Horse racing tips

After all the effort wasted on the Grand National, I tossed a coin over this morning's newspaper to see which horse it landed on for Scottish Grand National.

The penny fell on Monsieur Cadou so that's where the rest of my money is going. To hell with form, common sense and probability.

Scottish national today, who's on what?

I'm steering clear of the favourites this time, except an e/w on Auroras Encore, has to be done. Although I think that would be 25/1 easily if it hadn't won the national.

Also a BIG e/w bet on Bradley, rested and hoping to show its true colours once again.

Tour des champs to win, big price hopefully wont fall over, the clumsy cnut.

The confusion over the ground at Ayr is an absolute farce, heavy on Thursday morning now apparently good to soft, good in places. Clerk of the course hasn't a fecking clue.

I think hes a good chance today... hard luck :smirk:

Never heard of a course change from heavy so quickly

I've narrowed my selections down to four for the Scottish National but I want to only back two so I'm going to wait a little and see how the going is before taking the plunge. At the moment I'm undecided on Monsieur Cadou, Neptune Equester, Captain Americo and Lively Baron. Obviously the former two are well fancied in the betting, but I also fancy the latter two to run decent races at large prices.

I've plumped for Model Pupil in the 1.50 at Newbury. The favourite was beaten by Model Pupil's stablemate last time out so that's something that can be taken from the form. Ryan Moore is in the saddle and he always does well at this time of year. Should be thereabouts.

1.50 Newbury Model Pupil 4/1

I looked at him but went with Guarantee, both ran terribly!!

Yeah, both flattered to deceive, Deco. I thought that the favourite was there to be taken on but I thought that MP and Guarantee would be the more likely ones to profit. The winner had never raced above Class 2 in the UK before so it really did come from nowhere, form-wise.

Haaf A Sixpence just ran a beauty at Newbury. In from 16s this morning into 10s so there's quite a few people are happy campers after that.

In the end I couldn't split them and I just stuck a few quid each-way on Monsieur Cadou, Neptune Equester and Lively Baron, and did a quid each-way on Captain Americo as I think he's value at 50/1.

Wow, that was woeful. I don't suppose I can expect much from a random bet but Monsieur Cadou was actually 2nd favourite going into the race and needn't have bothered to turn up.

Sweet Jesus. That was woeful on the betting front. Of the lads I had an interest in, all of them were basically out of the race with 10 fences left to jump.

Here's hoping the football accumulators come in!

Didn't have a bet at the weekend as Punchestown is just round the corner. Fancy Captain Chris big time for the big race on Wed. Just hope it won't be too soft.

BBC:

Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni’s yard found to have 11 of 45 horses tested positive anabolic steroids

You calling over to this side Nearco? I'd buy you a pint!

Afraid not. Couldn't get the time off, but Punchestown is on my to do list for sure.

Really nice card tomorrow and I have to go in on Boston Bob is the 6.40. His fall when looking the winner in the RSA was the worst moment of Cheltenham for me. He's the only one of these tomorrow you could possibly see running in the Gold Cup next year and I think 7/2 is fair. He's only had three runs so is relatively fresh.

I've had my worst ever run of betting recently so I have but one tip today.

Sprinter Sacre.

Times are bad.

Even he'll probably lose - and there's no psycho bookie offering evens on him today to make any difference if he wins.

I'd love to say that was incredible stuff from Sprinter Sacre but he walked it. Hey, a win's a win! Onwards and upwards with my £1.34 winnings!

Massive race today, a proper Gold Cup re-match sans Bob's Worth.

Sir Des Champ is the 2/1 fav but I can't have him at all given how hard a race he had at Cheltenham. He was also below his best at Punchestown last year.

First Lieutenant is a horse I love but coming here after two big runs at the Festival and Aintree is not ideal prep. Sprinter Sacre got away with it yesterday but he had a massive class advantage.

The price differential between Long Run and Captain Chris is still too big and the latter has massive claims of reversing King George form. He was outpaced on Boxing Day and had to use his reserves of stamina and class to get in contention and consequently had nowt left after the last. His form with Cue Card at Ascot is top notch and he won here after his Arkle victory. I've backed him each way at 10s and 8s.

Solwhit versus wonder mare Quevega today but with 10mm of rain hitting the track overnight I think Reve de Sivola might spoil the party. He loves it on the soft side and is a decent price at around 6/1.

I want to back Solwhit, a horse that has won me more money than most, but today doesn't feel right.

Right to have doubts about Solwhit yesterday, even though refunds were given.

But what of a Hurricane Fly and Pont Alexandre double today? 13/10 really worth it? My luck at the moment says not.

Impressive stuff from Ruby yesterday. Im sure you are aware of this already but attheraces.com do full replys for all the irish racing. Free to register as well.

Had that O'Grady winner yesterday, Acapulco. He has a couple of interesting runners today. Always wondered what happened his stable over the last few years, he always had some really high class horses when i was younger. Did he not get the same standard of horses coming through or what? Top trainer.

Oh well, Pont Alexandre is another non runner. Our Conor out tomorrow. They're making punters work hard this week.

Have you seen how the BHA are being criticised for almost acting too quickly? Yet if they'd sat on it for days if not weeks the same people would have called into question their inaction.

There may well be something bigger here but it's as if the tabloid culture of some reporters particularly those with a passing interest in the sport, are falling over themselves in the pursuit of a wider scandal.

One of my favourite days of the year tomorrow. 2000 Guineas days at headquarters and the Kentucky Derby in the evening.

I'm off to Newmarket. Never been before and am very excited. The 2000 Guineas looks a good renewal and the two market leaders Toronado and Dawn Approach both look very solid. Ante-Post I'm on Cristoforo Colombo who I had a little on at 40/1 back in October. He's 8s now and a good each way bet for all that he'll need to be better than his sire (who won this and who had a similar profile) to win.

I'm looking forward to the 2000 Guineas now. Two horse race on paper between Dawn Approach and Toronado and I'm siding with Bolger's here. Toronado has run the 1m at Newmarket on good-to-firm in a Guineas winning time before (going on winning times of the previous four renewals) but Dawn Approach has 2-3 lengths on him here I think. As for an each-way punt, Bolger's other horse Leitir Mor will surely try to ensure the race is run at a frantic pace to suit DA and I think he may well be able to finish in the places. At 66/1, I'm willing to have a few quid on him to find out.

I can't choose between Dawn Approach and Toronado so I'm not going to put my money on either. Looking forward to the race though.
