Yeah, compared to my visits to Aintree and Sandown this past Jumps season yesterday was a bit shit. Newmarket has crap facilities in comparison and you see virtually feck all of the action.
Today I'm involved in What a Name. I have a soft spot for fillies who have form with colts and backed her at 14s a few months ago for the 1000. Confident.
Dawn Approach was impressive yesterday but isn't as stoutly bred as his Derby winning sire and is ridiculously short for Epsom. The Fabre trained Ocovango is a far more worthwhile proposition at double figure prices.

Chester starts today and I have found a bet in the Chester Cup at 2.45. Olympiad is a a rather unexposed animal who won a handicap over two miles at the Ebor meeting most comfortably before running no sort of race in the Cesareawich at Newmarket. He's not actually bred to stay two miles and that race at headquarters probably stretched his reserves of stamina too much. Two miles two furlongs is however a lot more gettable at a tight turning track like Chester and in the hands of a master trainer he's a very solid bet at 12/1. The only negative, and it is a big one, is his draw in stall 17. It'll be tough to win from there so he has to be an each way bet.
Not a fan of Chester at all. I thought it was quite interesting when I did a bit of research into to the different tracks, Chester and Epsom were my worst betting wise and Nottingham, Wolverhampton and the Curragh my best.
Going to Chester on Friday, so tip away.

I picked the winner of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. Won me a few bucks. Thought yiou all would like to know.
I won with an EW bet on Salford Red Devil. The omens are good for this special day.
Over 5f it's very difficult to win from a high draw (7 and up). Of course, Quattuor won from 8 in the opener but that's because he was a lot, lot better than the opposition and broke fast. Today looks like favs in the first 4 out of 5 to me:
1.45 Gandalak
2.15 Contributer
2.45 Memphis Tennessee (Mount Athos has no form on soft)
3.20 (no bet - possible lay a wide draw if price not too high)
3.50 Personal Touch
4.25 (no bet - possible lay fav Arbeel if odds on, has no form on soft but dropped in class)
5.00 (no bet - too trappy - questions over stamina and/or ground for many)
AJ Cook was absolutely strangled at Beverley last time and should get it in done in the 6.40 at Hamilton tonight.
Some very impressive rides from Spencer today.
He did well today choosing the good ground on the outside of the track. Being brought up on Piggott, Eddery and Cauthen I'm not a fan of Spencer, Moore or Hughes. Best jump jockeys and worst flat jockeys in living memory, they tell me.
Hughesie is the best in the business. Different gravy.
Buick is my personal favourite on the flat. Top class
I love trying to dissect the Victoria Cup. Ultra competitive this year as always. I've parted my hard-earned on Jamesie, Tartiflette and Glen Moss, all each-way. I liked Highland Colari and Smarty Socks too but for various reasons left them out.
William is the only one around who I think will make up into a really great jockey. Does very little wrong on good rides and can make the difference on a 50/50.
Thank god I didn't see Petes tips.......I got Captain Bertie to win in the first, Mad Moose e/w, Dr Red Eye e/w and Red Runaway to win in the last.

Well done. I was right about favs... they just weren't the ones I thought they were going to be! The betting made me sit out the first two and then I decided it wasn't going to be my day and just watched. Haven't been to Chester in donkey's years - it was always great fun.
...imagine if you were betting on football following pete's tips?!?Oh, I don't know about that. Arsenal to win league at 15/2 in 2002, no bet 2003, win league at 4/1 2004. Every year since top 4 finish collected and league win hedged for a free bet (except catching a minor cold in 2010).

Very tough to call the Lockinge later at Newbury. Declaration of War has taken substantial money in the betting is in to 6/4 from 9/4 earlier. Farrh at 9/2 is one who appeals, though. Second in two Group 1s to Frankel and has won twice on seasonal debuts before. Sousa/bin Surror won the last race at Newbury too so that is a plus point for Farhh.
I fancy Trumpet Major to run a big race too. Hannon's horses are in fine form and this horse looked impressive whilst winning a Group 2 at Sandown a few weeks ago. The talented Richard Hughes in the saddle which makes the 14/1 great value and I think it will run a good race.

Farhh a cut above there. Unusual to see a Group 1 field being so strung out, plenty lengths between the eventual winner and those in the middle of the pack. Ultra impressive.

I had him at 11/1 as well. Always worth remembering betfair dont pay first past the post.

Got a few quid on Chopin at 20s - I don't see Dawn Approach staying and that makes him and Ocovango very good value.

My last effort at tipping a card on here was dismal. Epsom's always trappy, take a look at the course and C&D winners since a lot of horses simply don't act and in sprints front runners can get away and never be caught. I'll have a look tomorrow am.

Epsom was my first trip to the races (bunked off school) - first race a furious 5f sprint downhill. Second race backed Mill Reef to win Derby. Hooked.

My first was Windsor, then Cheltenham and Epsom- the atmosphere at the latter two got me interested, although I know very little about horse racing. The roar when they come towards the line is amazing.
Am going with the title sponsors again tomorrow and they have a massive
box that runs over the finishing line. Great balcony on it too.
Sounds good. Pretty tight odds apart from Making Eyes in that race.
