Is the European super league back? | United Statement: We remain committed to UEFA

Glad it’s crumbling before it was even built. Even more glad we had the good sense to get out early this time round.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are still fecked financially so this is a matter of survival for them. If they'd had the foresight to realise that short term greed would only feck them over in the long run then La Liga as a whole might be in a similar financial position to the PL right now.

The rest of European football now has to come to their aid and join their new scheme to keep them afloat. They can feck off!

How long before they do the same to this new league and they go cap onto hand to the Saudi's or anyone else with the money to bring in teams that have been created overnight.

I fear it would come to a point where teams would play weakened teams in the PL for this and for that reason I’m out

Justified fear because that is 100% what would happen. Especially if a PL team in Star is in danger of getting relegated to Gold (god I hate the names of these divisions. Am I watching football or collecting flight mileage points?)

Real Madrid belongs to its fans (I.e. completely independent) and is financially stable. How many PL teams can say the same?

All the 'fans aren't interested' is a bunch of empty threats. Same as the 'I'll boycot the WC in Qatar!' nonsense.

End of the day, people will want to watch football. There is a lot of talk about the ESL being dead without [X] teams, that goes the other way around as well. Real, Barca, Italian teams etc. not being in the CL will essentially also kill that competition.

And again: corporate world follows the money. No way Glazers, Boehly etc. are going to skip a huge cash injection. Not expecting it to be a smooth ride but this seems to eventually replace the CL.

Press release from the LFP:

Following the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the Professional Football League reaffirms its strong attachment to UEFA competitions. The principles of meritocracy which govern European football constitute fundamental elements.

“The Professional Football League unequivocally supports the competitions organized by UEFA. Nothing can replace the legitimacy, credibility and prestige of European competitions as they have been organized for more than 60 years now.

We are very attached to the principles of sporting merit which must govern the organization of our sport: whether in the context of qualifications for European competitions, but also more generally to the principles of promotions/relegations. If football is today the biggest sport on the planet, it is precisely because it was able to create the foundations for simple, clear and transparent competitions.

Nothing can go against this intangible principle which is to be able to give everyone the right to “dream” and to be able to reach the top of the sporting pyramid.

The French sticking to their guns.

On one hand, european super league potentially undermines domestic leagues but on the other hand, the super league brings former powerhouses with history like Milan back and undermines the oil clubs. It’s not as black and white everyone is making it out to be. UEFA is no better.

Finally @adexkola might get what he wants. A closed franchise model - maybe we'll even have a draft

First of all good sir, I see nothing about me seizing power or Agnelli/Perez/Laporta being fired out of cannons into the sun so this is DOA for me

Seriously though, not much appealing about this super league idea. Everyone at that level is missing the point that a lot of the attractiveness of football is in scarcity. I can barely keep up with the amount of games as is, plus I'm getting older. Why would I want to see Real Madrid vs United 4 times in some glossy subpar derivative of the NBA?

Real Madrid/Barca fans in delusion shocker. The Champions League is an integral part of Uniteds history from the Munich Disaster and the Busby Babes to the Treble in 99. The fans would burn Old Trafford down if they tried to pull this off again after the last time. Well done to the club for coming out early against this.

How?

Talk is cheap. For the clubs and associations vocally opposing this, let's revisit this in a year and check if their stances have changed. If they have a chance to make more money and enough clubs back this such that joining does not make you a pariah, they will jump on this. Call me cynical.

Probably nothing for the time being honestly. I said it in the past but an actual SuperLeague would have to come at the expense of domestic football. You can't just add a 20/30 games competition to the calendar, the CL going from 13 to 15/17 is already pissing players off
That’s one of the reasons I’ve argued against it. I would take no enjoyment out of playing the same teams year in year out, without at least the local club feeling that you get from playing in your own leagues.
To me this is about the biggest clubs trying to get as much money out of a new competition. I have no sympathy for them.

What’s going to change in a year? This needed to make a big splash and you can’t do it again second time around.

I have no interest in a competition where the underlying reason for its existence is so that Real and Barca can find avenues to make themselves the richest clubs around again. Anyone who thinks that this is being done for any reason other than that are idiots.
Exactly. Throw Juve in as a founding team as well, it tells a picture of the true priorities

Agreed, even United's brief statement reflects that feeling: "Our position has not changed", you have to chuckle a bit since it took them a couple of hours to change their opinion and pull out of the ESL last time, followed by an emphasis on how we'll keep working with UEFA for the betterment (= more money) of the game. We don't want to look like the bad guys in this story, so let's see how the new CL format plays out and revisit the whole thing in a couple of years.

Because it essentially breaks the football pyramid and just throws in a few sides with football heritage into one competition. That's not what football is about, they're turning it into some overly commercialised bollocks which won't be accepted by fans irrespective of how uefa and fifa are.

The ESL massively intefers with League games, and the PL is our bread and butter. Unless they find a way to create a Super League without watering down domestic leagues it wouldn't work.

The new CL format isn’t much better, and the new competition is going to be revised into more of a traditional format. Not to mention it’ll be governed by the clubs to an extent that will prevent the shit that UEFA and FIFA are up to, which has more or less brought us to this point. Not to mention the fact that English clubs are pretty much excluded at this point anyway since Brexit.

First and foremost it's interesting in the sense that it could potentially threaten the stranglehold of UEFA and FIFA.

How is it good news? You can't seriously be in favour of this shite are you?

UEFA and FIFA are a disease upon football. Needs to be put down.

No one is disputing that, but this is completely worse, anyone with a crumb of sense should be able to see that.

It’s bad news for United. Whilst this remains a possibility the glazers will dig in and not leave. No United fan should support this!

Absolutely. If (and imo, when) the winds start to change, they will all pivot. They have simply learned from last time and want to get out in front of potential outrage and disruptive protests before there is truly something ironclad in place and it becomes generally acceptable.

I don’t mind the ESL idea, but Florentino F up when he decided to make the announcement. He only made sure he got universal backlash.

Now, I think it’s a good alternative to UEFA and FIFA regulated competitions. I hate the hypocrisy from these federations when they are corrupt to the core and also only care in making more money. Problem is that not everyone is on the same boat. The Premier League is the best league in the world at every stage: football, economic, marketing, etc. Why would they leave their seat for an universally panned idea? It has no meaning for them and Florentino’s approach to PL teams should had been much more discrete. He F up.

The rest of leagues depend a lot in the Presidents of their federations. Back in 2020 they had a well positioned ECA President and Juventus CFO Andrea Agnelli, whom in a few years lost all his power and ultimately his support meant nothing. The President of the Spanish Federation - Javier Tebas - is inept, corrupt, attention-seeker bloat and ardient enemy of Real Madrid and Barça whom should have had a strategy to be onboarded. This did not and will not ever happen.

Conclusion, ESL is Fd. But I laugh at fans repeating like goats that “Football is for the fans” or that they hate they only think about money or want to boycott Qatar WC and few minutes later you see them jump king of joy when an Oil Country buys their club, their federations have corrupt leadership or are OK with ticket pricing. Let’s leave things as they are bcs UEFA and FIFA are surely the best option and way to go.

Exactly. There’s huge history there.
