ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

They will.. By far the best team right now.

England and Aus have been very disappointing.

Aus are just a bit shit.

England came in complacent. Should be a far better side than they are. Maybe Stokes can save it.

So much noise over nothing. Apart from kettleborough acting like a clown it was no big deal.

Yes, realistically I can only see New Zeeland and possibly South Africa beating India right now in this World Cup, but I certainly wouldn’t bet on it. In batting, bowling and even fielding I think India are the best side, certainly in these conditions. But New Zeeland and maybe South Africa have the batting & bowling to beat anyone anywhere on their day, so I’m not handing the title to India just yet. India are just a great side full of brilliant cricketers.

I've just seen the Clip of the umpire not giving a blatant wide so Kohli can get the ton??

What on earth?
Yea the umpire playing up to the occasion is pretty pathetic as well.

Yeh not fussed on the not running singles thing - that's for Indian fans to debate over. But a neutral umpire doing that in a World Cup is pathetic?

Indian fans on social media have gone full RAWK over Kettlebot in recent years. He was the umpire every time they were eliminated from ICC events since 2014. That streak ended last year when he (being English) couldn't officiate that semi exit.

Can sort of understand why he bottled that decision and didn't want to face the wrath of Indian fans if Kohli missed out on a century.

If there's some truth in that then it's even worse. He's paid to ignore all context other than the rules.

I agree but unconsciously the past is always with you.

We see it every time United get a decision. There's a massive media storm and all the refs spend the following month shafting us just to come across as 'unbiased'.

Really? People annoyed about the King getting his century because the umpire didn't give a possible wide?!!
It wasn't a wide anyhow, and the fans got to see what they wanted, job done with no harm created.

It was a wide but had it been given even then situation would have been still the same , but I do have issue with refusing the singles for the milestone not due to NRR but because of the mindset it represents it may not look a big deal right now but in a knock out game a batter prioritising their personal milestones could lead to slowing down and halting the momentum at the wrong time allowing opposition window to get back into the game when you are on top .

It wasn't a wide for me, Kohli moved his body and made the ball look slightly further down the leg side then it was.

I get what you're saying regards the net run rate, but India are in a comfortable position and need not bother themselves with that, plus we're going to win that game easily, had India needed another 30/40 runs to win there's no way Kohli would have played like that.

Nothing to do with Kohli or his hundred. Umpires ignoring calls due to a game situation is a sackable offence TBH - will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.

I am not fussed about NRR thing at all its irrelevant for India as things stand My issue is more about the mindset of some of the Indian players specifically while approaching Mile Stones I have seen them suddenly completely slowdown and innings momentum is kind of halted and then these Batters getting out immediately without running up the score and suddenly you find yourself 20-30 runs short in the end which could prove decisive.

Team should always take priority over personal milestones .

Do you think saying something untrue over and over again will make it true? By rules it could be called a legal ball as rules have been changed specifically to address exactly what kohli or someother batsmen would do to get it called a wide.

Is this thread really going to argue that isn't given as a wide 99/100?

The rules specifically allow the umpire to not give that as a wide. They changed the rules to stop batsmen from doing this exact shit. Batsmen cannot move and then pretend a ball was too our of reach and ask for a wide and it's not an argument that's just facts.

I read the article - that's a real stretch,i've seen those given as wides consistently since 2022 and they will continue to be.

Anyway I'm boring myself now - point made, I thought it was pretty farcical.

That said, that's probably enough for the umpire to explain it away and nothing further to be made of it.

Some great games coming up now. Surprised the bookies have Australia as pretty big favourites v Pakistan, i'd have it much more 50/50.

The WC winner odds have shifted heavily in favour of India - feels a bit excessive to me.

I am thinking of going to Pakistan v Afghanistan. It's in Chennai, I have the day off. Haven't found anyone willing to come with me but might just take ab

Don’t be daft. If it had glanced just past leg stump it wouldn’t have been a wide as per the rules you’re quoting. This one was a wide all day long even in his natural stance.

It's a combination of India starting pretty flawlessly and the other big hitters looking very meh. New Zealand being the second best side so far isn't going to swing the odds much.

On your second paragraph - how much is a ticket for a group game like that?

Thanks for your offer of advice/help if I made it for the tournament. Logistics meant I passed through Delhi on my way to SE Asia to early to make it worthwhile staying for it.

10-15 GBP for decent seats square of the wicket, 50 GBP for good ones(behind bowler/wicket keeper), 200 GBP for the box ones. No one pays for the box ones because that's all corporate stuff. A very big percentage of tickets are reserved for sponsors/politicians/etc.

Would be pretty similar prices all over India - may be cheaper in some of the cities, and more expensive in a couple more.

It's not "cheap" by the average Indian standards, say, 80% of the city would feel like that's a lot of money. But 20% of the Indian population is still a huge number because the population is so big, so there's definitely a market for this.

IPL matches cost 2x this and it's impossible to get tickets.

It wasn't a wide, Kohli moved his body and it's then down to the umpire to make a decision one way or another, it certainly wasn't a blatant wide.

Anyhow, the crowd wanted to see a Kohli ton and that they got, so for me the right call was made and nothing wrong with that in my opinion.
Created a brilliant end to a great knock.

Who do England want to win here or is it to early for picking games

Shaheen has become such a toothless bowler up front. Only decent at the death nowadays.

He's clearly not 100%, we've rushed him back from injury and he hasn't been the same since. Doesn't bowl over 90mph now.

I'm not particularly tribal with Cricket unless it's Australia. That said, can't say I care much - I'll just side with them losing...

That's a very similar breakdown percentage wise to Cricket pricing in the UK and affordability. Interesting.
