Is that it, though? Is everything they do aimed at attracting interest from the tiny minority of people who would commit despicable acts on another human being, without feeling any remorse?
Only that would really be incredibly niche. I guess it's reassuring, if so. My worry is that there's a broader appeal here, perhaps to hundreds or even thousands of people. I'd like to understand who they are and how they came to think about life in that way.
I think everybody would worry about that if they pondered it long enough. I have to believe that people who willingly do this stuff are unhinged in some way, otherwise it's a bit too scary to accept.
I'd like to know who in their right mind would seek out these images/videos and be spurred on to go and join them?
Unless you believe that "radicalised Muslims" think it's acceptable to commit atrocities in the name of their faith and record themselves beheading people for tv?
I don't understand why the media show it. They could just report that an American journalist has been captured and killed and leave it at that. Instead, they show still images and/or parts of the video and we have it all over the news, speculating about the guy's British accent etc. It makes them the focus of all the 24 hour news coverage and gives them more publicity. Publicity which might contribute to more Westerners going over to fight for them.
