ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

Also, I dont understand why the match has to be overs curtailed when you have a reserve day? Why cant you just continue playing full match till closing time today and resume tomorrow?

At the end of the day it's a one day international and you want to complete it in one day if possible.

Probably lots of logistics reasons we won't have visibility into.

Spectators at the ground would probably prefer a finish today.

Over ensuring 50 overs for both teams?? I guess possibly this is the reason because ICC will have to admit DL is broken otherwise

What logistics when you already have a reserve day bar spectators? Doesnt equality take precedence over spectators?

That was in the group matches. Now you actually have a reserve day. So why should overs be culled at all?

Say at the end of the day, India needs 20 runs from 5 overs, it wouldn't be worth to play the game tomorrow and get the whole ground staff et al to organise it.

During the 1999 world cup our match against England got rained out and had to be completed on the reserve day. Don't think any overs were curtailed then.
Yeah because it was fully rained out. What we could see today is a farcical scenario where india could get to bat 20 overs when we have an entire spare day where both teams could complete full quota.

No arguments. I'd prefer a fresh start as well.

Eh? Not sure why chasing team wouldn't have 10 wickets in hand if they haven't faced a ball.

Scoring at 7 with 10 wickets in hand vs 5 an over with 10 wickets in hand.
i'm saying they do have 10 wickets in hand. with less overs and a reduced target to chase.

having 10 wickets in hand in 30 overs is a massive advantage over 10 wickets in 50 overs, hence the run rate required is weighted in favour of the side batting first.
Plus New Zealand didn't get the chance to accelerate in the last 4 overs. They had 5 wickets in hand could have gone at 10-15 an over in the last 4.

Nah... Pretty sure that part of the game was played on the scheduled day and then continued on the next day due to rains.

I am not sure NZ would like a 20 over game either.
40 overs - 223 would be a decent score for NZ to defend.

Especially when an economic bowler is bowling 3 of the last 5 overs.
That's on Kohli. It was already raining by 40 over mark. Should have bowled Bumrah and Bhuvi instead of finishing off Chahal or Hardik. I know it's a risk but better risk those two getting hit for more at the end than wasting overs of your main bowlers.

Yes 20 over game will suit India esp given our batting line up. 40 over would completely tilt in their favor. I think DLS is mostly fine but that 40 over target is completely crazy.

Too big a risk. Chahal was already wasteful and having him bowl at death would be a big disadvantage...if it hadn't rained or rained this long.

The whole 'batting team would bat differently / more aggressive if the knew it was 40 overs, and thus have a higher RR' is flawed, when the bowling team still has better bowlers to come and are saving them for the final overs.
The bowlers left need to be somehow taken into consideration.

If it was 100% guaranteed to rain, NZ would probably have less runs on the board with Bhuvi and esp. Bumrah having bowled their 10.

At same time, I wanna say DL is trash, but I really cant come up with anything better. There might be something out there of course.

The assumption isn't that team would bat differently in the remaining overs but that they would have accelerated earlier in a shortened game and thus could have scored more depending upon how many wickets they had in hand.

Yeah, but if the innings is curtailed, those bowlers shouldnt be getting 10 overs to bowl..
That gives India an advantage..

NZ's best bowlers would get 8 over in a 40 over match.

If NZ knew it was a 40 over match from the beginning, they would have played differently as well.

There are arguments for both sides..

D/L is weird. No one understands it completely.. and I dont think anyone is a huge fan.. but until someone comes up with a better solution, we are stuck with it.. I'm sure people have been trying .. this is all we have.

And what if the reserve day is rained out as well? First priority has to be to get enough overs in for a result.

Looks like we have an update (kind of): We understand that if the match fails to start by 1835 local time (for a 20-over game) then it will be deferred to tomorrow. And for that to happen the rain has to ideally stop by 1730.

Anyone know a good rain dance?

5pm More bad news from Old Trafford:" And rain has picked up," says Sambit. "And that could be that." As we'd mentioned earlier the forecast isn't promising for tomorrow either.

Looks like it worked..

It'll rain tomorrow as well..

India go through in that case because of finishing above NZ in group stage.

Think its in the afternoon, NZ and India innings should be done by then....Hopefully.

As per met UK, it will not rain at all tomorrow. Only very little chance of a rain spell around 4 PM by which match should be done. BBC says the same. Met pretty much got today's forecast spot on so hopefully they are correct about tomorrow too.

If no overs are going to be bowled today why can't we just continue the play from where we have left off today.

IIRC a Super over will also be tried before the match is completely abandoned. If that fails then India will go through
