Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

The way I see it, if that happened then it's not doom and gloom. You never know if the player would want to move. If they did, you have a bargaining chip. Maybe there would have a talented player that we want, then we have something to talk about.

I don't think we as fans take too kindly to our stars going before time, if at all, tbh.

There's a significant risk that an Iberian is going to pack his bags the moment Real or Barca show an interest. That may put us off that avenue (if any single thing would).

Martinez looks the business and he's clearly a better player than Rodwell at the moment, but if we're going to put our eggs in a particular basket, I reckon we'd take Rodwell over him.

Well Belgium play with that Defour-Witsel-Fellaini midfield whenever possible, and Kompany-Vermaelen centre back so not much room for Vertonghen to fit through no real fault of his own.

Indeed but I'm pretty sure he's actually a defender anyway, supposedly quite a good one.

back in 2000

By the time Babbel was turning ill, I am pretty sure it was carragher and Xavier stepping in to replace him. Gerrard was a fulltime midfielder by then.

There we go then I thought the Babbel thing might be bit revisionist on my part and it would seem to the case given that Babbel joined at the end of the 99/00 season. (IIRC)

It was only two years ago that Toivonen and Berg - the Swedish strike duo - were probably the two most impressive attackers in the competition. I think they've yet to establish themselves in the Swedish national team and they're both nearly 25. I was thinking maybe it was different with midfielders as it's harder to impress and show maturity at that age as you had the likes of Khedira and Ozil excelling in the same tournament, but then you go back to list of best midfielders from 07' that were nominated for team of the tournament and...

Royston Drenthe
Otman Bakkal
Nigel Reo-Coker
Miguel Veloso
Manuel Fernandes
Jan Vertonghen
Alberto Aquilani

They're not all poor players but none are good enough midfielders for us either. It is easy to get carried away.

It should be added that Toivonen has 34 goals in 75 matches for PSV as an attacking midfielders - his biggest problem has been his temper.

So even if he hasn't established himself in the swedish team - there is probably a reason why a lot of clubs have been scouting him in the last 12 months including Liverpool

I think he has established himself in the Swedish team now. In 2010 he was in the starting lineup in 5 of their 7 friendlies and has also been in the starting lineup in 5 of their 6 Euro 2012 qualifying matches. I've only seen him a few times for PSV and once for Sweden since the U21 Euros but I have liked what I have seen. I think he could do well for a lot of Premier League clubs.

1) Aston Villa guy, he knows everything - MON sacking, Bent signing, Houllier heart problems, McLeish, Dunne`s alcohol problems, ......)
2) Everton guy, i acutally hate him but he knows his stuff about the Everton transfers
3) De Gea medical

We will sign two 100%!!!!!!!!

thanks for all the info Sean. much appreciated.

2 midfielders taking into consideration Scholes leaving and Giggs part-time, Gibson leaving, Hargreaves gone makes sense.

Did the signing of Jones end our interest in Rodwell or was it cooling anyway? Seems a pity I thought he would have fitted in well at United!

Think our interest cooled last season, think his lack of development and injury problems have probably put us off.

Any idea what is happening on this deal Sean? Would be a perfect end to the Summer if we get him. Could grow into an absoloute beast here, if we get him early enough...

I would imagine that with what Fergie has recently said, Rodwell may not be the best fit if he really wants to bring Pogba through...

Roswell seems very unlikely now with Smalling, Jones, Cleverley, Morrison and Pogba all at the club. Certainly for any of the prices quoted in the past. I'm sure we'd take a punt on him for £10m but couldn't see us paying £20m now.

I've seen/heard Morrison being brought up into conversations about centre mids tons of times, so I need to ask - does he or can he play in centre mid 2? As I always thought he's a winger or attacker (forward or the Rooney position).

A move for Rodwell at this stage would probably be a bad decision. By his own admission he didn't have a great year last year.

Needs to stay at Everton and get himself back on track IMO.

I doubt he knows any more than anyone else.

He guaranteed 2 central midfield signings and although the transfer window is still open I think we can safely say that was bull shit.

Ironically, if he has a storming season and we decide to pay £25m for him, we'd have a bunch of people saying we should have got him on the cheap this year!

The difference is if he came now he wouldnt get a game.

I'd rather 20m for an inform Rodwell coming off a good season than a 10m gamble on him as is.

He has a lot to prove at Everton this year.

perhaps someone like obertan would have more info on that...

Still think Rodwell will be a very good player, wouldn't mind getting him at all.

I think he's got potential but we have kids with potential. Sometimes it makes sense to buy players like Jones but with Tunnicliffe/Pogba/Morrison and maybe one or two others coming through in midfield I think that trains passed. I think he might end up at Arsenal

I've spoken to this guy today.

- He's still 100% sure Rodwell is United-bound because Fergie is a big fan of him and Rodwell would only leave Everton for United, but he isn't anymore sure a deal will happen in this transfer window.
- Rodwell was injured again in pre-season.
- Everton have no money for new players.

I feel sorry about this......maybe i should've say nothing about this informations here.

What about the other midfielder you guaranteed? :smirk:

He has been mentioned on these boards for so long.

I've seen a number of Everton games but he is either injured or I don't even notice him.

What is he good at? Why does everyone go on about his potential? Is he really shite and overhyped?

He's a centreback who can play as an attacking midfielder or an attacking midfielder who can play as centreback.

Strangely enough that doesn't seem to mean that he is a very good defensive midfielder.

It's really not that difficult to see why he's so highly rated. He's a powerful, athletic midfielder who is composed and skilful on the ball and established himself as a PL regular - for a club in the top half of the table - when he was extremely young (started his first PL game, aged 17). He's still only 20 years old.

He's just had a poor season, mainly down to dreadful luck with injuries. For assorted Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime with goldfish memories, this means he's always been shite and over-rated.

To be fair he's never been able to break into that team consistently, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he isn't quite as good as people hope.

It hasn't helped that injuries hindered his development slightly but you don't get many CMs establishing themselves as part of their teams best XI when they're still teenagers, so that's not much of a slight on his ability.

No, not many do, but the really good ones are often able to. And he's been fit and left out for long stretches so I don't think it's so cut and dried, though I do think he'll probably become a really good player. I certainly wouldn't want Fergie spending a good amount of cash on him at the moment though.

What you do for Everton is not the same as what is required at United. I think it's a vicious circle. He might one day be a top player but he's priced as one based on nothing. He's another player who's overhyped/cost prohibitive. Our lads have the best exposure/coaching and I think it won't be a road we'll go down.

For me, the issue is I've never really understood the hype in the first place. I don't think I've actually seen him play a game and think "wow, great talented young player." For me, I've thought more "oh, Everton must have a lot of injuries, it's understandable that this guy's struggling a bit due to his age."

I just don't see the quality in him. I mean, with players like Cleverley, for example, in his last season at Wigan, you could see there was something there(although not to the extent he's likely to show this season), and if you compare him with players like Ramsey and Wilshere, I think the difference in the promising young midfielder-scale is absolutely staggering, so I just don't see someone spunking 25 million quid for this kid.

I really don't care what price he may or may not cost, I was just explaining why he's so highly rated. He's a very talented footballer. At least that's the impression I've got almost every time I've seen him play.

Funny you should mention Cleverley, he got left out of the Wigan starting XI a fair few time last season. Which just goes to show how it's possible to be a real talent and still end up on the bench if the manager prefers to go with more experienced players in tough PL games. He's a couple of years older than Rodwell too.

Cleverley is promising but people are going way overboard...

We need a world class CM... at lease one...
