Great debate on why we should have signed Sancho last year rather than saving 20-30m… I agree, but let’s all realize that:
1. Last year’s Sancho chase wasn’t real. I’m convinced that the board WAS NOT going to sanction 120m spend during a pandemic. They played the waiting game to see if Dortmund would lower their price. They didn’t, and we never made an offer.
2. The last minute business we did with Telles and VdB were when we realized Dortmund would not come down. The fans and Ole would be furious if there was no squad investment. We went bargain bin shopping without a plan and it showed.
3. The Amad and Pellistri signings were always youth signings and did not affect the Sancho bid.
in retrospect, it would have been smarter to pony up last summer. I truly believe we would have made a more authentic title challenge with Sancho. Remember, we were top of the league in January. Sancho would have made a difference in dealing with packed defenses. Some of those draws would have been wins.
As it is, we now have a longer shopping list (CB, DM, ST) and it’s just another year until we can field a truly elite squad. That’s the true crime of last summer. If we’d strengthened in those areas, we’d be talking about Sancho being the final piece.
We probably would've needed Sancho at 20 to have a 40 goal season. That most likely wouldn't have happened.I think there's a lot of 'What if's' and revisionism going on. Sancho makes us a better team. But I'm not sure overpaying by like 30 or 40m for him last year makes us the final piece that would have had us beating City to the title. And if Sancho last year was the 'final piece' why do we still need a CB, DM and ST?
Our draws in the big games let us down. Sancho would have titled a lot of those points in our favour. @Lash @bosnian_red @Bondi77
Pretty much what I was trying to get at in my last post, but it's such a reductive POV.Not really ? Pretty sure football doesn't even work like that. Having Sancho wouldn't have just transformed all these draws into wins on his own.
Time for people to adjust their expectations for the kid a little bit as it almost feels like you're expecting Messi to join us and the pressure on him will be ridiculous to deliver.

Sancho might have tipped SOME of those points in our favour. He also might have struggled to adapt to the premier league and in our setup. City are not a perfect team no, but despite my dislike for them you can't deny that they're a WELL functioning team that don't rely on only one player 'making the difference' as you're hypothesising Sancho might have done for us. When De Bruyne was out of the team injured they just rolled on and got results anyway. Could we have said the same if Bruno had been out of our team for an extended length of time? Sancho will be a very important piece of the jigsaw puzzle for us. But let's not pretend his signing is nailed on to make us champions this year or would likely have tipped the scales in our favour last year. It's a huge leap.
That's why I didn't bother reading it.I like the bolding and the capitalization. It's like an article from The Sun or something.
Announce Big DayAnnounce Sancho already dammit.
Be it today, tomorrow or Wednesday
I'd love to see Sancho in a red shirt soon so we can move on to the next target
Greedy feckers Woodward/Glazers will probably want the new kit announced though before announcing Sancho, keeping us all waiting
Didn't like it when we held off on announcing Pogba for maximum social media exposure
Alexis's unveiling was bollocks too
You'd ideally like to see some sort of confirmation from the club so fans can breathe out
Thinking Murtough/Fletcher will want this done quickly to show their ability to pull off a deal
Once Sancho's done I'd like to see us go all out for Varane
Did all the Pau Torres links die down?
Are we really in for Camavinga?
Young players in all positions to build for the future?
I shed a tear and had a wank. This reads like a song or a poem or something!

Aren't we all?Seems like Ducker fully expecting England to lose to Germany

In reality I've been telling the poor desolate souls in this thread that the transfer was surely going to happen this summer, over and over again, for months. And that it was going to be a good one. And here we are.I can only think @Hansi Fick is here to reply to every negative comment about the BL. Keep up the good work!
I shed a tear and had a wank.
Yeap, we might have won the Europa with Sancho also. Our draws in the big games let us down. Sancho would have titled a lot of those points in our favour. City arent this perfect team thats made out.
I think England might win tomorrow.Aren't we all?

Home advantage and will no doubt want to beat Germany.
England also have a good team.

Appears we’re saving a fair whack more than 20m.
What we are getting now is a player at that represents good value. The players we bought last season were also at prices that represented good value.
So what we’re about to have is 4 players that represent good value rather than one player on a massive rip off.
Sometimes it’s simply better to wait, without Sancho we still improved every aspect of our season from the previous.
In the end did Woodward play his cards brilliantly by not agreeing to Dortmund's fee last summer and getting Sancho this summer for 23m less?
I also explained in my post a valid reason why we may do. Anything else is just guess work. We've announced agreed fees multiple times in the past to not rule it out rather than waiting a couple of weeks for the Euros to finish. He literally explained in the post you quoted a valid reason why we wouldn't. If a deal's been struck there's no reason for either side to announce anything while the player can't pass a medical, sign and get formally presented. How would announcing a verbal deal "get it out the way" when nothing can officially be signed while the player's on international duty.
