Horse racing tips

The POW was run at a very steady pace and The Fugue went past a number of horses in the straight. Oftentimes when that happens the horse in question is beating tired horses who were either pace setters or pace chasers of a fast pace. This wasn't the case here and she has her optimum conditions today.

Also, looks like the weather is going to be great!:)

I know. I was expecting to go in shorts in T-shirt but the bloke taking us (it's a corporate shindig but with a load of other journos I've known for years) just sent me this about the dress code:(

Premier Enclosure
Customers are advised that smart dress is required in the Premier Enclosure and Hospitality areas. Jackets, ties and hats are positively encouraged.

Please note that blue jeans, t-shirts, sports attire (including trainers), unduly casual or extreme attire are not permitted. Anyone wearing such items will be asked to move to other enclosures, where more casual dress is accepted by the majority.

 we're in averageville, so I can wear what I like :)

Wish I was, no fecker should have to wear a suit in this heat, plus you can lay on the grass
:(

York card looks trappy and I'm wary of favs there, for what it's worth:

1.50 Royal Mezvan - too short to back at 4/6 but should win
2.25 Rosdhu Queen (nap) - good bet at 9/4
2.55 Innocently - often back top weight in early nurseries since handicapper hasn't much to go on but this top weight looks anchored by 9-7
3.30 Nanton
4.05 Demora
4.40 Size
5.10 Majestic Moon (backing jockey Lee Topliss basically)

Am hearing dream wild e/w in the 1.40 at newmarket. Just visited the Stoute yard. fecking cool set up.

Majestic Moon in the Get Out Stakes rescued those tips. 1/3 pt down on a tough-looking card at levels (or 1 pt away since I'd have watched the 1st race). Rosdhu Queen blew her race at the start, the silly moo.

July Stakes tomorrow, I remember when it wasn't just an event for in-and-out sprinters but classic horses like Thatch won it

Well I had a good day and didn't lose all my betting budget so that was a bonus.
I did wonder why Roshdu Queens jockey was doing nothing as they passed me at the furlong marker. Obviously knew she'd shot her bolt.
Weather was cracking. I would definitely go again.

Glad you had a good day. Newmarket was great too. Visiting Sir Michael Stoute's yard was pretty special. Will post a couple of pics later when I am on the laptop.

Please do

Kind of wish I had taken more pics of the facilities but it felt a bit dodgy.

This is Estimate, the queen's Ascot Gold Cup winner. They reckon he might go and race in Ireland a bit, but not until September or so.

This is Telescope who is close to a return. It was pretty clear the yard was gutted he got injured just before the Derby.

You can kind of see the stables behind him where the building juts out to the right. They had about 70-odd horses on that site. They have rows and rows of stables. They have a kind of mini-track they warm up on and an indoor one for winter. They even have a 15ft deep swimming pool for injured horses. It has a retractable drawbridge, Bond villain style. The Stoutes have another yard over the road where his ex-wife lives. Newmarket as a town in mental, it is just pure horses.

Godolphin are down the road and Lady Cecil too. Saw the Jockey Club building etc...Apparently they do the main training on the heath, timing the horses to find their optimal distances etc...

Yeah they are both very elegant looking beasts. They put him out for a couple of hours a day to get some sun and to graze and move the pen you see around. They are clearly really fond of him there.

My son's off to Sandown tonight for racing and Happy Mondays. I tried to mark his card with the idea of stopping him from losing his shirt (wouldn't really want to bet on these):

5.50 Lutine Charlie each way @12/1 - you're really backing jockey Robert Tart
6.20 Classic Colori - only 4 runners so short price (maybe one to just watch)
6.55 Tornesel 5/1 - can be backed ew
7.30 Lizzie Tudor 10/1 ew
8.00 Willow Beck 7/2 - get on early may shorten up
8.35 Sunblazer 5/1

I like Tilstarr in that 8.00 race at Sandown, Pete, with Robert Tart on board (finished 2nd at 50/1 the last time they teamed up). The only concern is that it's taking on the extra furlong tonight for the first time but has been running on well over 1m the last few efforts, which suggests the step up in trip could be suited. I think the 22/1 on offer is very generous for a horse that has consistent figures the last six races (2-13224), and with the talented Tart taking off his 5lb, it could offer serious each-way value.

