How do we sell Harry Maguire?

DIslike him on and off the pitch (he's just so uninspiring). England fans booing him is dumb and is more like preemptive knee-jerking. All in all, very stupid.

He's good enough at the international level and if he's not, the fault lies with Ole Gunner Southgate.

cus he is a fraud and everyone knows it. Imagine if he actually was good, would that happen then? Feel sad for him as a person, but it is what it is. He could just do the talking with his feets, but have not

That’s just complete nonsense. The type of shit you read on twitter after every United related post on the type of shit that you hear from Mark Goldbridge. It’s just a false narrative. The truth is that since Maguire signed for us he’s been our best defender, by a long way. He’s had a poor season this year, in a poor team, but even then, there are signs that he’s improving. He’s been much better since the end of February, but because the narrative has already been set, people don’t see this.

It’s constant online bullying, is what it is.

That's fair enough! I guess I'd argue any potential fee would be intertwined with Maguire's salary demands - with the latter likely having a major impact on the former. If we're considering it in a vacuum though I would not quibble with your valuation.

Appreciate the chat mate - I'm off to bed but was a pleasure having this back and forth! Happy to discuss further on the morrow though :)

Appreciate it too pal, anything that forces me to remember the likes of Palace spending almost 30m on Sakho is always fun.

Booing your own players is silly and counterproductive. I don’t think Southgate is going to let the crowd pick his teams for him, and he should know they can be a pretty erratic and excitable bunch.

Couldn't care less about players being booed. I mean, it's just booing... It's literally the most inoffensive and passive form of expressing disapproval that's possible in a football stadium.

Well said. He’s been terrible for us this season, doesn’t deserve to be playing. I’d boo him at OT if his performance warranted it.

Fine in a 5 for England though. Maybe England fans have higher standards than us these days.

He's been shockingly shit and did the whole ear cupping nonsense last time out for England after scoring a goal. Of course some fans were going to give it back, it's not like he kicked on from that *amazing goal against Albania is it?

This. Dont think the booing had anything related to his Utd form. It's not like there are only Utd fans on the stands. I think his ear cupping crap had soured a lot of fans opinions on him. Plus all the talking in the media

What does this even mean?
Unfortunately he has found himself in a situation similar to Phil Jones back then. Booed and turned into memes. I reckon most PL teams supporters find him dislikable (which also happen to be England fans) and see him as a joke now. Why did they do it in a live match? I dont know, usually online criticisms seem to be enough to ease their hatred.

I agree about the Phil Jones/meme stuff, I said similar in an earlier post. I don’t understand the theory that he’s dislikable off the field though. You’re right though, he’s been turned into a ‘joke’ by the online ‘fans’ and the football twitter pages

At this stage the agenda against him is just getting weird. I can recall Maguire letting England down once (Denmark in a fairly meaningless Nations League game where he was sent off). Other than that, he's always been one of England's best performers since Southgate has been in charge.

I guess you could perhaps understand United fans booing him after a poor season (even though I'd still call someone a weirdo for booing a player for poor form) but England just makes not sense.

Hope he can regain the form from last season (where he was in the Euros and Premier League team of the tournament) but the more this drags on the more I can't see it - don't think he's the strongest mentally - which he does deserve criticism for given he's club captain.

I didnt mean dislikable off the pitch only, I mean generally its just how most fans see him right now, he is not their likable chap anymore. Unlike 3 years ago. Its just how it is, sometimes a player can do no wrong in the eyes of fans and sometimes a player can do everything wrong by simply being on the pitch or existing. Its always been there so Im not shocked that he was booed. Sterling was performing really well at some point but the fans still disliked him for things unrelated to football.

Shows how far the club has fallen.

Agreed. I wasn’t insinuating that you’d called him dislikable off the pitch by the way, was referring to another post further up. Apologies for not making that clear

Shows how far the club has fallen.

Yep. Certainly some truth to that. Yet Bailly and Lindelof don’t get half the criticism that Maguire gets. Of course, the £80m price tag is going to way heavy and he will always be judged harsher because of that, but that’s not his fault, is it.

Well looks like the toxicity from United fans have spilled over to England. Even England fans have jumped on the massive online Anti-Maguire bandwagon

They have every right to boo him or aim it towards Gareth for his selection of Maguire, he should be nowhere near that squad this season. Tomori has been by far the best English defender this season.

No problem, I realized my original post was confusing as I was trying to be sarcastic towards England fans. I never get national team supporters that like or dislike certain players. They play for your country

He's also club captain and Bailly and Lindelof aren't.

