Ivan Perisic

This has been the worst thing about this saga.

The 'but Jose wants him'' crew with nothing else to add.

Come on! The worst thing by far has been the 'but I don't want him' children.

The people who then insist on a completely different kind of player to play in a totally different position.

It's beyond tedious.

When did Jose ever state he was looking to sign a player who could play across the line? Not seen those quotes.

Already stated Val gives us width on the right?
"Another one an attacking player, especially that can play through the wings to give me more attacking options but I never speak about players that belong to other teams.

It's perfectly reasonable to not want him.

It's perfectly pointless to keep screaming "but José wants him, that's all that matters!!!!". Yeah, we're aware of that. It's obvious. But this is a discussion forum where we discuss our opinions. We have no influence over anything and it's always the manager's decision in the end so if we just keep saying "but José says so!!!" then we might as well shut the forum down.

Well, they can have him. Bale, if available for 100 million, is a no brainer when the alternative is Perisic for 50 as it looks like inter don't want to go any lower. Bale may be a gamble with his injuries but Perisic for that money is just as much of a gamble as we don't know if he'll be able to step up and offer us what Jose's looking to add in our game. We'll see how it goes and which would've been the right choice.

As Inter struggle to respond to AC Milan wave of new signings they had decided to turn Perisic into some sort of symbol. The message is quite simple. Inter is still ambitious and the fact they can turn the great Manchester United down is clear testament of that. Meanwhile if United want Perisic then they will have to give a big sum of money + they must loan them a player of equal value (Martial).

I'd say we should move to other players. I wouldn't mind us re-signing ADM TBH. Sure, he left United on bad terms. However can you really blame him for not being happy with LVG and his tactics?

We shouldn't sign Perisic - Donnarumma and Varane are far better players.

This, makes no sense whatsoever to keep deferring to the manager's opinion on a discussion board where it would be reasonable to expect people to air their own opinions. Its like the Moyes feck up all over again where dissenters wouldn't be allowed to air out their misgivings without a tap on their wrists because "Fergie said stand by your manager" only for Fergie to disown the appointment twelve months later. You never know maybe Jose wanted him because he thought he could get a good, experienced player on the cheap but when Inter dug in he abandoned the idea and decided to see how the Neymar/Mbappe/Bale dominoes fell, which could explain why we never returned with a better offer once our FFP gambit failed but it won't stop people coming up with dubious assertions that he is the only one Jose could identify which is almost an insult to the man.

Yeah, no one said anything remotely close to that so nice strawman.

Might have well as. We're looking for a left-footed left-winger apparently. Therefore, it's pointless suggesting alternatives who aren't that. It's the final piece in a very specific system.

I don't think anyone is particularly in love with Perisic. I'd prefer a number of different things regarding playing style and signings, but there's a difference between that and what Jose's actually going to do.

But there's absolutely zero harm in discussing what we'd prefer. And it's enjoyable.

I reserve the right to be very concerned if Mourinho has indeed become so inflexible that Ivan Perisic is the only solution as the "final piece in a very specific system".

I agree with your first paragraph and am under the impression the second paragraph is largely the case.

I think the majority of people being accused of saying 'it's who Jose wants' are of the view that the signing is specifically intended to complete the system.

I don't think anyone is saying Jose is infallible. Notwithstanding Bale, I've got the impression it's Perisic or nobody and would prefer the manager to get his target than not.

It's not really Perisic v [player x] or Perisic v [player y] and people saying Jose wants Perisic so don't discuss the alternatives. It's about what people's understanding of what we're looking for is.

That's an inane remark and you know it perfectly well.

:lol::lol: It made me laugh at least.

He does have a point though, the fact that there are many players that Café members would rather us sign despite clearly not being the type of player Jose is looking for and this thread is a wonderful example of it. Im very much in the ''Jose wants him so trust the manager'' camp despite whatever personal reservations I might have. Still Im all for others voicing their opinions which is part of the appeal of the Café.

Its About the profile and attributes of the player. I am sure if Willian was available too then he would be an option as well.

So it's pretty much off for now.

Seems like we can only bet on Mkhi/Rashford/Martial then ?

