ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

The next challenge is how to build your self up for other series. Do some of the players still have the hunger? This is where the players will be found out. The next coach has a massive job on his hand.

Applies to the fans as well in a sense.

Wankhede cant be expanded. Its on marine drive.
I dont think they'll even get permission to raise the stands
Its a great ground tho.

That's one thing that crossed my mind right after I wrote out my post.

Mumbai has literally no space. So there must be logistical issues.

IPL starts in a few days, doesn't it? Too much cricket will take its toll

True. I think we may have a tough year coming up in terms of motivation but after that we will continue to go from strength to strength IMO.

Right now it's about fecking enjoying this!

Wohooo!!

Damn there's IPL in 7 days. Pricks at BCCI!

They had all the space they needed when they were building the DY Patil stadium and it still has a capacity of 55k. That can be expanded tho, if need be.
Eden Gardens is an exception.

The squad should be in England after a few weeks of recuperation to equip them selves with conditions. I'm sure BCCI can find a way to compensate players so they wouldn't have to play in that circus.

It's typical BCCI. It's all about the money.

7 days after winning a world cup how can you make these guys play an IPL noone actually gives a shit about. In fact noone ever gives a shit about the IPL. It's a money spinner but noone really cares about it one bit. These guys have created history. They should get some time off and then get ready for some proper cricket in England as you say in 20 days or mores time.

This

Even if they decided to expand It's also practically impossible to move homes and businesses from around the stadium with existing laws and numerous human rights groups camped in Mumbai - it would probably take decades to go through countless/pointless processes in the courts.

Problem is there is only a massive demand of tickets in India to fill up the stadiums when there is a big match otherwise these stadiums are enough to cater to the demand for normal matches.

Plus BCCI did not ala FA pull down existing stadiums and start building from scratch. The capacities in all the stadium came down as well as they were converted to all seaters and adhered to other ICC guidelines regarding spacing etc.

I do not see BCCI having the motivation to build newer stadiums which can house 60k+, simply because unlike football clubs the date receipts are a drop in ocean for BCCI. They get majority of the revenue from Broadcasting rights and sponsorships.

I thought I would personally and I did.

It was simply perfection.

Yessssssss!! :D

Man, I wanted to point out how pessimistic you were throughout the tournament. I was afraid of saying we'd win it for fear of jinxing it. Now that we've won the thing, I can happily say you're one pessimistic feck :D

I started believing after the loss to SA that we could do it. Innings break yesterday was when I thought we couldn't. After Gambhir and Kohli started playing, I had a feeling we'd be in business. Seen them do it before.

Anyway, moving on..

A little bit of background for those who don't know -- guy in the pic with Sachin is a lichi farmer who cycles all around India to watch Sachin play. He threatened to commit suicide if he wasn't given tickets for every match. Since then, Sachin's been giving him tickets for every match. Every year, he gives Sachin 365 lichis or some number like that during the time of harvesting.

According to Cricinfo, it seems Sachin came out and called him up into the dressing room, hugged him and handed him the trophy.

Just so typically classy of Sachin. Great man.

I actually do that with every big game, whether it's United or India. I like to play it down in my mind, it helps me cope better. It's a psychological thing I do when I'm not actually in control of the events. Call it reverse psychology or lowering expectations but it works for me :D

And I was just going to post that picture believe it or not!

What a great story. What a great man. What a great. I'm proud to have been a part of the 'Sachin Generation'.

Sudhir Choudhary isnt it..
posted a few pics here
The pic with Kumble is class as well.. as is the pic of Sachin with his kids(who are a lot older than I thought they would be)

Sachin Tendulkar walked out of the changing room and gestured to Sudhir Gautam to come up. Gautam is the thin man with the shaven head - for the past few weeks adorned with a replica of the World Cup - and body covered in the Indian tri-colour. For at least half a decade now, Gautam has been Tendulkar's biggest fan, waving the Indian flag and blowing his conch shell at every venue Tendulkar plays. Today, Tendulkar decided to repay Gautam for his devotion.

No sooner had he realised that Tendulkar was calling, than Gautam jumped the electronic advertising hoarding and skipped up the 30-odd stairs on to the corridor of the Indian changing room. All through his short journey he screamed in delight. Tendulkar shook hands with him, then embraced him and finally asked one of his team-mates to get the World Cup trophy. Zaheer Khan brought the cup outside with utmost care and held it tight. Gautam almost snatched it out of his hands but Zaheer held on. Eventually Zaheer let go and Gautam lifted the Cup with both hands, screaming "India". Tendulkar could not help but smile; he started clapping and was joined by a few of his team-mates. The sweat on Tendulkar's face glistened under the floodlights, enhancing his joy of winning the World Cup .

It was a day when the common man felt he was part of something special, when the gap between fan and superstar was bridged, with Gautam becoming the envy of fellow fans as he freely slipped in and out of the most sought after place in India, the team's dressing room.

