People crying about the fee are still in yesteryear for feck sake. We want him and we'll pay what they want for him.

He's quality and vastly underrated for being ugly, nicknamed slab head and being English playing for Leicester.

If he played in Spain, Italy or France and had a foreign name he'd be far more desired and thats the sad truth of some of the posters here.

The boy is great. He'll improve our backline immensely. No idea why people are giving him shit. Great on the ball, great in the air, ariel threat, young, tall, calm.

Who gives a feck what the transfer is? We gave a feck last year and ended up with nobody. You pay the going rate. Not what people are worth.

The only reason I can see we're doing this is his aerial ability. If we sell Lukaku, we'll need someone who is strong on set pieces in both boxes (Lukaku is underrated defensively) and so Maguire makes sense in that respect. In almost every other respect, it makes no sense.

£70 million? He's not even worth half that.

And with our shambolic transfers in the past 6 years, we'll end up paying more.

Is there really no one else we can get with that amount of money?

So he's worth what...30-35m?
Doesn't get you a lot these days....

Smalling is probably better than him in the air, though.

He is good on the ball.

Lukaku is a menace in his own box.

I think he's worth a bid, he would absolutely stabilize our defense, no questions asked.

We are going to pay even more now. We have learned nothing watching him for another year, it's stupidity.
Maybe the club was looking at other targets, or they wanted to give other defenders a chance first, or at the time they weren't sure he was worth the money so wanted to wait another year? I don't see what's stupid about it. maybe you're just butt-hurt your beloved Mourinho didn't get his man.

Another poster bringing up Jose

Keep defending this clubs bullshit then, you deserve it.

That's not the p oint though. He is not an elite CB and wouldn't improve like what VVD for liverpool.

Put this way, he is not a 70m improvement on Jones or Smalling.

I'm not defending the club, we've been a shambles in just about every way in the last decade, and I wish we could've had the foresight to sign Maguire from Hull instead of now, but complaining about them waiting a year and paying a bit more for him is just silly.

So I guess that "only 100m to spend this summer" theory is firmly out of the window now? Who could have guessed. It's like Odgen doesn't know shit ever since Moyes left.

Generally speaking any time a journalist says "X have a transfer budget of Y this summer" they're either massively oversimplifying or just talking shit. That's not how player purchases get budgeted.

I rate Maguire and would be happy with him at United. He's an excellent player whose only real weakness is a lack of pace. That said £70m is about the limit of what I would pay for him. If Leicester are rejecting that and want him to be the most expensive CB ever then I would look elsewhere. There is no shortage of left sided CBs who would improve us.

I’m confused. I’m sure you were upset when Mourinho wasn’t backed heavily in the last transfer window, but now your upset that we are trying to rectify that by doing the opposite?

At least the club is looking at addressing the CB issue. I was starting to feel like we were happy with Smalling and Jones.

He has more goals from headers than Maguire does so I'm not sure how you can deduce that.

By watching them both? And seeing their threat levels?

It's not all about stats or we'd all think lukaku has done a great job.

He's not worth 35M haha really

to everyone bringing up VVD's fee (which is irrelevant now): how much would VVD go for right now if Liverpool were to sell? £120m? if you're lucky? that may help put Maguire into perspective.
How much do you think he would go for if he was still 26 and at Southampton? I cannot see Southampton demanding £120m for him can you?

I'm upset that we handle everything poorly, not that we are trying to sign Maguire.

Smalling is better than Maguire in the air? Jesus pass me some of what you're smoking

We're in same boat as livepool was two years ago. Leaking easy goals and desperate for a CB. They then got fleeced for 75m by Southampton for vvd. We need to accept that buying from a PL side is going to cost us similarly.

What? Say whatever you want about MaGuire's ability as a centre half, but he's way, way better than anyone we've got in the air. He's great in the air.
So is Smalling, so it's not a slight on Maguire at all. Maguire's a better overall defender than Smalling though, no question.

Just seems like a weird opportunity to put a negative spin on, what is essentially, the club trying to make up for past mistakes. We may have to spend a few million extra but hardly the end of the world and a good step towards upgrading our defence.

Not paying for Maguire last season then chasing him again this season it's not a big problem bar showing up the posters who couldn't stop telling us in any discussion that the board was genius for not paying 70m to bring Mourinho Maguire. These posters now look clueless in front of the board's stupidity and contradiction.

Why are people acting like it's their money used to buy him.

Whether we get him for 50 or 70M£ shouldn't matter to us, i'd prefer that than those 20M£ difference going to the glazers pocket, which they will one way or the other.

He's better than anything we have and it's not a coincidence that we're competing with City for his signature.

That link or picture or whatever it is don't work, not sure what it is but if it is any kind of stat suggesting Mike Smalling is better than Maguire in the air, whoever made it up needs their head testing.
