ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

This has been superb from Afghanistan, played the game amazingly well so far.

Perfectly paced and haven't needed to take any risks whatsoever
Good point, played nearly the entire game with the confidence and composure of a big team.

Oddly, England go bottom but this is a great result for them

Jonathan Trott and Ajay Jadeja is not the coach combination you expect to have for Afghanistan

What a fantastic world cup for them

Even the shocks have been one sided

A decent result for England but i'm still wallowing in no hopeville at the moment.

Afghanistan with a classic no nonsense chase. That was so mature run chase. Absolutely incredible. Well done Afghanistan. Plus England at the bottom below the Dutch team

Thought Bagar’s captaincy was horrible but feck me are Pakistan’s spinners shocking

First World Cup I can remember in a long time where Pakistan's bowling line up has not been better than its batting. Usually pulls us out the fire in games like this. And both the batting and bowling have been far below average. Major rethink in terms of selection and captaincy needed after this I think.

Who would you make captain? Azam, Rizwan and Afridi are the onl Pakistani players that are genuinely good enough to not have their positions under threat in the near future.

Really poor from Pakistan.

Shaheen hasn’t been the same since returning from injury.

Haris has been awful - really dire form right now.

We lack a world class spinner - this is a team that’s had Abdul Qadri, Mushie, Saqlain, Ajmal, and Afridi…at a pretty continuous thread, and we’re struggling without that top top spinner. I was hoping Shadab could fulfil that role but he’s looking very low confidence. Still young though. Abrar Ahmed has looked good in our test side so it could be worthwhile to give him a go in white ball.

Imam needs to be dropped - we’re way too passive in our power play which is why we struggle to get bigger scores as it’s too reliant on our middle order. I’d like to see Fakhar and Shafique open the batting for a while.

Have been saying it for years but Babar is way too passive as captain - the game just drifts him by. He needs to be much more aggressive when we’re bowling. I think white ball captaincy should be with Rizwan personally.

Babar's captaincy has been pretty awful. Hasan Ali was generating some reverse swing and he changes him and brings a spinner who is out of form. They needed wickets and he was bowling Shadab. Words lost on what to say on that.

Even Babar the batter this WC has been underwhelming. Yes he scored some 50 and all but neither of his 50s were match winning knock. Had he accelerated in the middle, Pak could have scored 300 plus. Overall, a poor stuff from him today.

I agree on the captaincy bit - I've had the same criticisms of him in tests as well, but I don't see a viable alternative to lead the test team. He's genuinely a world class batsman, but his captaincy is really poor. And it's weird as you'd expect someone with his intelligence in the game to manipulate a game to his advantage. He also seems to have a blind spot about our openers and how we maximise the power play. We're way too passive, and need players at accelerating in that first power play. I'd like to see Shafique and Fakhar open the innings for a run of matches.

On the second point - he's definitely been underwhelming, but it's meant that others have stepped up. Much of my criticism of this team has been we've been too reliant on Babar, so I'm glad there's others to carry some of the burden, but yes, having a underwhelming series overall (also, he was fantastic in the 2019 World Cup so he's already got a good world cup tournament under his belt).

The weight of captaincy is effecting Babar. He looks mostly clueless on the pitch as a captain and on batting he looks more nervous than he's ever looked.

Demoting him from captaincy will be the best thing for us and him from a being perspective. Rizwan is the best captain now given his numerous successes at domestic level but I know the PCB will pick Shaheen because he's the darling of the country, like Babar was, and has a couple of PSL wins. While I'm sure we'll play aggressively, he can also be brainless. Would much rather prefer Rizwan.

I was never convinced he was a good captain. He looks clueless as feck most of the time. Displays no conviction in his decisions and falls back to Rizwan and few others to make a decision for him. Him giving overs to Shadab and Usuma today at a crucial stage in the end when Shaheen and Hasan were available was downright laughable especially when there was a hint of reverse swing.

Yea he's never been a good captain at any format, it's been known for a while but just ignored to avoid any disruption in the team and because technically we were performing well in white ball cricket; getting to the semi final and final of the t20 WC.

I think he would be ok for test as he can pace the innings without worrying about run rate. I feel for his capability he can do much more in ODI. Having rizwan or someone else should be ok.

I really like Babar the batter and hence I will call his performance underwhelming. It was his WC and I feel this will be missed opportunity for him.

Babar is an awful captain in all formats. Simply clueless tactically and lacks basic common sense.

Pakistan's spin department is tragic. Not long ago you had the likes of Afridi, Ajmal and Hafeez choking the life out of opponents. They regularly defended terrible scores on pitches like this one. Today you had Afghans playing 4 (!) spinners all comfortably better than any Pak spinner.

Dreadful post.
Okay i guess. Not everyone can be satisfied and your requirements for what constitutes a “team player” are bit weird anyway. Kohli was one shot away from equalling the record and he was in that position because he played brilliantly till that point to make the outcome a formality. I am sure he doesn’t care what someone will think about going for his hundred after that.

No player will put his individual performances over his team victory. Its a scenario that you have invented in your own head. Its not new that some fans find weird things to get upset about even when things are going well.

It's really tough to choose, I think Rizwan could be a good option though and he has proven to be very level headed throughout this tournament. But honestly we are lacking leaders and it's showing in the performances. No committee's for struggling bowlers, no one bollocking the fielders for their insane decisions and only Rizwan in the middle coaching his teammates through the game. The team is very young and there are players waiting in the wings who are also young. I just hope they don't waste the talent coming through.
