Does signing AWB, Maguire, Fernandes or any other player guarantee top 4? well obviously there are no guarantees but you would think with those 3 + James and maybe swapping Lukaku for "A Another" that top 4 would be pretty much nailed on, and if Ole failed to deliver with those improvements well it really would not be good enough.

So in the most basic terms finishing 4th in the Prem would probably generate around £6 million in prize money, qualifying for the CL would be at least £50 million, how much more than those figures depends on how far Utd or other prem clubs go so finishing 4th is worth £56 million minimum.

Then in terms of marketing, sponsorship, share price etc... finishing top 4 is worth well pure guess work but probably the same again as a minimum add too that shirt sales for Maguire will be huge if he is a success, and James could be a goldmine, not sure about AWB and Fernandes but they would a bump up.

So an outlay of £50 mil AWB, £50 mil Fernandes, £80 mil Maguire, £15 mil James and Lukaku replacement netted off call if £200 mil, but the amount of income their success would generate would probably be worth in excess of £120 million in their 1st season.... just gotsta make sure we get top 4

Yeah, but he is slow innit? We need to sign two defensively minded midfielders with explosive pace and give Pogba the AM role. This is my line up

-------------------DDG--------------------
AWB-Maguire-Lindelof-Shaw
-------Fernandes---Verrati---------
----------------Pogba--------------------
Hitler---------------------------Lingard
-----------------Lukaku-------------------
Does Hitler play there because the Nazis were far right?

Is that so Mystic Meg?

Lukaku with his 5 goals in 2 seasons? or how many is it?

The lukaku that doesn't fit our system and has a worse touch than Jozy Altidore.

Melodramatic much?

I just feel we can use funds elsewhere. Is our scouting that weak that we have to buy him? There's literally no other cheaper/better alternatives out there? We need to get better scouts.

Oh, and meanwhile, The Daily Mail have now shown their true class by publishing an article, a rehashed version of one from The Mirror, putting words into the mouth of our deceased owner Khun Vichai just for clicks, claiming that we'll allow him to leave if the right bid comes in. Classy.

My thoughts exactly.

No way is Smalling going to be 3rd choice. Playing him with Maguire would just be madness. He will just not suit the way we will be playing this season and going forward. Once Bailly learns to curb his enthusiasm and settle down, he'll be just fine. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the lineups will be towards end of preseason but he will most likely battle for 5th choice with the other Chuckle Brother with 4th choice at best.

Of course not, he'll probably still be 1st choice unless we sign a new CB.

People have been predicting Smalling's demise for years but yet he always ends up first choice every season under 3-4 different managers now. He has two great abilities that none of the others seem to have. He can actually defend and more importantly he can stay fit for more than 4-5 games in a row.

Over the last 2 years we've barely had the equivalent of a decent squad option if you cobble Jones, Bailly and Rojo's appearances together.

Smalling is better than Bailly

I suspect he will be 3rd choice CB though personally I’d play him and Maguire together
Better than Bailly, but worse than Lindelof. Him having no ball-playing skills is also a concern.

Hopefully, Lindelof and Maguire build a good partnership and the less we see of the others, the better.

Yeah that's why we conceded 54 goals last season and not mounted a decent league challenge for years because of accepting mediocrity as the norm. We keep going over the same ground every season but his time will be limited this season, that's for sure. No way will he be a starter this season. Don't see how you can not see that. No-one has come back with any conviction as to which of the top 6 he would start for. It would probably be Arsenal but only at a push too. So why the hell people think he's good enough for United is just baffling.

Anyway, if we do get Maguire, it will be academic anyway, so I'm happy.

Will need AWB to cover for their lack of pace

That can't be true surely?

That would be worse than United paying 80 for Maguire. £45m for a player who's 27/28 only played 2 seasons at the highest level and isn't even an international.

Woah buddy! 1 cap for England ... that’s worth an extra 20 mill straight away!