He is just a class human being(Sachin that is). Just hope this WC Victory doesn't accelerate his retirement decision :(

I hope he retires from ODIs and prolongs his test career. There's nothing left to play for in ODIs. Going out on the high of a WC win would be fanastic. The next cup is 4 years away, and more importantly, in Australia. BCCI should think ahead and start giving chances to youngsters and allow them to bed in. Unfortunately, BCCI are a bunch of spastics and we're more likely to see more IPL games than any forethought going into retaining the cup.

We'll be trying to retain the cup. Because we won the fecking thing. God damn.

Nice video. Dhoni's follow through

I just saved about 80 pictures from CRICINFO's galleries. For those who want to savour this moment, go there, download these pictures and keep them forever.

This picture really makes me smile. Lets not forget the men without whom this was not possible. Another absolute legend of not only Indian cricket, but world cricket - Anil Kumble. And one of those warriors who are one of the reasons why we are always warriors on the pitch today. I love Sachin's enthusiasm in Kumble holding the trophy as well.

Somehow, I can't bring myself to save the pics with Kohli, Yuvraj, Sreesanth and a few others..

Seems like mental illness.

Can you zip the pic folder and upload it somwhere?

You have to feel for the likes of Dilshan, Sangakarra, Jayawardene. Third ICC WC final they've lost in 4 years. 2007 WC, 2009 T20 WC and now this.

Somehow, I can't bring myself to save the pics with Kohli, Yuvraj, Sreesanth and a few others..

What's wrong with Kohli? Super talent and come across as level headed as well.

Yuvraj has surely changed everyone's minds. He's a different person today and has grown incredibly over the course of this world cup. The 'I'm the fecking man' celebrations are replaced with genuine happiness and excitement. Whether it's a one off or not he was brilliant this world cup and seemed to show a lot maturity IMO.

Besides, you're not actually supposed to love the personality of every player in the team. Rooney is the kind of person I would never want to know, Ronaldo seems to think he's a fecking God and there are so many other examples at United. In the end the team/nation/club is what matters.

Yuvraj got the Man of the series but I thought Zaheer was our best player throughout.

In order of importance I would rate them as..

Zaheer, Yuvraj, Sachin, Gambhir, Dhoni (just for the innings in the final!), Sehwag, Kohli, Bhajji, Raina, Ashwin, Munaf, Nehra, Chawla, Yusuf, Sreesanth

Zaheer got smacked around a bit in the last two games though. Those last 5 overs in the final could have cost the team. I think Yuvraj deserved it. Lets not forget he was a live wire on the field as well.

More or less right. I would have Raina and Ashwin above Harbhajan purely in terms of performance, but Harbhajan took some key wickets. Dilshan yesterday and Akmal against Pakistan. I think we could well have gone out if not for that ball to Umar Akmal.

Raina's innings against Australia was priceless, as were the 30 odd runs he scored against Pakistan. Raina was the difference between a collapse and a competitive target.

Would have Munaf higher too. Bowled well in the semis and the finals.

Not sure about that. Zaheer's taken a fair beating at times, and I think a lot of his damage has come with the old ball which for me less important than doing it up top (apart from the final where he did brilliantly with the new ball only to ruin it by getting thrashed with the old one). Also while he did really well with the old ball I don't think he contained with it the way a Malinga would.

All in all Zaheer did really well. But I think the figures are slightly misleading.

I will save my thoughts for another day, not when we've just won the WC. :)

Okey Dokey.

But I will say that chill man, you get all sorts in a team. The dressing room would be a tad boring if it just had gentleman like Sachin. This team has created history and become world champions. And really, it does take all types.

Have I mentioned Munaf's rags to riches story?

-lived in a shack with his parents in a village, and slept occasionally outside due to lack of space. Still lives in the same village having built a new house.

-played bare footed until he was 15 - until someone I know from the UK purchased trainers for him whilst visiting India.

-was refused a proposal with a girl he wanted to marry because he was deemed too poor - ended up marrying the same simple childhood sweetheart despite having a choice of millions.

-Sachin invited him to Mumbai when he first saw him play in Baroda in a local game.

Wow, respect.

Puts all the mocking some of us do into perspective.

(slaps himself on the head)

Are you speaking from experience?

Because I keep hearing about ex players raving about the Indian stadiums, in particular the facilities. People like Tom Moody (I think) have been stunned apparently by the level of facilities in particular for the players and staff which are extremely generous.

But I do think 33K for a country where cricket is religion and a city which is the financial hub of the nation and has produced some of our greatest cricketers has a stadium with such a small capacity. I was quite surprised when I heard that it would be only so much.

From an architectural point of view. Most of your stadia aren't fully cantilever for example...let alone aesthetically pleasing. I don't need to visit the Taj Mahal or Hagia Sofia to know they're stunning pieces of architecture.

What? So he was 'too poor' for her, got rich, then went back and bought her heart? Yeah, that sounds like a marriage built on love and respect.

Alright, I thought you meant more in terms facilities and experience etc
