Israeli - Palestinian Conflict

I don't know. They may be because he's an American. Typically I'd think this would have been swept under the carpet, but being caught on camera hitting a boy with the wrong passport could cost them.

Mentioning the American passport, any idea how your legal system would treat a minor who goes overseas and throws Molotov cocktails at security forces?

I'd imagine the visceral brutality of three grown men beating the hell out of a skinny teenage kid will trump anything the kid may have allegedly done, and any attempts to blame the kid for what happened to him will cast the Israeli government in an unflattering light. The international public may also be inclined to wonder how often this sort of thing goes on when the cameras aren't rolling.

Israeli warplanes killed 12 Palestinians Tuesday, pounding the Gaza Strip in a new campaign to stamp out Hamas rocket fire as the two sides slid toward another major conflict.

In central Gaza, one man was killed near Nusseirat refugee camp, medics said. Witnesses said he was a member of Hamas' armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades. Shortly afterwards, another four people were killed when a missile slammed into a car in Gaza City, medics said.
Relatives told Agence France Presse the victims were all Hamas militants. One was identified as Mohammed Shaaban, 32,who ran the Brigades' naval unit. Seven more people were killed and at least 25 wounded when a missile struck a house in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, medics said. There was no immediate word on their identities.

One can only hope that the fatalities include only the names of Hamas members and not innocent Palestinians (in the case of the house). A call up of 40,000 reservists means that a ground operation is imminent, just hope it goes smoothly (although extremely unlikely).

Also, breaking news around 35 minutes ago now: Hamas officials stated "all Israelis have become legitimate targets" after the deadly Israeli raid on a house in southern Gaza.

Turbulent times ahead.

Is there any pressure whatsoever put on the Hamas to stop firing the rockets or is this simply an inevitability and nobody is even trying anymore? Feel sorry for the innocent families being held hostage by those jihadist.

It would be great if this issue was that simple.

Is there any realistic chance to get rid of the Hamas completely or is "dealing a significant blow" as far as it can possibly get?

Naa. I see nothing more than a short operation, most likely without actually entering the Gaza strip, ending with a cease fire, which will only make the next time harder. Already tonight sirens were sounded in cities north of Tel Aviv, which didn't happen the last time. Hamas keeps getting rockets with further and further reach.

No one wants to get rid of Hamas because it will be chaos in Gaza without it, which would probably be even worse.

Hamas terrorists killed in attempts to cross the border into nearby kibbutzim. Searches still on to find others. A tunnel crossing the border was destroyed.

Rockets fired at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv intercepted by the Iron Dome. One Grad hit Ashdod, but no casualties thankfully. Sirens in Tel Aviv and towns north of Tel Aviv.

The murderers of the Arab kid are Jews. I wish they had death sentence in the legal system here. This crime is certainly one which would justify capital punishment.

Shame Jews only feel the "full force" of the civil law while Arabs have to face the ignominy of military law, no matter what age they are..

EDIT - And please remind me, have there been any updates on the search for the snipers who killed the two Palestinian youths weeks before the three settlers? Shouldn't be hard considering it was IDF snipers who did the deed... Will the homes of these murderers also be demolished? After all Netanyahu said that Israel doesnt distinguish between terrorists.

Hopefully Hamas terrorists are wiped out and no civilians are hurt, doubt it though.

Shame that people who know feck all about what's going on voice their so-called opinion after hearing crap on social media.

Tel Aviv is fairly safe, in the sense that people there have a minute to seek shelter if a rocket is launched from Gaza in their direction. The kids in Sderot have 15 seconds, and have been living this reality for 15 years now.

Hamas wont be getting wiped out because they are the ones the israelis prefer so that the conflict is given a religious colour rather than a nationalistic colour which is what it actually is. Initially hamas were aided by israel for this purpose only.

Hamas should be exterminated though.

I have quite a few friends from uni that live in Tel Aviv, and others that have gone there now for internships and community service. Is there an accurate number for how many Israelis have been killed by Hamas rockets during the last 15 years?

And how many years has it been now that Palestinian kids live with being humiliated, threatened and one being killed every 3 days?

The fact of the matter is a lot of these Israelis always have the luxury of going back to their cushy lives in Europe and North America, Palestinian kids on the other hand are born into an oppressive, macabre and stateless existence and there's nothing they can do about it.

I don't have statistics, but we'd be talking about a low number. Possibly 10-15? At first the rockets had very limited range and didn't contain too much explosives. They've improved, but we've also had the addition of Iron Dome which is doing great work intercepting those rockets.

But once you send that rocket into the air, especially the newer ones, it can fall anywhere and cause great damage.

What cushy lives in Europe? You mean those great cushy lives in the 1930's and 1940's?

Give me a British passport and I'm off to the UK tomorrow. Until then, shockingly, I don't quite have where to go.

I was referring to the North American, Australian and European Jews who in recent years are moving into illegal settlements for nice free homes at the expense of uprooted Palestinians. Not the Israelis who've been accustomed to living there for generations such as yourself I'd presume.

Overall, though, they are a small percentage of the population. And somehow I doubt their departures would change the Hamas's stance.

You're probably right in that it wouldn't change their stance, but it would lessen sympathy for them.

The siege over Gaza, the uprooting of Palestinians in the WB and the generally humiliating lives the Palestinians live is what vitalises the likes of Hamas and compels them to fire rockets.

If Israel wants to protect its citizens it should look introspectively instead of bombing 7 hells out of Gaza which ironically would have a counter-productive effect.

That would be the kind of defence policy that would be impossible to enact in a democracy, unfortunately.

Democracy may be the best system of government that mankind has come up with so far, but it still needs to respond to the visceral reactions of the uneducated masses. Elected governments are not immune from cutting off their nose to spite their face.

The smart thing would be to calm the tension rather than for Netanyahu flex his muscles. As the overwhelmingly superior force in the region (militarily and politically) Israel needs to take the lead rather than bemoaning the fact that Hamas, a rag-tag bunch of spackers, don't.

Its all academic. A Palestinian state isn't viable even if the 67 borders were enforced.

Gaza and the WB are already de facto ghettos under Israeli control. The only way out is for it to become a legal reality and the whole place to become a single state.

American support for Israel is the main thing stopping it from happening. I don't know how that'll change any time soon.

I don't think Egypt and Jordan would be particularly interested in a single Palestinian state either.

It's been done to death in the past. Initiating 'peace talks', releasing prisoners, etc. and it's never been good enough for Abbas. Meanwhile Hamas, the rag-tag bunch of spackers, is preparing yet another barrage of rocket attacks on the civilian population. Which is basically all they're good for.

A barrage of rockets that will cause 0 death, as opposed to the MASS MURDER that is occuring in Gaza as we speak. Israel is clearly an evil state, and there is still people defending them ! Rockets ffs !

The 'peace' demands made by Israel were disclaimered so ludicrously that not even a crony like Abbas could accept them, and deliberately so I should add. I don't believe them to be genuine and are entertained simply to provide cover for Israel’s takeover of the territories it wishes to control as well as sparing the United States embarrassment at the United Nations.

If we didn't have Iron Dome, we'd be counting a whole lot of bodies by now. Maybe my own, who knows.

38 palestinians killed and counting.

Why don't you just stop firing rockets if a.) you're anyway unable to kill any Jews and b.) in return you only get pounded by the IDF? Is that not even an option for you? I don't understand the logic.

I don't think he's firing the rockets.
