm in your valuation of a player.

He literally explained in the post you quoted a valid reason why we wouldn't. If a deal's been struck there's no reason for either side to announce anything while the player can't pass a medical, sign and get formally presented. How would announcing a verbal deal "get it out the way" when nothing can officially be signed while the player's on international duty.
I also explained in my post a valid reason why we may do. Anything else is just guess work. We've announced agreed fees multiple times in the past to not rule it out rather than waiting a couple of weeks for the Euros to finish.
