Gaming Horizon Forbidden West (PS4/PS5)

Nice plot twist off the rip...
Sylens... What a snake!

It’s very pretty but I’m disappointed there’s such a noticeable dip between performance and resolution. Feels like Ratchet handled it far better. Hopefully they have a patch soon.

Some of the pop in on SkillUps video was horrendous.

Says how amazing the game is otherwise though and doesn't see it as a big deal. Just whether it's worth waiting a month/few months for it to be sorted.

From what I’ve played so far it’s still so lovely looking and so smooth that I don’t think there’s any need to wait if you want to play it. But I haven’t gotten that far in.

I forgot how great the Cauldrons are.

I've barely touched the main story yet. The world feels a lot more fleshed out this time. So many little areas to explore.

They've clearly taken inspiration from the more popular open world games. The side missions feel a lot more fleshed out and have the Witcher 3 trick of making fetch missions seem more substantial.

I've only experienced one issue, where one of the KangrooBots got stuck in midair and I was able to shoot off all its components.

Fair enough, id choose performance everytime as well, but games are hardly unplayable at 30 fps.

They are for people that have experienced 60 and above. It's why I have a gaming laptop alongside my PS5 for older games that haven't been updated on consoles.. Playing a game at 1080p isn't an issue it's all about performance.

A few years ago I would've vehemently disagreed with this statement and called it ridiculous, but now having played so many games at 60fps, I have to agree. It's very difficult to go back. Especially when games give you the option of performance over fidelity. Playing a game at 60fps for an hour or so on performance, then switching to 30fps for fidelity, it's a different game. It feels like the game is broken. Which I know sounds hyperbolic, but it's true!

I remember doing it for Miles Morales. I played the whole game in performance, then switched to fidelity (or whatever it's called) just to see what it was like before I stopped playing it. Just...no. It was terrible.

I've played games in 4k and in 1080p, and yes - 4k is obviously nicer. But not so nice that it's worth taking a hit on performance. 1080p is absolutely fine.

Enjoying it so far, it is basically more of the same but I’ve hardly touched the story spent the majority of the time clearing the ? On the map

Really winds me up when you can see a mark on the map but it’s not reachable yet!

I like to see the map clear before I advance the story!

Wait till 144/120 becomes the norm and you have to go back to 60

the difference gets very minimal once you start pushing on from 120/144 to 240 but it’s night and day before them.

Resolution is irrelevant it’s all about Image quality and with the AI techniques in development a game running at 1080p can look very very close to native 4k

It’s great to see console players now demanding 60fps and choosing performance over just pure resolution.

I really really love the first game, played it mainly on pc which was awesome graphically. But im not sure to buy the ps4 version of the new game now. Does it look great and modern or better spend the money for a PS5? Buying a console just for 1 or 2 games at £850 (ps5 price here) seems like a stretch to me right now

It’s nice to play an open world game with so much colour that’s the first thing that comes to mind.

There’s definitely a Vaseline like blurryness to the image in the 60fps mode the implementation of the Upscaling technique is nowhere near as clean as Ratchet or spiderman was using

The sharpening issue or whatever it is that's causing foliage to shimmer is annoying me no end in this game. It's very apparent when you look at the particles rising off the red blight stuff.

I know guerrilla have posted a hot fix but it doesn't seem to have helped much for me.

Yeah, I've never had an issue with image quality when opting for performance mode, personally.

Again, years ago I would have waved away all the talk about 60fps. But it really is a game-changer. If a game ONLY runs in 30fps it wouldn't stop me from playing it. The point at which it becomes unplayable is when you have the option. Playing it in 60fps for an hour or so, then going to 30fps does make it seem like the game is broken. The difference is night and day.

I have a very powerful pc and have played plenty of stuff on 60 fps and above. I can still play a competitive game of Tekken on 30. I notice it, but I just don't care. Really. I don't :wenger:

Not saying it's not better but I just don't care that much about performance unless it's very inconsistent, that's obviously annoying. The thing is, your eyes can adjust back to 30 fps perfectly fine. At least mine can.

For those who have played both and can compare, which of this and Red Dead Redemption 2 is a more beautiful game?

If the difference is negligible either way, which is the better game?

I get you there. A locked 30fps is different to a game dropping below that which actually does make a game unplayable especially without something like VRR enabled. Even so though if I've the option to play at 4K 30 or 1080p 60 I'd go to my laptop every time to play the game over the PS5. Resolution really doesn't matter a while lot to me unless it's something like 720p or lower.

Games are always kinda boring for the first couple hours I find, once you're allowed freedom it's much better.

Unfortunately, that seems not to be the case here. I’m still bored. Poor lore and design choices. Terrible writing and characters. I can’t go more than a minute without some boring dumb looking character wanting to have a long drawn out conversation about nonsense. Looks stunning, game play is fun, everything else is horrible for me. Seems more and more games and spending a fortune on graphics, and giving the writing duties to whatever muppet with a laptop they meet in a coffee shop. I had the same issue with dying light. Looked good, fun to play, story and characters dog shit. And it just repeatedly stopped me playing to chat shit with randoms to point I just turned it off and returned it. And I’m getting the same feeling here.

