Harry Maguire | Signed

Ole wants Maguire and is willing to go to the final day of transfer window to get him. That's a big risk imo.

Risk maybe for the upcoming season. In one of the questions OGS got, he said, they are working on deals but, they are not just going to change track if it isn't going through. That speaks to the fact that they are trying to rebuild the right way and not just do band aid fixes to maybe do okay this season but, then be left with more baggage that doesn't really get us to our end goal .

It's a tough balance to strike, short term goals and long term goals. In this case, think it's absolutely the right decision, if the right player is not available for the long term plan, then don't just go get someone else when they won't necessarily help us that much this season.

Come on. It is still Leicester, not Barcelona, squad is not THAT great. Marcos Rojo is an Argentina international, Jones used to be an England international. They are good enough to come as a replacement if accompanied by additional 60m pounds.

this is where people are getting confused. Jones and Rojo are on great contracts with us. Leicester will not pay them what they get with us, 1) because they aren't very good players and 2) both are injury prone. Both players are under contract, both recently resigned, so unless either is willing to take a pay cut and move, they will stay.

Is this a contender for the greatest tackle in the history of the sport or just plain weird?

I'll let you decide.
Without context it looks like a really bad injury. Photoshop Jones under a tractor and you'd believe it.

Remembering the incident, it's so feckin hilarious and admirable in equal measure. Slipping like a club foot clown then scrambling on his knees to clear it.

It's an opinion you melt, the lad thinks he is worth 60m, I think he is worth the same, Leicester think he is worth 80m.

Big fecking whoop, and I can honestly say that neither myself or the other guy, give two fecks whether you think we are wrong or not
If you don't care about my opinion, why did you seek my post out and respond to it?

What method are you using to say he's worth £60m but not £80m?

It's a good job noone else fancies him......Gees. This is just a joke. Either we want him and pay or we walk away and go for someone cheaper ..... Probably waiting for Lukaku money for this to go through....
Ed might as well of gone on holiday for all the use he's doing....

Let's start with how much De Ligt went for and work from there. Maguire isn't worth 80m

Exactly this. People seem to think it'll be easy to move on these players as part of a deal without taking into account that, at clubs like Leicester, they would be among the higher earners. Unless they were prepared to take a wage cut. And the risk/reward profile is too high.

Extending Jones ' contract didn't preserve his value in the market because the clubs that may have taken him can't afford him.

I think the overwhelming majority think Maguire only worth around 50m-60m in the current market, and some think its ok to overpaid him by 10-20m because we are so desperate. Anyway the only one I've heard who really thinks he worth more than 80m, is apparently the people from Leicester, and some random/mental fans here.

Dont think its worth fecking up our season over 20-30m either.
We should either pay up or move on to other targets, not signing a single CB would be incredible.

I don't understand why the fans care how much the club is prepared to shell out on a specific player.

Jones would need only glance at the tractor and his leg would be in danger of falling off.

It looks like it's the other way around.

Leicester fans watch more of Maguire, so have a better idea about his quality. MUFC and LCFC understand football finance better than anyone here, and therefore have a better idea about prices.

Those calling for people to calm down about the £80m asking price are generally saying that 'it is what it is' and 'deal with the new reality'. Whereas I've read numerous emotionally charged posts about Maguire's price being too high and several of those people resorting to personal insults when they're caught out by logic. You've just called people 'mental' for disagreeing with you, for example.

Precisely.

That's fair. But he's the exception rather than the rule. You can't expect every purchase to be that economical. Almost every other big transfer shows that prices are going up rather than down.

VVD, at the same age as Maguire, went for roughly the same amount when adjusted for inflation.

This is really semantics, but that is just not correct.
If I have a Snickers-bar and I want 200 USD for it; that does not constitute market value.
If some idiot decides to pay it; that does.
Its the agreement in an open market place that decides value.

It is correct and your analogy falls down on the fact there are millions of snickers available at about 50p making that it's market value. If you had the only snicker in the world like Leicester do Maguire and you were asking 200 dollars for it and someone paid then that would indeed be its market value.

This is why I don't think there is any interest in a RW, if we get what we think is possible this window then we should easily have enough for top four and then next season you couldn't have a more perfect transfer target for RW than Sancho. Manage to get him and then upgrade once more in one or two positions and next season and we could genuinely have a crack at a title race with Liverpool and City.

VVD was worth it though

I think some of us want the club to show some integrity and play the oil-club game.

We don't need oil money to compete in the transfer market. We simply need our owners to reinvest the profits back into the club through the transfer market.

I don't understand why the fans care how much the club is prepared to shell out on a specific player.

I used to think the same but, realistically, bad buys for big money hurt the club. We have limited resources, so fans are right to care about how the money is spent.

Whereas what I don't understand is how fans think they're actually able to accurately assess the value of a player. One suspects many wouldn't even be able to pull together a complete list of the factors and metrics that go into such a valuation, let alone use them to come to a valuation. Caring I get, thinking they actually know the difference between a 60m or 80m player I don't.

Well said.

The fact that we have signed one RB and a youngster who will be a squad player is nothing short of disgraceful and a smack in the face to all Utd fans worldwide. It shows a lack of ambition, a lack of willingness to be competitive for trophies and I expect all the Board and Ed care about is if Manchester United make top 4. Embarrasing

I'll have some of what you're smoking, in essence not good enough for us but fine for little old Leicester.
That arrogance would have been befitting for the Sir Alex era but certainly not now.
I dont think you understand the ambition of our club or the project we have under way.