My concern is that getting the additional three players so late in pre-season will have increase expectations exponentially immediately. But their effectiveness of the integration into the tactical elements to be seen only by the 2nd half of the season.

The gap in the 1st half of the season will be worrying esp for the foreign players.

We had the best defensive record in the league going back to LVG with the majority of the same defenders. It worked because the team setup facilitated less goals going in and De Gea was brilliant. Last season however the GK was wobbly and the team was poor in helping out the defenders and we conceded sloppy goals.

Welcome to all the Leicester fans joining us! Hope you enjoy your time on the caf.

Well hopefully with DDG's contract sorted he can re-focus and get back to his best and with Maguire (or any other CB) coming in, we will have that stability at the back. We won't need to rely on the mediocrity of Jones, Smalling and Rojo.

Manchester United have no ambition any more the owners have decided that it is better to just try for a top four spot. That is the sad reallity. The owners need shifting..

Tagline checks out. Don't necessarrily disagree with all of it, though.

I don't understand this notion of "have no ambition" from the owners. If it is regarding spending, then we have spent quite a lot, especially after SAF. Obviously not in an exorbitant amount as the oil clubs (City, PSG) or clubs bankrolled by the national banks(Real Madrid, Barcelona), and actually won't like to see that here. If it's regarding signing big names, then we also have done that (Pogba, Lukaku, Di Maria etc). More than "no ambition", the main problem is to do with the mismanagement in the footballing level of the club such as hiring managers that don't fit the identity of the club, buying players to fit square pegs in round holes and overall lack of continuity that something like a dedicated and independent DOF could solve.

Nobody for one minute thought that the Falcao, Di Maria, Depay, Schweinsteiger, Lukaku, Ibrahimovic, Sanchez, Fred signings were going to turn out as they did. Everybody was gassed when we signed them and full of optimism. There were even threads hailing Woodward as a genius. If they had all been successful and got us titles, we wouldn't be having these discussions.

The club has to move on from players like Smalling if we want to be a modern team. All of the other 4 are good on the ball I don't see any place for him.

Better on the ball, but hes the one who plays. Because hes a better defender and theres 9 other outfield players to be better on the ball

Smalling is really really poor on the ball, It’s that he’s not good on the ball, he is absolutely incompetent.
9 players who can play with the ball at their feet is not good enough in the modern game, we could find a place for Smalling if he was a Vidic level defender or something, but he’s not even close.

I think he would be worth a somewhat crazy bid to us at this point.

I really believe in building from the back and chances are we're not the hottest option right now. As long as we try and improve the team. Look at City, at one point it felt like a joke when Moyes said they're at a level we should aspire to, but they've become the best team in the league and made a ton of bad investments on the road to getting there.

Transfers are a risk, but I don't think we can do much better than Maguire at this point in time and I'm pretty sure he would improve us quite a bit.

It would have been a dream to sign DeLigt or Koulibaly, but seeing as we're not even in the CL, we must be a hard sell for the level of talent that the best clubs in Europe are after.

But if we don't even try to enhance the squad significantly this summer, it would be ridiculous so let's hope something's in the works.

Both of those are a much bigger risk of being an abject failure than Maguire. Maguire may not have their top line, but he's consistently very good in the league which is exactly what we dont have right now.

What about that season where he was player of the hear material? He wasn’t pretty unstoppable and it’s a shame him and Bially didn’t gel well together. Smalling as the last man and Bially as the energy and speed to shut things down. Both great height and honestly should have worked.

Also, if we hadn't gone for Maguire, City would have made him their priority in January after they sell Mangala and Otamendi. Maguire wasn't my first choice either but I think it's the best we can do in terms of experience.

I’m not saying Smalling isn’t a good defender, he’s a great athlete but he’s not a great player.
We’ve seen what he can do, we know what he is, he’s been here for almost a decade, now it’s someone else’s turn.

Noticing a lack of supporters of the club that owns the player were interested in vehemently denying he’ll end up at United. Are they busy lining up to drive him to the airport?
