We are right to take this stance - he is overpriced. Whether or not he improves our defence, and he will, paying that much money actually puts an unfair pressure on the player as well as reinforcing the message that United will pay anything if you just wait long enough. We've no doubt put our own valuation on him, with a little wiggle room, and if we can't get there we should walk away. Its not as if quality centre backs are that hard to find when you have £70m to spend on one.

We'll be talking with clubs about a few other players in his position I've no doubt.

Yes and no. Leicester is absolutely right to say to City or United that we want £100 million or £80 million - I perfectly agree with you. Just like United can do with Pogba. Or they can even say - no, we are not gonna sell at any price.

But here is the problem - regardless of whether or not Leicester agrees with it or accepts it - they are a stepping stone. And don't think that I am trying to disrespect Leicester, I have the utmost respect for what Leicester have built. And in the position they now are - about 95 % of all other clubs in England are stepping-stones towards Leicester, but for City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs - Leicester are a stepping stone.

And if Leicester starts making it too difficult for players to get their Dream-moves - it could create problems for Leicester when they try to sign players later. So you are right - Leicester could in theory ask for £90 million for Maguire - and that is their right, but its probably £15-20 million higher than what is realistic...and Harry Maguire knows it. And if Leicester destroys his Dream move over an unrealistic fee, that could possible have an effect on the next Harry Maguire deciding between Palace, Leicester or West Ham.

So your Economics 101 is perhaps a bit more complex than what you make it out to be.
 
The fact that we have spent 65M this summer, last summer was pretty similar, I am past caring what the price is now, just get it done you stingy feckers.

Offer 80M, sort out a bloody DMC and then work on outgoings, Woodward the man takes an absolute age to do fecking anything!

He is overpriced, as are most players but when you specifically target one player, as we clearly have here, the selling club sets the price and if they don't want to negotiate on that price then that is their prerogative.

However with how prices are rising this is never a signing that is going to get cheaper by waiting it out, the club found themselves priced out last summer suggesting around £50m was too expensive. This summer they appear happy to pay considerably more than that but once again, not the price the selling club want.

We have a new manager in place and should have done business early this summer, as it is we are two weeks from the new season and are still at least two critical signings short of where we need to be. That is not good enough.

He knows he's got till the end of August to sort the outgoings and he's not one to do things earlier than he needs to. He can sort Pogba, Lukaku and a couple of the dross later on.

We will not sign Harry Maguire and here's why...

Not sure if we put in a bid last season but Leicester wanted 70 million for him, which Woodward thought wasn't a good investment.

Now this year he is 1 year older (26) and Leicester want 80-90million for him!

So now it would be an even worse investment because he is a year older and probably only has 1 big transfer left in him, therefore if we sign him for 80 million and he signs a 4 year contract, by the time that is up he'll be 30 and worth only half that.

The club simply won't re-coup the money for him. They see buying players business investments, so they need to see some form of return on their investment.
He doesn't come with a huge commercial value either, i.e he won't bring lucrative sponsorship deals/image rights etc with him and he's not going to be a huge shirt seller.

Think what this would also mean for future transfers, it'll just drive up the cost for other players. Other clubs will say if Harry Maguire is worth 80 million then our player is worth the same or more! Woodward is a clever businessman despite his inept behavior in the transfer marker and will be aware of this.

The ONLY way we could get him is if he hands in a transfer request close to deadline day and Leicester/Utd manage to agree a lower fee close to the 70million offered off the back of this.

If we signed him for 70 million your argument for not signing him for 80 million would still apply ie we'd only recoup around half of that when if we sold him at 30. It's a flawed point you are making as is your argument for pushing up future transfer prices, remember we already did that with Pogba, we just signed a right back with 1 good season for 50 million. Maguire isn't a Ronaldo type buy, in that he comes in does and we sell for profit. Guys like him and Pogba aren't in for the long haul. Milinković-Savić has been linked to us, if he did come, same thing, couple of good seasons and he'll want to to go home to Spain. Maguire would be a Keano, Rooney type signing, he'd play here for the best part of their career and become a leader, senior player at the club. There's profit to be made by being successful, and bringing in players like Maguire can help achieve that. Sometimes signing aren't made for their resale value or how many shirts they will sell, but for what they will do on the pitch, Maguire certainly falls into the latter

"There has been no progress towards an exit [for Maguire] over the past 10 days and I was even told on Tuesday from a well-placed source that discussions had “gone dead”. I think City will be feeling gradually more confident that they will keep their star defender."

If his signing helps UCL qualification and who knows maybe even trophies then the money from that will re-coup some of the transfer fee. Not everything is about shirt sales and social media stardom
 
It's by mid next week or never. There is no way Leicester will sell him 2 weeks from window shutting with clubs knowing they have received a huge fee looking to fleece them. Its tight as it is.

This was left way too long and should have been going on behind scenes since April, if it wasn't.
