Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

Except Rodwell hardly has presence whenever he's played.

Well if your taking some performances of his at underage level in Internationals and from what I have read at Evertons academy too then he has been miles ahead of everyone else his own age so that has to be taken into account!

We don't need players who perform at underage levels at this moment in time. We need players who can do it at the level United are at. Potential is one thing, but demonstrating it at Premiership level needs to be taken into consideration.

Players like David Jones or Kieron Richardson were all well and good at our reserves level, but couldn't make the step up. When we bought players with potential like Wayne Rooney/Ronaldo/Anderson/Nani, they were all showing their potential at their former clubs at their highest league levels.

With Rodwell, everytime I see him play in the premiership, the game always passes him by. Not the type of player we need at this moment, especially in our midfield.

Rodwell has had some very good performances at a very young age in Evertons midfield over the last few years in the Uefa cup and PL this season he hasnt been very good but thats mainly because of injures.

Two words: Chris Smalling.

That worked out pretty well for us, given that he'd been 'demonstrating it at Premiership level' for all of about 2 games when we signed him.

I'd wait before raving so much about Smalling. The young defender has been doing well. On the other hand our past new best thing is swiftly turning from the new Vidic to the new O'Shea.

Anyway I am perfectly comfortable with Smalling. He's promising and had proved the right backup for Vidic-Rio. Unfortunately things are slighty different in CM. We dont need quality cover for world class players there.

He's abit injury prone, don't you gimps think? And i don't know what he has done so far in an Everton shirt that warrants such a big fuss except that goal he scored against United. One would have thought he has been doing a Gareth Bale.

That's kind of beside the point. The argument was that Rodwell isn't proven world class in the Premier League so we shouldn't sign him. Smalling had barely played for Fulham since signing from a non-league side but we signed him, completely unproven. Now he's been probably our second best defender this season and started in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Jonny Evans really has nothing to do with it as, last time I checked, he was a different person than Smalling or Rodwell.

If the scouts and Sir Alex think he's good enough and Sir Alex wants him, we'll sign him. If not, we won't.

When we signed Smalling, I was one of the very first to say that if he does well, then he stands a chance of being our third choice defender. I still remember the reaction that statement stirred in here. No one could believe that Smalling would be able to push Evans to the bench but I believe in the possibility, not because I rated Smalling (i've watched him about 4 times at Fulham) but because I knew that young players (in this case Evans) tend to be highly inconsistent. OShea reminded me of Thuram in his first season. Look at him now. Same thing can be said about many defenders who started very well to then ending up not meeting the high expectations set.

Rodwell looks a promising midfielder. He did very well against us and was able to even score a wonder goal. On the other hand he's still struggling to become a first teamer at Everton's team + he looked like suffering from the Hargreaves syndrome. Now I wouldn't have minded having such kind of talent in the 99 team. I mean we had Keane and Scholes in their prime, Beckham could play there, Butt was decent etc. Rodwell would have been our midfield's answer to Smalling. On the other hand this midfield needs something more consistent that a promising midfielder with a special fetishness to the treatment room.

Didn't notice him too much yesterday apart from that shot which VDS saved.

He looks tall, quite athletic in the way he moves around but was relatively quiet during the match...

Yeah he did not really make an impact from the one shot on goal. He has had a pretty poor season. I am not sure spending 20-25m on him anymore is worth it.

I think he'll go for less than those quoted amounts, if he does indeed depart this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if United's interest has cooled a bit.

I think if he's the 'type' of player the boss has identified, form won't really come into the equation.

Not the right time to be spending £20m plus on a young injury prone rookie, need an established midfielder..

I still think he will become the dogs B! Next season will be his year and then he will be worth huge amounts if no one gets in there early. Bale was a laughing stock for a very long time. Everyone on here kept going on about how average Wilshire was last year when he was at Bolton yet he is young player of the year now and will become a super player very soon. I think Rodwell fits into the same category as Wilshire and Bale in terms of potential but just needs time.

Is he really that much better a prospect than Tunnicliffe or Pogba, who are only 2 years younger?

Probably not bigger prospect than Pogba. But Fergie would be the one to ask that. Remember not too long ago Eikrem was being hailed as the new Scholes and he is now at Molde. Gibson once won Reserve player of the year so very hard to tell!

I think he is better than Tunnicliffe but Pogba? I don't think so. With the way Pogba is progressing, not a chance. I would like to see Pogba go out on loan next season to maybe a Championship team and see if he can get regular playing time. He just turned 18. So playing him in the first team with just the reserve game experience might not be a good thing to do. If he goes out on loan for a season, when he comes back he will be 19 and he can in FA and CC games the following season because he would have gained some valuable experience.

Pogba's barely established himself in the reserves as yet, let's give him a chance to prove himself before we call him better than Rodwell.

I like the look of him and he's a feasible target, i.e. I don't think City will tap him up so he doesn't come here and Everton will not hold us to ransom because they could use some money to fill up spaces in their short squad. He is definitely a better option than Henderson who doesn't strike me as a type of player that would improve our midfield. A lot of work will have to be done before Rodwell becomes one but potential is there, I think we might go for him in the Summer if the price is right.

At one time he was touted at 30 million which is a joke...

But having watched him a few times this season even 20 million is too much.

There is definitely potential there, but he's been injured so often that I can't see how anyone can pay more then 10-15 million for him. Then again, we did pay 7 million for the homeless hobo that nobody had ever seen play so it's entirely possible we splurge on Rodwell who is significantly more talented.

Manchester City want Everton's Jack Rodwell | Mail Online
Manchester City will begin preparations for life in the Champions League by bidding for Everton's Jack Rodwell.

The England Under 21 midfielder had been expected to sign for Manchester United this summer but interest from Old Trafford has waned in recent months.

City, though, have been tracking Rodwell as Roberto Mancini reshapes his squad for the stiff challenges they will face next season.

Everton have repeatedly maintained that they do not want to lose their best players and Rodwell undoubted falls into that category.

But manager David Moyes will have to raise money in order to revamp his own squad and Rodwell, who only signed a five-year deal 12 months ago, would command a transfer fee in the region of £20million.

Money is not a problem for the FA Cup finalists but they could try to tempt Everton with a cash-plus-player deal that may feature Emmanuel Adebayor or Craig Bellamy.

Rodwell's progress this season has been compromised by a series of fitness problems and he has scored only one goal in 26 appearances.

Pretty sure I've posted it a few times, but I've met Rooney's uncle (who lives down here in Melbourne) a couple of times now. And the last time I had a chat with him he was adamant Rodwell was United bound, which he was rather annoyed at since he's a die hard Toffee fan.

rodwell will come to us.

i rekcon it'll be a brown + cash + welbeck (loan) deal.

Player + cash deals almost never happen. It's something that only really exists in computer games and in the press.

It is rare, at least in England, but it does happen. Pugh went to Leeds as part of the Alan Smith deal. Gillespie to Newcastle when we got Cole...

Are they going to play 4 defensive midfielders now?

Nope they're doing the same thing that Chelsea did, just after they'd whored themselves to Roman. 'We want to be a big club so we'll sign United's targets with our whore money, because they are a big club...etc'

We all know that it does happen but it's so rare in this country yet gets suggested/touted all the time. I mean, how long ago was the Cole transfer!
