Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

Players like Lampard, Parker, Fletcher etc among many others took quite a few years to realize thier potential. Same might happen with Rodwell

I had noticed that amidst of all the transfer rumblings for a new midfielder, Rodwell has slipped under even the biggest muppets' radars.

Not that I think a move is in the works. Just a thought.

He's an absolute idiot for thinking Lampard/Gerrard would start for Barcelona.

Out of those mentioned only Ferdinand (or a fit Terry) would start alongside Pique. Or Rooney out wide.

Ashley Cole would start for them though.

Is he going to end up a midfielder or defender?

Considering United have three young talented CB's in their squad now, and if Rodwell's development leads him to become a defender then you could surely rule United out of any move for him.

I'd love Arsenal to sign him, a quality young and extremely versatile talent (who Wenger could mould into anything) would be an excellent addition to the squad. He could provide cover in two key areas for us. And with Song heading off to the ACN (and Denilson on his way out) we'll definitely need another midfielder in the squad.

And then we could also lay claim to a few young quality British talents too, to rival United's Jones, Smalling and Evans. Not to mention having both Smalling and Jones, and Rodwell, Wilshere and Walcott playing alongside each other week-in week-out would be of great benefit to England.

I was impressed by England's U21 defense (Smalling-Jones-Walker) and forward line (Welbeck-Sturridge) but not its midfield especially CM. None of the players there can take United to the next level at least not for the time being.

Good post Cesc. His versatility (and capability in those positions) was the thing that I thought most vital to his game. Seemed like one of Fergie's boys before the deal for Jones was even discussed. Arsenal would do very well to land Rodwell. He's no Eboue.

I had to work Eboue in to incorporate this picture that I have stumbled upon for the first time.

Seems to me he's the most talented of the three, but the United pair look like natural born-defenders, whereas Rodwell needs to find himself a position less he become a halfway player.

I'm not entirely convinced.

I mean, he's a nice player. He's reasonably tidy on the ball, he seems composed, physically he is big and strong, and occasionally he shows a nice bit of skill or a good burst forwards.

But there's something missing. Does he have the tactical astuteness, the mental drive, the grit and determination, a bit extra close control with the ball, or vision and creativity off it. Not much really stands out about him as being exceptional, other than that he's a big lad who is tidy on lad and can play in defence or midfield.

My suspicion is that he will at the very best become a player like Carrick or Alex Song. Which would be a very good accomplishment. But I don't think he's going to be a star player at a top club or at international level.

Ooo, wasn't that controversial!!

He's a bit like Evans to me - good all round young player but does not yet have that star quality. The kind of player you persist with if they come through your own youth system but would not splash 15 million on. Having said that, I'd guess that he'll become a better midfielder than Henderson if he can add more drive to his game.

I still havent seen Rodwell play a really good game. The kind of position I could envisage him in is in a 3-5-2, as a ball playing defender/midfield who drops deep into the back line to allow the wingbacks to attack.

What I like about him is that he's very comfortable on the ball and whilst his passing isn't usually that adventurous he keeps possession better than any other midfielder in the U-21 set up. (discounting Wilshere and McEachran). For that reason he has to start every game.

I too think he'll end up with a role similar to Busquets and I'm guessing the main reason why he isn't playing there now is because he lacks a bit of discipline? Can't think of any other reasons considering he looks like he's built for the job.

Lack of experience.

Reasonable thoughts. Like many other English players he have the physique but need to develop his football skills.

I don't see the point of buying him really, especially for around £25m, when you could buy someone like Martinez or even Defour for a similar if not cheaper price.

I think he'd be a great like for like replacement for Carrick in a few years, and I think that's good thing.

He was absolutely awful last night although he seemed to have instruction to play behind the front man :wenger:

Could suggest you've answered your own question there.

No guarantee he'll ever be a really top class player but he's a young lad with composure and the athleticism to really improve at a top side if guided in the right direction and if he has the luck.

I wouldnt have said he was awful. Mancienne was by far the worst - misplaced far to many passes. Looks too slow to be a midfield player and too small to be a centre half.

The whole side were poor in the first half but it was noticable that in the second, when he wnt off the Ukraine seemed to get a second wind.

I think Rodwell is a player who would do better surrounded by capable players, rather than being a big fish in a small pond. He looks clever defensively, and positions himself well. He hasn't shown any grit from what I've seen of him or the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck. As someone has said he looks like a similar play to Carrick, in the way he can break up play and slow down attacks, although is a bigger lad with less passing range. He appears efficient.

I`ve my informations........he will be a Manchester United player this season ;)

The deal isn't fully completed yet because one player could go in the other direction or Welbeck goes on-loan to Everton BUT Rodwell will join Manchester United.

Well you were right about De Gea, I'll trust you on this one mate!

I will not be happy if we spend more than £12m on him IF we get him this season because he has not proved himself enough over the last 12-15 months to warrant a high price move to United. I feel he needs another season of regular football at Everton to fully see his potential.

Haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion but some people rate him very highly. His injury record is not the best and he would command a big fee, if this is true then I hope he is not the only CM signing we make.

instead of Wellbeck, would it be Brown and a loan deal for either Macheda or Diouf?

Wellbeck looks a solid bet for one of 4 strikers for us.

You can't post that andnot expect to be asked questions, where is your information comin from?
ITK guy from Everton FC

I`m not a WUM and i would`n post lies about something like a transfer, just look through the "Ashley Young thread".......my informations were 100% correct about this whole transfer because of my informations from a ITK guy from Aston Villa.

I would be extremely disappointed if he is the midfielder signing all of us have been waiting. I mean, anything below 10mil cash with players going in exchange is fine, but our coffers should be used for a star midfielder who can dictate the tempo and pace of our football and Rodwell is far from that. At best, i see him as a Tom Huddlestone.

How reliable is this source in comparison with your source at Villa and the source who told you De Gea's medical was today?

Rodwell is no better than what we currently have in midfield and thats saying something, i wouldn't be against his signing along with a proper ready made high class midfield player that we so desperately need but if hes the midfield signing of the summer i will be very disappointed, we surely cant let ANOTHER summer go by and ignore the blatant inadequacies in our central midfield.

Rodwell may join us. But I still think Fergie will get a proven midfielder.