Oh well, hope yours is a different experience and you can enjoy it.

Bailed on Dying light 2 after a few hours to play this. Much more engaging and interesting. Dying light fine and all but no real draw to it. Just finished the intro to this and love it. Visually it's stunning too

Downloading this now.

All the impressions seem to suggest the first few hours are disappointing, then the early areas of the open world (another 4 or 5 hours) are alright but not great. General consensus seems to be that from that point onwards it just clicks and ramps up into being a great game.

For those disappointed early on might be worth sticking with it.

Yeah I agree, I always go performance over looks.

How far in are you? I'm in chainscrapes still, well that area. I fully understand what you mean, expecting it to get better though.

I feel they're throwing too much at you too early, just here's this weapon, here is that weapon, characters do waffle on, a 2 min convo could be a 2 word convo by real people. Everyone sounds like a whingey kid.

Not a fan of the climbing and stuff either tbh, seems more of a chore that anything else. Swimming can feck off also, in any game ever.

Only playing on default difficulty I think, but the machines all seem to take a ton of arrows for no real reason. All machines seem to be able to jump miles and stuff too, have tracking guns. Seems to have been made purposely over difficult to be clever.

I'll be honest, I've got more gripes than positives at the minute, but I'm hopeful still, always find games a grind early on.

Hated AC Valhalla for the first 10 hours, loved it for the rest

I'd have those exact impressions, not quite got to the bit where it ramps up yet but sure it's coming. HZD was the same, RDR2, AC Valhalla. It appears Devs don't know how to start a game.

Witcher 3 had the most decent start I can remember.

I've just hit a point in the story where it feels like it's opened the game up. Been given a few options if where to head. The world is huge.

I wish you luck, bud. I just turned it off and deleted it. I couldn’t stand it anymore. Everything was just grating on me to the point I was starting to getting annoyed by every little thing. Especially aloy narrating every little thing she does. “I’ll put this in my stash” over and over and over. I just got to my first tall neck, and she wouldn’t shut up. ”I’ll need to do this and then that and go here and then do that because I’m the only one who can!” and I’m thinking, I know how a fecking ladder works!

Meh, I guess I’ll just find something else to do with my Saturday afternoon. Oh well, thank god for amazons awesome return policy.

Horizon 1 did start off very slow. Tried to replay is on PS5 because of the update and actually stopped because of how boring the first few hours are. TW3 had a small tutorial at the start with Ciri but it was grand and didn't drag out.

Enjoying this so far though it is a bit of a slow starter considering i'm six hours in. I prefer being an unaccompanied solo character so it was nice to get past the prologue. The world is just gorgeous and feels organic.

The amount of side quests and fetch quests look huge and might become an issue as i go further into the game but i'll cross those bridges when I come to them.

Funny because I loved the start of that game and slowly got more annoyed with the pure size and duration of everything

I was lucky there was nothing else I wanted to play around the time I got it, so even though it was probably too long, it wasn't a bad thing for me  definitely would be annoyingly long otherwise.

Anyone turned on the auto loot thing? I'm trying not to so far.

I do feel having to blast the acid canisters off a robot you need to use acid arrows for is a bit backwards, you'll only ever have 1 or 2 of what you need

The writing is terrible. The first was pretty bad too.

The overall story ended up good in the first.

It's the conversation between people though, they always bang on about how hard they are and their past glories when nobody feckin asked.

What do people make of the voice acting? The very first cut scene it was off for me and I couldn't take if there was an audio sync issue or if its just poor voice acting or animation.

The shimmering is a big issue for me. Clearly a pretty game underneath but the visibility is poor on my tele.

Close the game twice, and open it twice, there's a fix in the background for it apparently, only updates when you open the game, then installs when you reopen it or something I've read.

Voice acting is on a very average level imo, same with alot of the dialogue.

Very pretty though.

I feel they've just made every enemy fast as feck so you can't dodge, you're gonna take damage every battle. There's no way to clear loads with sheer skill. Melee weapons Vs anything still suck.

The voice acting is good for a game and the facial animations are incredible, almost next level, I’d say, the problem is that like the first game the actual dialogue is very basic and no amount of brilliant animations or acting will make up for that.

I’d say the story is just about interesting enough to keep me going, similar to the first.

Yeah that isn't my problem (it might be later but I'm only a few cutscenes in). There must be an audio sync issue somewhere but I can't figure out where since I'm just using TV speakers and I don't think the tele has any processing. Good to know its probably something I can fix though rather than the game being off.

Change sound output to PCM on the playstation and see if that solves your sync issues.

I’m only a couple of hours in but there’s nothing about it that stands out at all. I feel like I could just as easily be playing the first one again.

A lot of impressions said they were down on the game at first and then they turned a corner and it kept getting better. Around 6-8 hours in I think.
