ISIS in Iraq and Syria

YPG have started evacuating the city of Hasakah and are moving troops to the front.

There are also reports of YPG attempting a siege on Qamislo airport which is in the hands of the SAA. If the YPG can capture the airport then that would mean Assad no longer has any control over the province and it would all be in Kurdish hands.

Assyrian militias have also pledged support for the YPG against the regime.

Feck me. That would make one hell of an historic comeback. Better run for our lives.

the SAA pisses me off. They've done some pretty fecked up shit. I hope they get annihilated, give ISIS their own territory and the kurds can have their own.

I assume you've got a decent supply of hashish ?

You can't give ISIS territory.

In theory I'd be alright with letting them have some land so they and their followers could go about their business. Shame about the whole "worldwide Islamic caliphate is a must" thing.

Would be nice, dedicate a bit of land to them, a bit somewhere else to white supremacists, let fundie Christians have Micronesia or something.

Yep, drop all the extremists on islands without airports or harbours and let the rest of the world live together in peace.

The first Peshmerga, part of the third deployment, has lost his life in Kobane in the fight against ISIS.

They already have their own territory and we've seen how that's worked out.

Why is the thread title Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in Iraq and Syria?

They do but its not officially there's. People are trying to take parts of it back and will eventually reclaim all of it. It wasn't a serious comment anyway, even if it would be nice it were possible.

One is an official ally of the west and another a useful proxy at some times against regional enemies.

You may want to complement your grievences with the West with insights concerning the criminal justice system in them regional enemies of the West.

Have Isis actually lost ground since November or so? Since the US airstrikes in Kobani started I've only really heard of them losing ground rather than gaining any.
They've lost a lot of ground around Mosul. Peshmerga have cut off supply points to Syria, taking many small towns in recent days. There have been successful operations to take Shingal and Jalawla too. Unsure from an Iraqi army POV though.

what would be your thoughts on the West sending troops in? My instinctive reaction is that it would just serve to radicalise more Sunnis but you obviously know a lot more about this than me. I saw a quote from a Peshmerga commander that the US could totally clear Kobani in a week with minimal troops supporting the YPG.

Troops aren't needed on the ground. The Peshmerga and YPG are more than capable as a fighting force, if they were armed properly. Instead of sending in troops to support the YPG, aid them with coordinated airstrikes and give them heavy weaponry.

I'm not sure for Iraq though. There are already some American boots on the ground but they're called "advisers". Troops shouldn't be needed as Mosul could be attacked in the coming weeks, and if Mosul goes then ISIS should be finished in Iraq.

Also Kobane is near complete liberation, any day now...

Who's potentially gonna attack Mosul? First I've heard of this so I apologise for my ignorance.

Peshmerga have surrounded it from three sides, are cutting off supply routes and preventing any reinforcements to and from Mosul. They are tightening the noose on the city and awaiting the Iraqi army. Once the Iraqi army advance towards Mosul, they will be the main force in the attack with the Peshmerga and Shia militias providing indirect artillery or support etc. They'll deal with any fighters that run but not enter the city as a main fighting force. That's the idea that seems to be the one most people believe will happen.

That looks like it'll play nicely into ISIS's sectarian propaganda - Shia and Kurds besieging the city.

The sensible Sunni tribes need to get their shit together and join in on this offensive.

Theyre just sitting around getting fat. Theyre being constantly bombed but all were hearing are lies and false stories.

There are pictures of isis holding football tournaments. We dont need these silly unverified news reports in this thread.

It's actually true, and they were most probably killed because they were watching Iraq's game, which means that their loyalty is still with Iraq, not the "Barbaric State in Iraq and Levant".

And today there were also clashes in Tikrit after Iraq's win because some celebrated the win.

Peshmerga artillery hitting Mosul city, bet ISIS are crapping their pants.

So nations such as Turkey and Qatar are invited to this conference yet the Kurds, who've essentially been the main fighting force against ISIS in Iraq get snubbed.

Some 'anti-ISIS coalition' this is.
Mate the WUM is so obvious.

Meanwhile, Boris is in Kurdistan. Loving the Kurdistan badge he has. He went to increase trade between here and Kurdistan, as well as visiting British troops aiding the Peshmerga and the Peshmerga themselves.
