£70m?! For Harry Maguire?!?! And they rejected it?!?!?!

What the actual feck

He is slow, but I'd say he's not much quicker or slower than Di Ligt is, any everybody wants him (Me included  )
This is true, De Ligt is slow which really put me off him. I like my CBs to have recovery pace.

Maguire is a very good CB but I feel he needs a pacy CB next to him. Playing a highline would be quite detrimental with Maguire/Lindelof. Smalling/Bailly/Axel will probably partner him i'd imagine.

That's mainly because some of the posters on here are genuine football nerds. Not only people who know a lot about football but who also spend time assessing and looking at stats in detail. For what its worth, I really wanted us to sign Sanchez when he moved to Arsenal, that was the point when we should have pushed big for him (along with Vidal).

Getting offtopic but I agree, players always need at least 1 and a half years to bed in. But Fred is someone I just simply do not rate. I just don't see it. But feel free to continue in the relevant thread.

Yeah fair play if people do that, I look at stats but don't dive into them as deeply as some do on here, to much to do haha. Yeah I was the same, wanted him when he was at Udinese and again when he was at Barca, can't see us getting him off the books this summer so fingers crossed he comes good (won't hold my breath).

I actually agree on Fred, I don't see it and can't see him being good enough but will give him this season to prove me wrong.

£35m. And yes, I would have felt that's more than fair for someone whose had one good season and there are still question marks over in his game going forward.

You do realise we have a set budget and can sign players outside of the PL? I don't buy the whole foreign player needs time to adapt. It only seems to be our players that need to adapt whereas players for other teams hit the ground running. The extra 15-20m here and there adds up and could mean we don't get all the players we desperately need.

I do realise that yes
Darmian, Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Martial, Di Maria, Mkhi, Depay and Fred all came from outside of the PL and they've all gone, or as fans we want gone, with the extent of Martial who we cling on to

A deal of cash plus a player wouldn't surprise me tbh.

If we add Maguire we’d have lindelof Maguire Smalling Jones rojo bailly and tuanzebe. One needs to go. Give them a pick of rojo or Jones, I’d rather give bailly another shot.

I have to think Gary Cahill to Chelsea. Was a good move for them.

VVD was younger and better than Maguire when he moved. £85m for Harry fecking Maguire would be the biggest fleecing in recent memory. He is not that good. For that money people are expecting VVD level talent and when he repeatedly gets beaten for pace in our high press system he will get eaten alive.

If he wanted a move he wouldnt have signed a contract extension last September. It is time to walk away from the table in my opinion.

VVD was 26 (moved in Jan, turned 27 in July). Maguire is 26 and will turn 27 in March. So VVD wasn't younger but he was better.

Maguire is a realistic obtainable player who would greatly improve us!

I'm not sure that Maguire is realistically any more obtainable though is he..?
Leicester seem to be very resistant, and I may be wrong, but hasn't Maguire hinted that he wouldn't be interested in United?

Or let me put it another way, I don't think Maguire has shown anymore interest in joining United than Koulibaly has..?

It's funny, we could have got him for 60-65 if we just put up the money last summer.

My point is he clearly shouldn't be costing more than Laporte.

Why not? Did you see Laporte last season the few times he actually had to defend - like Spurs in the Chmapions League for example? Hugely overrated defender.

Kompany did his ideal City 11 before he left, and chose wobbly John Stones to partner him ahead of Laporte; says it all.

Release clause or not, he isn't worth more than what we have just bid.

He isn't worth the money but comparing him to signings with release clause is not a fair comparison.

And in that same time period, we've signed
Schneiderlin, Sanchez, Lukaku, Matic all from the PL. Worked out great for us too, eh.

What you need to understand is that we don't need the money and that to go out and buy a ready made replacement from this league, we'll end up having to pay £40 / £50m for someone like Dunk or the Burnley chap whose name I won't even attempt to spell. What's the point?

Apparently we have £100m + to spend without having to sell to improve the team as the board see it as a great time to make a push, with yourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal all being in a bit of a mess or a transition. Bringing in Tielemans and a top class winger could see us have enough to push for the top 6, or with a slice of luck something even higher. Not saying that's what we'll achieve, but this season is viewed as THE season to do it.
Ya that’s fair enough but I reckon £70m is a great offer and I personally would look for alternatives if that bid is indeed rejected.

Also it's hilarious how these same clowns denied Mourinho Maguire last summer when we could have gotten him for £70m because they would only be willing to spend that amount on "someone like Varane" Then one year later they proceed to bid for him when his price has risen.

Feck me...

The hilarious thing are those posters who kept posting "Thank feck the board didn't listen to Mourinho and bought Maguire".:lol::lol:

Laporte is class. Kompany can say what he wants, Stones is the player sitting on the bench, not Laporte.

I’d honestly want to see the club pay £170m on a CB so I see as less of Smalling and Jones as possible.

Do the deal.

 you're speaking as if Napoli are some second grade team that are impossible to watch or something.

You've obviously seen him play, yet because I disagree with you I haven't? Get a grip.
I'm not saying that they aren't easily accessible. I'm saying your opinion suggests you haven't watched both play. Either way your opinion that 'he couldn't lace his boots' is a shambles so leave it there.

Pains me that we want him, he's simply not that good.

We have plenty of decent-good CBs, if we're in the market it should be for an absolute standout performer. I don't personally care if we spend £40m or £80m on a CB but I care that we at least buy top quality. If he wasn't English, would we even be linked with him?

Unfortunately Van Dyke's price of 75 mil is now the benchmark for a good defender. So McGuire wont be cheaper (75-80 mil.)

I'd argue it's yours that suggests that.

70m, damn. He's not at VVDs level so you can't expect him to fetch as much but once again we are seeing English tax in play. On one hand I'm thinking fair play to Leicester for standing their ground and I would hope (as we did with Stones in the past), Everton would also do the same, but he's simply not worth big big money.

Apparently Hull have a 15% clause on him so they'd get 10.5m of that 70m. Maybe another reason Leicester are trying to squeeze out as much as possible.

He's decent enough but we're going to get bent over the table at that kind of price. Way too expensive.

Yeah this point I totally agree with. Bit daft we’re willing to high this summer when the deal was right there and doable last year. Just all a bit amateur from us like usual.

This never actually occurred to me until now. Absolute spanners

The Glazers just didn't want to spend last summer.

This year they will have the Pogba and Lukaku money.
