Israeli - Palestinian Conflict

Pretty dangerous for Israeli scientists to get there, unfortunately, as it is while visiting any Arab/Muslim country.

It's going to be 'fun' for the next few years. Looking at the more right winged than ever Likud party list selected tonight. Unless Bibi shows some balls, the next government will be a total disaster.

You can see in this thread, as well as others if you do a CE search, that it doesn't matter which government is elected in Israel. It's pretty clear that the core issue is the existence of our state and not its borders. If it was the latter I'd bet you the Likud list would look different.

BTW, Begin Jr. is hardly a leftie and he's out...I'd have said don't let the press fool you, but then you belong to that mob. :p

France says it will vote in favour of Palestinian bid for non-state UN membership.

I'm not quite sure what the end game here is...what do the Palestinians get out of this? A voice in the UN? What's that worth

Hardly a surprise - France votes yes, the UK abstains, the US vetoes. Its been the same everytime, and it wont be any different this time round.

They're approaching the GA because whenever they try and go through the SC (which would grant full statehood if passed, rather than this "semi-statehood" that the GA gives) the US vetoes them.

It's not the left or right I'm worried about. It's the democracy. Forget the question of the peace process or settlements, there have been some worrying trends in the last Knesset and it's not going to go away. There are people there who aren't settling on using their numerical advantage to push through the decisions they want, which is obviously fine. They also want to stifle those who oppose, who is not.

Actually that's not true. The last time they went for it they realised they wouldn't get the required 8 votes from the permanent and non permanent members that would have forced the veto so it never even got vetoed on.

Shame on you for bringing up facts to ruin a wonderful story. Enjoy your Taibeh tonight!

Forgive and correct me if I'm wrong, it was a while ago now, but I thought that the reason they didn't get the required 8 votes was because the US was so successful in placing pressure on both permanent and non-permanent members to vote against or at the very least abstain? Such that they didn't have to take the uncomfortable position of vetoing such a resolution at the same time they were supposed to be in favour of Arab self-determination elsewhere?

The resolution is passed 138-9 with 41 abstentions. Palestine acquires non-member observer status at the UN General Assembly.

Why is Susan Rice barking so loudly? It's as if someone has done something against America's wishes and poor America doesn't like it.

Glad that there was an overwhelming majority that supported the resolution, although its probably a symbolic achievement for Palestine and doesn't really change much on the ground.

Yeah I figured as much.

I can see why Susan Rice looks so vexed, must be pretty humiliating having the entire world vote against you only for the international powerhouses such as Palau and Nauru to stand by you.

Though I fear Obama will interpret this as a personal insult, thereby destroying any hope of him pushing a more impartial angle this time round.

besides canada and czr, the other 5 use USD as their official currency and the last four have very close ties to the us...i.e. the us provides for defense etc.

I wonder if the countries who voted against it or abstained were all members of the 'coalition of the willing' aka US's bitches

The answer is yes. Microscopic US bitches.

On the plus side the US might have to start giving a hoot about Global warming, otherwise their UN buddies Palau, Nauru and Micronesia will probably be under water in the not so distant future.

Brilliant news, even if there's still work to do it must give hope to the Palestinians after a rough few weeks. And it is seriously embarrassing for Netanyahu and his cronies, now that they are 'condemning' the voice of pretty much everyone in the world except them - as if they have that authority.

Hope the Palestinians are happy with their 'win' because Israel just declared it'll put up 3000 new homes in occupied east Jerusalem & the WB

Some win

If Obama supported this then he can kiss goodbye to immigration reform, climate change legislation, filibuster reform and the GOP agreeing to anything else he wants for the next 4 years.

Yeah it's so hilarious that Israel can ignore the U.N and continue to intentionally feck with the lives of the Palestinians :D :D

Those idiots think that just because most of the world supports them, they somehow believe they have rights!! OMG idiots :lol::lol:

Typical though of the situation isn't it. Both sides have long ignored the UN when it suited them.
