Is the European super league back? | United Statement: We remain committed to UEFA

Seeing as nothing is being done with state ownership and football is fecked anyway I'd say bring this on. Chaos is a ladder.

This is a lot more palatable and intriguing than the first version. Potentially raising up historically great teams from the past and enabling them to invest and compete sounds exciting.

I was totally against it the first time it rolled round, but honestly, UEFA and the PL have had their chance to deal with the plagues on the game and they haven’t done enough.

Time is running out by the looks of things.

Im guessing if we had a time machine, people might have had similar views to the Prem or the change in the CL format.....where you dont have to be a 'champion' to be in it!!!!

How exactly? I can’t figure out how this would help the likes of St Etienne, Hamburg etc.

Those clubs are completely delusional. On the massive off chance this takes off, all that’ll happen is the ESL will soon start accepting entries from the highest bidder. Aka Saudi Arabia.
Anyone pining for this would do well to remember this idea wouldn’t be regulated and it would be a free for all. Wonder how Italian and Spanish clubs fans will feel when they start having to have away days to Al Nassr and the like.

What’s also mad in all of this. You’ve got managers and players on a constant whinge about the amount of games being played and then you have uefa, fifa and the super league basically in a world of their own fighting tooth and nail to get more and more and more and more games .
I am 99% sure that within five years football will be all year round at the highest level. With pre season scrapped.

1. I assume it's not possible to both play CL football and this? There's not enough time.

2. What, in essence, is the actual difference between this and the CL? Surely it can't be an actual league right? There's not enough time for that either. It has to be a knockout tournament.

It's about getting rid of the middle man and deciding who gets which piece of the pie on their own. Nothing more, nothing less.

those little rats knew this was in the pipeline they bloody knew hence why the value now and potentially in a few years time. I cannot explain my hatred for these rodents

As Van Gaal once said, we go for it. The new Champions League format is terrible anyway and feck UEFA.

One good thing is the matches wiil air live for free so no need to pay £33 per month for TNT Sports.

They have also said their will be a women's competition which would include 32 clubs across two leagues.

I just want to see Ceferin and Tebas mad . I don't know if this is the solution but they can feck FIFA and UEFA both.

On one hand, feck UEFA and FIFA with their blatant corruption and their ever further bloating tournaments. They have no love for the sport, they just want to fill their coffers.

On the other hand, feck the ESL, with a shovel, turned sideways. The entire idea behind it from its inception was to enable clubs with insane, selfdestructive business models banking on ridiculous maintained growth rates to keep continuing their nonsense for longer and to cement their position as unassailable top spots in their leagues by giving them a financial edge that clubs in their league who aren't in the ESL just have no hope competing with. And the very last thing the sport needs is an even more congested fixture list, even more travel and even more unequal wealth distribution in the national leagues.

For one season yes. Then they'll introduce the subscription model

PSG and Bayern refused to join the SL from the off so that’s a bad start for these grand plans
That’s why you said etc after those teams, there’s nobody else and that’s how it’s hidden
Oh yeah, of course we're talking in hypotheticals here. There is no superleague right now, nor anytime soon I'd imagine

But in theory a tournament including madrid, barcelona, bayern, the big italian clubs, the big english clubs, etc? Of course it would be absurdly profitable

Well those teams are basically dead as it stands, and an ESL would allow them to hold onto players that little bit longer and invest in their facilities and allow them to attract better players.

It’s not like we are competing with a great system as is. The PL have allowed their own league to be dominated by a side playing without financial rules or restrictions for over a decade and they have done absolutely nothing about it.

We are arguing about what could happen to the game, when it was already lost a long time ago. Who cares about Al Nassr participating when Newcastle already exist?

It doesn’t matter anymore.

I like the idea and it's better than current UEFA competitions.

English clubs won't be allowed to join obviously, however, would we really want to play in a CL without spanish and italian clubs? Because I'm pretty sure that they won't rest until it happens. This will make the CL useless. And what stops other clubs in Germany and France from joining? The premier league and the FA should be open to the idea.

Man City watching on knowing if anything happens to them. They can try to persuade (bribe) the government to allow them into this

I don't want the ESL but I do want competition to FIFA, UEFA and EPL as they have monopolised the game to their own ends.

Genuinely conflicted over this. Could the ESL be worse than City cheating their way to almost every EPL title for the foreseeable future?

Indeed. A lot of talk about English teams not being in the ESL, but who would want to watch the UCL without the big European clubs. Waste of time and money will be lost.

This is going to happen isn't it...UEFA's presser in an hour will be intesting

I don't see how HMG can stop it. They'll just register Man City offshore in Cayman Islands and say they "rent" the stadium. Therefore not a British club anymore (true anyway as they are effectively the UAE National Team).

The game is mostly fecked so it cant do much harm. FIFA, UEFA and the FA have done a shitty job of maintaining the game.

If the English clubs want to join they'll join

This is all I heard aswell "free to get everyone on board then once we have them, boom, billions in streaming revenue".

I'm guessing they will go for a hybrid model like other stream providers have.

Free tier = Ads
Paid tier = Ad-free

And prolly some Paid+ tier with like 4k and 5 streams etc.

It's so wild to see that the 'pulling up the ladder once you're at the top' mentality is so strong. Football has always been a pyramid, if you take a sledgehammer to the foundation it won't help the sport as a whole. It will ruin it.

feck the ESL.

The premier league and FA currently are blocking English clubs from joining. But European clubs after the current ruling can do what they want, which means if I understood correctly that even within the same league each club will be able to choose where to play. If PSG says they want to stay in the current competition, nothing will stop Lyon from saying that doesn't work for me, I'm joining the other one.

That's how I see it, eliminate the competition (UEFA) and once it's all settled, it'll soon become a paid subscription. Apart from Red Star Belgrade vs Dinamo Zagreb at 4am on a Sunday in Dubai.

It'll go the way of Netflix and DAZN, as soon as they have the subscriber base in place, they'll creep up the prices, which will inflate each season. There's billions being pumped into this, they'll want a return eventually.

Any attempt to block the English clubs from joining will be met with legal action from both the clubs and the ESL with the likely outcome of that being a coyrt ruling that the attempt to block them joining is unlawful, any government involvement is also illegal under FIFA rules.

Star League
Gold League
Blue league...

Thank God I got to see some of the best football and entertainment in my lifetime.
Who makes this shit up?

All clubs need each other. It goes both ways.

That really doesn't tell us much.

Football needs a revamp . There's so much disparity between clubs. FIFA and UEFA are corrupt too.

But I just don't know if this ESL thing is the answer. It's led by Real Madrid and Barca. Perez and Laporta. Also dodgy elitist corrupt. Not the right men to fix football. Not sure we can trust them. They mostly care about the best interest of their clubs.

The top clubs don't care about the others even now, why would they start caring once the ESL is formed and there's 64 teams in it.

No surprise really. You don’t go through with an idea like that unless you’re 100 % sure the law is in your favor. It was the fan backlash that throw the project down the toilet, not any of the empty threats from UEFA/FIFA.
Yep.

Greed and money always wins in football

And yes, obviously the Glazers knew about this. And yes, it means they’re never leaving