Nice winner, Pete. Willow Beck wins with an SP of 11/8 (You were bang on with your 7/2 not lasting long!) and Tilstarr takes third with place odds of 11/2.

We'll have the beatings of this game yet, Pete.

They must have had a major punt on Tilstarr to get it down to 11/2, great value if you managed to get it 16s or better. Boy managed to win about £5 on the night and would have done a bit better if I'd got my dual forecast Colori/Brae Hill over a bit earlier. Plenty beers have been had.

Good night was had so, I take it, Pete? The races are a brilliant evening out, as long as you gamble within your means and don't take it too seriously. Other people in your company have to enjoy their night out as well so I find betting sensibly to keep losses manageable - and thus your good humour - is the way to go.

Nah mate, Tilstarr went to post at 16/1. I got 22s earlier in the evening, which when placed paid out 11/2. Not too bad I suppose.

Well he's not home yet. Nice place bet @ 11/2 - your form book analysis is often spot on. I may take a day or two at York in a few weeks for the Ebor meeting.

Galway is a graveyard if you apply any normal racing logic! Speed figures etc. Not a fecking hope with that place! V Odd and tough track especially in heavy ground. Next few days should be interesting.

Goodwood is another track that catches a lot of horses out. Some week of racing all the same.....

Sad to hear of Colm Murray's passing there during the week. An genuine racing fanatic. RIP

I swear to God that we lost some horses below in those dips in Galway yesterday. Horses in contention and then BAM!, they've lost ten places. It's a trappy track and yesterday's inclement weather made it even worse. JP's stunt with Carlingford Lough was typical, too. First reserve available at 8/1, low and behold he gets the nod and is smashed into 7/2 favourite at the off and cruises home. JP had a 1,2,3 in the Plate. Unreal.

The way some of the jockeys are approaching the stretch at Goodwood is bewildering. Many jockeys are taking their horses out of the race completely positioning them on the rail behind horses. They're hoping for gaps to appear which never come, or that only open for a spilt second before slamming shut. Hughes proved himself among the best in the business yesterday. Two masterclasses on Toronado and Toormore when he came up the centre of the track from off the pace. Judged to perfection.

The older I get Im still learning about track dynamics. It means so much. There has been races this week where you could literally rule out 60% of the field.

I had Hughes first yesterday and another 16/1 winner but only back them to get a place. typical!

If it keeps raining in Galway Ill be back front running 3 milers in everyrace!!!

Hughes is exceptional and the man to follow around Goodwood. He's on Cumani's horse Ajmany in the first today. Cumani has had 6 winners from his last 10 runners so the yard is in scorching form. It's also Cumani's first runner of the meeting so it'll be interesting to see how it goes. I have a feeling the 8/1 won't last long.

In that opener at Goodwood, I also like Mushaakis from the Johnston stable, another yard which is in red-hot form of late. The horse is ultra consistent (look at its figures this season to date - 321321) and is the pick of Paul Hanagan for this race. Johnston has a very good Goodwood record and had the winner in the opener yesterday too. Conditions look set to suit and could offer value at 9/1.

As well as that the ground nearer the centre looks better than up the rail

I always tend to avoid races where the trainer has two fancied runners.

Something worth looking at as they start nurseries is the handicapper undervaluing the top weight - they have few races to go on and difficulty in matching form lines. M'selle went in the other night at Ffos Las under 9-7.

I backed Sheikhzayedroad in the first at Goodwood. I know the horse is a tricky ride, but why, oh why do the jockeys insist on running down the inside rail behind horses? The horse may have won - or gone very close - but the gaps never appeared for him, or if they did, they slam shut instantaneously.

It's fecking baffling as much as infuriating.

I like Tawhid in the 2.30 at Goodwood. His form ties in closely with the favourite (Montiridge) when he was 2 lengths behind it last time out at Ascot despite carrying 3lbs extra and being badly drawn. There's a 5lbs swing in the weights in favour of Tawhid this time around and the going is a little softer than at Ascot, which will suit. Considering Montiridge is 10/11, I think Tawhid at 13/2 offers good value.

Every race at Goodwood seems to follow the same pattern - the winner comes late and off the rail.