Except neither of those 3 play in the position that Jose wanted Perisic for. It seems he wanted Perisic as he could play as LWB or LW. Whilst for a LW you can make an argument for another style of player, for LWB it is much more restrictive. That would mean Jose now has to choose between a LWB or a LW. He could go for a LW but that tramples on Martial, or he could go for a LB. The LB position seems harder to fill overall.

Perisic seems to have been a good fit because Mourinho felt he could cover LWB (if Shaw can't play there) or he could play LW.

The haters for Perisic on here generally want us to buy a Dembele or similar style inside forward, because lets be honest they are flashy and exciting, however that leaves us with shaw or Darmian at LWB and whilst Darmian is an OK LB he definitely doesn't seem cut out for an overlapping LWB to give width. I know he played there in a couple of games, but he is a fish out of water.

Perisic isn't a LWB

Like someone above already posted, Perisic has never played as a LWB. Dortmund fans here said that he was not good at working hard or tracking back and that's why he was sold off. Just because he isn't flashy, people here have peddled the myth that he is some hardworking left winger who can also play as a LWB. His skill at crossing has also been widely exaggerated on here.

Willian is a right winger. That would count him out of any left side role.

Perisic can play on both sides as well, What we are looking for is Work rate, Crosses , Defensive contribution, Good engine, and Counter attacking threat from wide areas who provides width as well which adds the necessary balance required for the tactics.

Nither Moses or alonso was and nither Ox was

He is perfect for that role and will fit there well when played in that Role.

They were cases of utilising what they already had Within there squads though.

You don't buy a £50 million winger and then play him out of position.

What's wrong in just buying an actual wing back?

Buying players and playing them out of position is a stupid habit that we have gotten into in recent years.

I have never said he was, but clearly Jose thinks he can play there, hence the pursuit, whether he can play there is another thing altogether. Jose is not an idiot he clearly knows about the other inside forwards available yet he isn't going for them. If he was purely after that kind of player there are many options, whilst he has not played as LWB one of the major complaints about Perisic was that he was a negative player. Personally don't give a shite for him, if we can get Rose or another better true LWB I would be happy with that. I suspect he hoped to pick him up for 30-40m for a player he thought would be good in multi roles down that side.

Nothing but what are the options at LWB, most people on CAF want Bale to play there.

One moment the man wants specialists, the next he wants multifunctional players, the next he wants to shoehorn players.

You're right, but I think the fact that we've moved on shows that we were never willing to pay anywhere near that fee for him. Some have reported that Perisic was a compromise in the first place and that he wasn't first choice, but Mourinho accepted getting him if it meant we improved other areas. We were probably alright with bidding up to £30/35m, but when Inter refused to budge, we moved on and started looking into Bale's situation. Mourinho has also been playing 5 at the back a fair bit in pre-season, but with Mourinho saying that he wants an attacking wide player, you're probably right in thinking that Mourinho wanted Perisic to play up front and not as a wing back.

Spending £100 million on Bale and then playing him at LWB would be the most ludicrous thing I've ever come across in football

If we were to buy a wingback it would leave us with less offensive options, and a more defensive setup by default. You can't criticise Mourinho for being too defensive and criticise him for not buying a wingback.

If only the Da Silva Twins would have developed the way we all thought they would :(

Our Main system is not 352, that's something we need to play to balance out the Chelsea and arsenal 343 systems Who were more balanced team than united when we played them when we lost to them.

Wingback is one of the role which suits him. We played a number of systems last year including 4141 and he can also play as a winger in a 4141 and 442 and as inverted wide forwards in a 433 or 4231 when we need to counter attack from deep and keep width with his ability to carry the ball from defense to attack and also contribute defensively.

50 m is a price which jose do not control, and we not not matching that price any way. As a player he has all the attributes which we need for balancing the team and the squad for our tactics which would improve our dynamics.

You can criticise him for being too defensive and for playing players out of position instead of recruiting a player with actual experience in said position. As in, you might not want United to play 3-5-2 but if we do then buy proper wingbacks instead of shoehorning a 28 year old who never played there.

That wasn't my point though. I was saying that you don't spend £50 million on someone that's played the majority of their career as a winger to them play him in an unfamiliar role.

If we are adopting a 352 formation I'd rather we buy an actual wing back than have the round hole, square peg situation again.