This entitled attitude grinds my gears.
Football would be boring if everyone just rolled over and acted like stepping stones.
The top 6 has had changing of the guard over the last 10 years with Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool with Champions league being very succesful only last year.

We've signed some duds like most clubs but our recent transfer policy and formula seems to be heading in the right direction and Brendan seems to be getting us to play some good stuff.
This ambition and poicy, imo, does not involve us needing or wanting to sell our prize assets and take inferior highly paid crocks in part exchange.

You are an absolutely massive club steeped in history but I would argue that you at present are not a clearcut shoe in for high profile/ valuable players as you once were, other clubs have surpassed you significantly so either you pay ridiculous fees to strive for for immediate improvement or have a class of 92 or whatever year approach which takes longer. Just my opinion and not a wind up btw before the attack dogs start.

If our ambition is just to make top 4 that is by no means guaranteed with the business we’ve done so far, and a few of the youth’s coming through. We need a minimum of 2 more starters to have a fighting chance imo.

Only way Phil Jones would come to us is if either Utd agree to pay some of his wages or he takes a pay cut, because with him already rumoured being on around £120k, no way are we going to bring him in on that kind of money as our 3rd highest earner, he isn't worth it
It’s never going to happen so no point in discussing it really.

Why is DeLigt used as a price comparison?

He had a gentleman’s agreement with Ajax not be priced out of a move. That’s why he went for a reasonable fee. Otherwise he would have went for €100m in a bidding war

Seems there's a stalemate over £10 million.? Supposedly we've offerd £70 million with add ons up to 80.? This is not enough apparently.
Can see where the foxes are coming from, they want the biggest amount, Utd I feel have bid a fair amount, but if we're to get him we will have to overpay, or wait to see if they bend? It's up to the player himself to go and tell them I want to go for what's offered?

Can't see him doing that . Is going to drag on and not long left

Indeed.

I mean, let's be honest, the vast majority of football fans (and I include myself here) get their player values and estimations through the various media sources scattered around the internet. They tell us what a player is worth and we treat it as gospel, going on to form baseless opinions that, more often than not, are built upon media conjecture. Truth of the matter is we don't know a damn thing.

I hadn't the feintest idea how much money Harry Maguire was worth before reports came in from <whoever> suggesting his true worth to be £50 million or thereabouts. The moral is, don't believe everything you read from a media source whose primary goals are to get clicks and create controversy in the process.

It's getting there yeah, i can't even tell the difference between most of them. They all have a username with some variation of Fox in it and post virtually the same shite. Over and over again.

Hilarious and sad in equal measure at this point. One of them keeps popping in almost every page replying to a random poster and demanding that United either pay up or move on. Or words to that effect.

Not sure they have realized that no one here is part of the negotiations or in a position to affect Uniteds transfer policy.

The ones that seem to be super confident that they'll definitely be gate crashing the top 6 party too intrigue me.

They've signed a fairly average Newcastle miscellaneous sort of forward, and could yet lose their best defender (Oh sorry, that's Evans according to them), yet act like they're the re-incarnation of Blackburn under Walker.

We can't truly think that we can just wait it out, and they'll be all "allllriight then, we'll take 70m after all"

Unless Maguire chucked the biggest, out of character AWOL type shenanigans of all time.

Unfortunately, most players are hopefully money fixated.
But maybe, just maybe a few at middle ground Premier teams, will now start thinking, "right, If I sign a 4-5 year deal here, I might not be able to get out down the line"

Or lower ticket prices. I'm not so sure that galactic signings is the way to go, not quite implying that Maguire is remotely a Galactica signing, although the price would suggest so. Talking finance, do you think his marketability is close to justify the 80m price tag?

@BlabyFox it all makes sense of course, but if you didn’t want to sell you would have put closure to negotiations long ago. You didn’t.

So if Maguire is sold, Leicester will have to buy a replacement (someone who is MUCH better overall than Phil Jones, as per your words). For how much do you think you will be able to buy good defender after the deal is done?

That VVD thread did not age well. I hope nobody who was laughing in that thread isn't moaning in this one.

It seems surprising you're sneering at the likes of Jones and Rojo, and acting like we're trying to ship you a 53 year old Mike Phelan or something.

They're really not that bad, it's just some of our fans tend to think our players are top class, or appalling. Shouldn't have to remind you that we kicked Evans, a player you now think is terrific into touch in order to keep our other defenders at the time.

I get the feeling with some of you recently arrived Leicester chaps that you really think you'll be a huge noise this season. I can't see it. But time will no doubt tell.

Well in this market the most soughed defender in this world, that is De ligt, cost around 67m. Sure whatever Leicester priced Maguire at is the new reality? Unfortunately no one else is interest in Maguire at that price, except some desperate/mental fans who doesn't care how much the club pay for.

No more than I care about our official Noodles sponsor.

'More money in' is the same as 'less money out'.

Ok fine, even we bid 500m you wouldn't care. There's no point discussing players value with you, because, what's the point?

I don't understand why the fans care how much the club is prepared to shell out on a specific player.

Fark sake, it's like this is a never ending cycle.

It's super obvious - you pay too much, or get too little for those you sell, and you deplete the pot.

Not having unlimited funds it very obviously limits future buys.

We're Manchester United for goodness sake, huge turnover, super rich etc, and we're already massively struggling to buy players due to hyper inflation.