They booed him cause he's an easy target and he plays for Man Utd. He has been very poor this season and I think being captain is the kind of pressure he doesn't need right now.

I don't quite understand England fans booing him. He's been quite good for the national team. United fans have more reasons to be displeased with his performances this season.

I was at the game last night, the boos weren't too loud, was quite mixed; not sure how it came across on the TV though. Thought the boos were louder when they announced the team-sheet before the game and when more fans came in there was less booing. He was getting a fair bit of stick every time he touched the ball though.

Social media does play a big part in all this though, he has become a bit of a meme player, which is why I always believed time out of the first team would help.

Good, hope many more boo him on Saturday. I'll be happy to comply should the fans in my section follow suit.

Doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the first team.

Southgate clearly only rates and cares about PL players though. Tomori being arguably the best defender in Italy this year for the likely champions means nothing when you've got Tyrone Mings, Marc Guehi and Conor Coady doing bits for midtable English sides...

It's why Sancho could barely get a sniff despite being one of the best playmakers in Europe for Dortmund.

I think the United factor has a lot to do with it but I don't think he's done himself much justice with other PL fans over the years. He's been poor this season and doesn't come off as particularly likeable so he's become a hated player in England.

As a United player though you don't even have to be poor to be hated tbf, just look at Bruno and Ronaldo. Just adds to hate factor for rivals fanbases

Hope all those who have jumped on his back realise now they have been diddled by the press agenda and social media trolls

Disgraceful to see tonight, shows what a targeted media smearing can do.

Not at all. All the match going fans I know we're well ahead of the media in realising how bad he is. If anything the media gave him the usual special treatment overating him for being English until he got so bad they couldn't cover for him any more.

Hope the United and Leicester fans come together this Saturday to boo him in unison.

Thats some utter bullcrap. Tell me when has he improved. What has he done? In what game? Specify?
It’s not a false narrative it’s the damn truth. He has been our worst defender given how many chances he’s been given. He should be shown the bench and rightly so.

The complete nonsense is acting like he hasn’t given away ridiculous goals as far back as Project Restart, the Spurs, Bournemouth & Southampton games seem to have gone from peoples memories along with multiple shocking performances last season.

He ain’t the worst CB but he’s far from the best, absolute nonsense to say he’s suddenly lost form this season. His United career has been patchy at best.

Embarrassing how both United and England fans have treated him. Wouldn’t happen with any other international team. Is it any wonder why all the other home nations always want to see England fail. Embarrassing!

You’d think fans would know better after Phil Jones speaking out but they never learn. One day all this abuse is going to cause a player to commit suicide. Nothing wrong with constructive criticism but nowadays it seems more like an agenda.

I don't think you will ever find a scenario that severe . These players are multi millionaire's who could quit football or take a transfer abroad if they're not happy. I suspect most would take the abuse from the fans for the huge sums of money they are making if they are unable to earn similar elsewhere.

I am totally against it, but bottom line is we are going to have to sell him. He has become the scapegoat and a meme. Our fans look for reasons to blame him for any goal we concede and they seem to think that he set his price and named himself as captain.

But mark my words, when he gets sold and starts playing well (most likely for Newcastle) our fans are going to say "well why didn't he play like that for us?". I've got news for you. He has been playing well for us. He's just been the scapegoat.

Sure, he's had some poor games (Liverpool, Watford and City come to mind) but for the most part, he's been decent. But the fans have turned on him and look for reason to hate him even more. In fact, for Harry to get a 6/10 rating he has to put in a 8/10 performance while Varane will get 7/10 for putting in a 5/10 display. It's how it is, and I don't see any way back from it.

You guys want Varane and Lindelof starting even though in the month of January when Maguire only played one game De Gea had to make more saves than any other keeper in the league and was named player of the month. Oh, other than one game. Against West ham. In that game De Gea only had to make one save. It also just so happens to be the only game Maguire started that month. And the other games where Maguire didn't play and De Gea had to bail us out, guess who we were playing? City? Liverpool? Chelsea? Nope. Wolves, Brentford and Villa. But go on...tell me how much better we are without Maguire...

He’s like the family member you always have to apologise for.

Bring on Saturday. Missed the EPL.

He is absolutely correct. United fans have grown such a hate for him that they look for the bad, and when you constantly look for it, you will find it. But after a poor patch (Liverpool, City and Watford come to mind) for the most part he's been good. He's just been scapegoated. Athletico is a perfect example. Both their goals have been blamed on him by many and that's an absolute joke.
