He's a good player and he'll get better but I'm not convinced he's good enough on the ball (possibly yet) to make a massive difference. We need a creative player in midfield and he's not it. Right now he's just a worse version of Fletcher and the one we have has had a pretty poor season overall.

Get in!!! :D

Fantastic news, we need to get a truly world class midfielder and not a rookie

Henderson is over rated - he offers little creativity.

As I think I've said before - my Sunderland season ticket holder pal thinks he could be the real deal. Box to box and covers every blade of grass, loads of energy and good passing. Undoubtedly not the finished article though.

He thinks he's best on the right at the minute but when he's the finished article he'll move inside.

Good potential from what I've seen. One for the future.

Great news.

We should be focussing on the best young talent in Europe, not overrated English youngsters.

Yeah - why buy a player from the Premier League when you can pay double for a young lad from France. They always go well over here.

Yes but not here. Rodwell is far better

Based on what? England Caps? Appearences this season? Performance this season?

A distinct matter of opinion.

For the record I can see United also chasing Rodwell, if he can prove his fitness between now and the end of the season, but it doesn't mean United don't have an interest in Henderson as well.

Steve Bruce has admitted Fergie has been asked to be kept informed. Clearly the clubs have a decent relationship given Richardson, Campbell and Welbeck all pitching up there so I wouldn't rule it out - especially if Fergie decides to sacrifice Welbeck. A midfielder in and a forward out might suit everyone given relative squad issues Sunderland and United need to address.

He has been called box to box many times but is he really that kind of a player?
He runs with the ball at times, which is good for a central midfielder, but considering he plays wide right as well, its hardly surprising

He has been just about alright everytime i've seen him play, which hasnt been a lot, so I cant really judge him.
Then again I didnt see that much potential in Smalling. Thought he was a good young player at Fulham and not much more and would take a few seasons to settle down at United. Clearly the experts understand football a lot better than I do

It always baffles me when United fans even entertain that thought these days. Can't have seen him play this season, surely?

Good point, well made. If only all our other resident wannabe football scouts had the same humility.

Let's be honest, that interview amounts to nothing at all. I also intend staying in my current employment beyond the summer, but if someone offers to make me a millionaire overnight, work in the best possible conditions and with brilliant co-workers then it's fair to say my intentions will probably go straight out the window.

He's been no less vital to Sunderland than Henderson.

Watched a lot of Sunderland this year and I have been impressed with Welbeck. Works hard, decent movement and has been generally very good.

Is he United quaility? I'm not sure to be honest and personally can't see where he's going to fit in. Won't get in before Rooney, Hernandez or Berbatov - as well as Macheda coming back. Now he's had a taste of first team football is is going to be happy with Carling Cup games and a few run outs in the league?

I'm sure Fergie would like to keep him but if Sunderland make a big bid (or indeed put forward a possible swap deal) then he might be tempted. He's done it before with players like Rossi and Shawcross.

Time will tell I suppose.

This is a good observation!

As far as I can see Henderson has the stamina and the physique. It's difficult to see if he's talented enough to play for a top team but he have time on his side to develop his skills.

You mention so many players all with varying circumstances it's hard to make sense of any of it.

Rossi was sold because it was difficult to see where he would fit in.
Shawcross wanted to leave for 1st team action...and he's not really very good.
Macheda's not doing his claims a whole lot of good right now and it's hard to see him here next season
Welbeck is the most improved of the lot..no one is saying he's going to simply be playing CC games. If he continues this form he'll get in before some of the others....SAF would find it hard to leave him out

He might turn out to be a good midfielder in time but you somehow don't really feel he's the man to replace Scholes.

The thing about Henderson is that he is too young and I havent seen enough of him to really estimate how good he could be. One of the things I have noticed is that he is does seem up for it regardless of the opposition, which is always something I like in a United player. In terms of play, he hasnt shown boatloads of quality, but I am sure if SAF is interested he does have quality about him, hopefully quality like Ronaldo as opposed to quality like Carrick

:wenger:

dont understand henderson that much

to be honest i haven't seen that much from Rodwell to suggest he's the answer to our midfield problems

Don't think either looks like a young Keano which is what you'd expect for a 20 million midfielder

the young midfielder i'm most excited about at the minute is Paul Pogba - looks fantastic when i've seen him on MUTV

That is brilliant news. I don't people have been so happy here on the cafe when a player has snubbed us until now.

A lot of people weren't happy when we were interested in Valencia (me included), a lot of people weren't happy when we were interested in Carrick...it's not really a good sign of the player's quality.

I've been amazed at how much talk there's been about him this season because he's not the type of player to be over-hyped - he's not flashy, he's not silky smooth, he's not a player who shows that typical English bullishness that the media lap up...he's very much a consistent but unspectacular all-rounder. They're typically not very noteworthy.

Would suggest he's got a lot of quality to his game that some people are missing hugely, or it's just entirely fuelled by Bruce's constant chatter about him.

Not completely sure what to make of him but he looks like Darren Fletcher in his younger years - who was highly regarded by many associated with the club - with a bit more quality.

I don't see what's "hard to make sense of"?

I raised two points - 1) I don't think Welbeck will get regular first team football and 2) Fergie has form for selling players he seems to rate if he gets a decent offer. Whats complicated about that?

You also seem to be getting a bit carried away. Welbeck has done very well for Sunderland this year, no doubt - but can you really see him getting in to the side before Rooney (New £200k a week contract) Berbatov (top scorer, probably new contract) and Hernandez (great impact, potential star)?

He's had some very good games for Sunderland this year, but don't get carried away - he's a worker, he's quick and has decent movement.

He might become a very good player but he'll need to play regularly, week in week out, and I can't see it happening at United.

I've no idea what Fergie thinks, nor whether Welbeck will want to come back and fight for a place - fair play if he does. I'm simply saying that if Sunderland came in with a (for example) £10 million bid then no doubt United, with their own transfer targets and other players who can play in Welbeck's position might be tempted to sell.

He can play on the wing and play as a striker, he WILL get 1st team football

Lets hope so. Bit different playing in the reserves though.

He'll get in on the wing? With Giggs, Park, Nani and Valencia and Cleverly? On here, I'm forever hearing about how many wingers we already have.

Bold claim that he WILL get first team football. Still doubt it would be as many games as he'd get at Sunderland.

For the record I'd love him to come back and be a success - just not sure it'll happen.
