Internationals September (World Cup Qualifiers)

What a hard start for him.
Didn't say it was. The results so far are better than losing to North Macedonia though.
The first task at hand for Flick is reestablishing confidence and a feelig of team spirit and joy of the game. Winning the games everybody (rightfully) expects Germany to win is a good start for that.

Sommer is the only reason Switzerland isn't losing 4-0

Really poor performance by Switzerland here, getting lucky with GK saves.

They're not ineligible though. The federations decide who's eligible or not. The country decides who they let in.
I was going to ask about this... are they really ineligible in football terms?
They were in fault in civil/law/goverment terms, but they didn't do anything wrong related to football... I am not sure how that works

Could no one at either club say “well you wouldn’t be able to play anyway under Brazil’s Covid rules so sit back down”?

Don't think anyone had a clue they'd be issues of letting players in actual countries. The agreement was anyway they'd play the first two and then miss Bolivia on Thursday (so they only miss the first prem match back rather than 3 from 10 day quarantine) and then Scaloni said he was going to play them in all three games.

Just trusted Argentina knew all the rules and regulations and obviously their FA is still operating at amateur hour (and Brazil medical authorities wanted worldwide attention of stopping key match to make their own point).

I don’t get it. These aren’t average people where you aren’t sure what they’ve been up to. These are international footballers.

If the authorities were serious about knowing if they came from the UK or not, considering that’s where they are employed, they just need to check the LiveScore website or some equivalent and see that they were in England recently.

Sommer truly defies the odds as a midget keeper. Unusual.

Easily one of most underrated keepers in europe. Is he on some ridiculous contract at 'Gladbach as you'd think Dortmund would've looked at him at some point in last 5 years given the mediocre options they have in goal.

That's what I thought. But apparently it was checked later to ease the arrival, but I'm not sure about that.
And despite it being talked about on social media two days ago, not one immigration/airport person said “I recognise some of these people. Hang on a sec! He plays for Villa and he plays for Spurs! They’re teams in the Premier League, I’ve seen it on telly. And the Premier League is played in Britain, which is on our banned/quarantine list?,

And now I come to think about it, those moustaches look fake and this guys passport has been written on in crayon!”

He hasn't been as good for Gladbach as he has for Switzerland, his Market value reflects that.

Let's ask @prateik
He seems to known all the eligibility clauses of the relevant FAs

I'm pretty sure players who arent allowed to be in the country would be ineligible to play the match

Point me to the clause in their FA's rules that says a player is ineligible to play if he's not allowed to be in the country. You're "pretty sure" right?

If I was apportioning blame, trust me, Argentinian authorities would be at the top (closely followed by the Brazilian immigration/airport authorities who are apparently headed up by a Messr Closeau)

but these players are paid (a lot) by the clubs and surely the clubs keep an eye on where they’re going, especially with Covid still an issue and especially when said players are going to S America and triple especially when they’re going to Brazil, a country whose leader said you can beat off Covid by exercise? They pay their wages, it’d have taken two minutes to google Brazil’s Covid rules? The PL clubs got together to say no to international player release .. it’s been all over the news for days!

Just told my wife (Villa fan). Not a happy bunny :) …. quite a few swear words were said, mostly beginning with F and either side of “Martinez”

Exactly why I can fully believe CONMEBOL might have done it
If CONMEBOL really gave any assurance as the press here is saying, I hope they face some consequences too

CONMEBOL released a statement a few minutes ago, that this would be decided by FIFA, in that case, I expect Brazil being given the points because of Argentina WO (regardles of the player situation, the match ended with Argentina leaving)
Exactly why Brazil kept training in the pitch. Brilliant. Haha

I'm amazed Hulk is still being called up.
Mostly because Brazil had 9 players blocked and Hulk is doing great in Brazil.
Crazy that more than 6 years ago he was deemed not good enough and now was unanimous. Haha

True. Still would have rather watched a football match though……

Not at all, this is just pure incompetence from brazilian and argentinian authorities, the kinda incompetence that still drag those two countries back in other aspects outside Football, especially Argentina.

If Switzerland wins their two remaining matches they will top the group, can't believe Italy hasn't secured their qualification yet.

Imagine Italy not qualifying for WC after winning the Euro...

Yes I am.. I am surprised you seem to be thick enough to think a player who isnt allowed to be in the country would be eligible to get on the pitch and play a match.

Italy are crazy good.

I wonder if Mancini lands himself a top club job after this.

Would there be any reason to, until things start going south? He has a comfortable job in his home country where he’s doing a pretty solid job. They have a good chance at the World Cup next year too. I imagine he’ll stay on until the results start going against him.

He’s comfortably the best manager in international football. The only one who really comes close is Luis Enrique.

Whether a rule says he eligible or not, if he can’t go into the country where the game is, he can’t play?

Such convincing rhetoric...

That's some incredible foresight from the people that write the handbooks.
It's also an unnecessary clause, as they'd most likely wouldn't be allowed into the country as part of the visiting team.

Hypothetical speaking, because I'm assuming that clause doesn't exist, until you point me to it.

Whether a rule says he eligible or not, if he can’t go into the country where the game is, he can’t play?

I was specifically talking about eligibility.

Pretty much.. there wont be anything specifically about Covid and quarantines.. but if the player cant be in the country legally, he surely cant be playing. And Argentina cant even feign ignorance.. it was made clear to them that the players had to leave the country.

Sweetie, I think we can all agree on that.

They're not ineligible from the FAs perspective though, and that's not going to be the official reason for a forfeited loss, because it's technically untrue.

I love Sommer. But as crazy as it might sound for you guys who probably only see him in big games for Switzerland, there is a reason why he's still at Gladbach.

I think he's a big game player and always rises with the occasion. Sensational for Switzerland and rightfully adored in here. But for Gladbach during a whole season he's a bit inconsistent with howlers every once and again.
