Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

Yep, but he could be going somewhere else next; smash and grab at Everton, hell they can have Berbs at a cut right price and I actually could see that happening Berb for Rodwell.

That won't happen. Berb is here to stay.

Better stay off the drugs then

If you are taking five CMs, then yes, you may take Rodwell instead of an older player who has limited chance of being a future England starter

I'm not certain you do take five IMs though, most teams will surely only take 4, two starters and two spares, unless you plan to play a 3-man central midfield, then you need that extra spare. I guess England could take five, as Gerrard is a wideplayer as much as he is a CM, and then Milner can be cover for both flanks and also maybe LB cover for Ashley Cole

But then, do you take Rodwell, as look at the midfielders we have, where's the destroyer, the Hargreaves or the Palacios or the Mascherano, that player who does just go round pressing the ball and kicking people (for want of a better word). You might want someone different to Rodwell

Rodwell is the destroy for Everton so why not for England ? Even though he lacks the experience, his physique and certainly his good experience in the PL should help him get through, not to mention that he does pass the ball well and does do the dirty work. I mean, I don't need to watch Everton regularly to know that he is a DM and he gives the freedom for the likes of Arteta and Cahill to support the front, and even when he has the chance, Rodwell does like to pop up from time to time, sort of like a box to box player who likes to defend more but can do the job upfront when asked. Gerrard from the looks of it will play as a LW though which is too bad. So If you consider Gerrard as LW, there still is a slot available for the MF, and also he can cover CB which Rio/Terry/Upson/Lescott can also cover but hey, I'm not Capello, but If I was him I'd certainly give Rodwell a call up.

I can't imagine Berbatov would accept a move to Everton when he could pick from quite a few continental clubs.

He's just letting his FM mind run away with him there i think.

some rumours going round that Rodwell was benched for tonights game after Everton got wind of a meeting between Rodwell and United.

Don't have a link to these rumours, may have been posted elsewhere on this site.

I thought he's been on the bench since all the experienced players returned? So he must have met United every matchday since New Year for that rumour to be true.

I just quoted you so the rumour must hold some truth.

I know that this will be in the future taken out of time (when Rodwell would probably be an important English international regular) and ridiculed but while I do rate the guy I don't that we should spend more then 15m on him (I don't mind if the fee go a bit higher but only as add ons).

Stating that, there is all the criteria needed to invest. The boy is English (he fits perfectly in the FA nation trained rule), he can play in defense and midfield (versatility will be precious in the FA new 25 players only rule), he is still young and has all the skill needed to make it.

This is not that bad as this though
I believe that it all boils to one simple question.
Do you think that it is worthwhile to sign Rooney at 25m?

There is no doubt that Rooney would be a reasonable good player, although Id wait before labelling him as the next big thing. I mean many were those players who were labelled as Everton’s answer to Mickey Owen, from Jeffers to Cadamarteri right to Radzinski yet none of these players had fulfilled that expectation. Right?

Rooney may have the raw talent to become special, but in my opinion 25m is a bit too much for him. I mean we are talking about a player who is struggling to break into Everton’s team. A player who despite scoring some important goals seems struggling to keep up with the consistency needed in every EPL’s standard player. And by only saying that we are ignoring the fact that Rooney’s negative attitude (his aggressivity and the fact that he is getting fat by the minute) are unacceptable, and difficult to be tackled.

I know that I am being a bit too harsh about an 18 year old, but feck we are talking about a 25m investment. In today’s football 25m is a hell of a sum, and at half that price you can bring a young ready-made world-class striker.

I agree with you that many here are stressing too much about the fact that Rooney is a Scouser. Yet, this fact should be given its weight. I mean, it would be difficult for any Scouser to give his heart and soul to our cause and this should be taken in account especially if we hope to sign him for 25m

10m would be the right price for him
Lets hope that history repeats itself.

It was pretty much the same thing I am saying now. And if you take in account the time it was being said I agree with it completely.

I hope so too.

Every man and their dog knew Rooney was going to be a top player! Can't believe you thought differently. I especially like the bit about him being inconsistent - he was 18, man!

As for Rodwell, I think he's going to be a top player too. For someone so young he knows that midfield role so well. He's a big lad with two good feet and he looks like nice lad with his feet grounded.

If it takes a large offer to get a young english player who looks like he's going to go right to the top then I think its well worth the reported fees.

Well the truth is that no one was ready to match the 20m fee wanted by Everton at that time for him (we are talking pre Euro). Not to forget that after the EURO (when I wanted Rooney at all cost) we stepped in with an important fee only because Newcastle where offering 20m for him. Other clubs just stood at the window without even trying to get involved in a bidding war. Looking back it was one great gamble to take. Unfortunately no one can predict the future. Don't you think that if Juventus knew how good a certain Kaka would be, they wouldnt have turned him down because he had a silly surname? Not to forget the ''if Rio is worth 18m then how much would Wes cost'' said by a certain legend a couple of years back.

I think that Rodwell is pretty much at the same level Rooney was at that time with the difference that Rooney was more talented while Rodwell seems to be more mature (less fat, he doesn't get into brawls with players and referees all the time etc). He is still a gamble though. I mean the guy can turn great or a complete waste of money. Stating that, I think that 15m is a fair price for him.

My mate who is a free lance journalist has been saying for a while now that this boy is top on Fergie's summer list, and that United will do their best to sign him this summer and a deal is pretty close to done. He wont name his source. Make whatever you wish of that.

That'd be great, Carrick + Hargreaves ain't getting younger and Rodwell will certainly be pushing for a spot. Also, lets not forget that POGBA has been excellent in the reserves, would love him to pop up and get first team games.

I'll be shocked and disappointed if United dont get him, he is an immense talent, it is obvious to me that he is going to be a top player

Has he started playing for the reserves already?

He has only played one match for the reserves, so far.

Take it from me - a deal is close to being done - I'm not prepared to name my sources though

Guys

i hope your source is not the same one that saw Aguero's girlfriend looking for a house near manchester...

Rodwell is the kind of player that Manchester United just can't miss out on, just like Rooney - we knew that he had to end up here..

I'll say no more than this, but my source saw him going into the Rooney residence......disguised as Colleen but you could tell it was him because of the big feet and footballers legs. Facht. It's also a known facht in the ITK circles that I allow around me that young Wayne has put the word unto him.

Everton have to stick to their 'feeder club agreement', so I expect him to join us soon

He's going to be a top player, as obvious a dead cert since Rooney IMO.

Problem is, would Everton sell him now and where would we play him of he came? We're well covered in midfield and have signed Smalling to play at centre-half, a position a lot of people think Rodwell will eventually occupy.

If he comes here, it will be another year or two down the line IMO. He needs to keep developing at Everton and they need to keep him as long as they can as his value will no doubt increase year on year.

The more he develops at Everton the more we will have to pay for him. I would much rather we buy him now and loan him back to Everton if we have to.
