good luck selling one or even two of them.

in an ideal world, you sell two and keep Maguire, Lindelöf, Smalling, Tuanzebe and one of those other 3 (probably Jones). Looks good to me.

Don't know why people still think Smalling will be getting much of a sniff next season. He may get cup run outs but barring a major injury crisis thankfully we won't be seeing much of him if we get the CB we're all expecting.

I agree - hopefully it will be Maguire, Tuanzebe, Lindelof and Bailly for most of the season.

What is it with these smaller clubs fans having a bee in their bonnet when we're after their players. The best thing about this transfer being concluded will be the Leicester fans who popped up on here in the last few months pissing off back into their foxholes.

What’s your point? That’s like saying James is every bit as good as Mbappe when it comes to pure pace.. pointless thing to say.

Maguire at his best is a far better defender than Smalling at his best anyway, there’s no comparison.

Maguire is a far better footballer than Smalling, but purely as a defender? Not sure Maguire is capable of the type of defensive showing that Smalling put on at PSG last year. Maguire has never been part of a solid defensive unit at PL or International level. Of course that is not just on him but it doesn't make me confident in making wild statements about his defensive prowess.

How limiting is Maguire's slow movement if our defence plays deep and force teams to take long shots at De Gea? We'd probably end up with pockets of space between the midfield and defense if we had to rely on Matic slowly wandering about in that area.
A decent DM, or just one with working legs, would definitely help

I don’t think this is true. He has been immense a few times against City which convinced Pep to go after him. City are a level above PSG as a team.

It has been notable. Plus a couple seem very sure they'll be breaking the top 6.

They do seem to have a chip on their shoulder! Anyone would think we've been tapping him up.

Just imagine how comforting it will be every week when you are waiting for the line-ups to come out to know that you will see

————-De Gea
AWB-Maguire-Lindelof-Shaw

rather than wondering if player x will be dropped for a string of errors, or if we will play with a back 5 to cover for Dalot’s/Young’s defensive weaknesses.

It will be a big fee but will hopefully bring some much needed assurance and consistency that we can build from.

Yep - agreed.

Defense foundation being built right before our eyes. Will be nice to finally get a sound back line with capable players.

Pep is aroused by his ability to play out and deal with a high press, but even with that he has doubts about his defensive ability. Maguire is great fun to watch, the ability on the ball is well above most CB's but if City really wanted him they would have got him. Mild interest at a much lower price.

You wonder if they were on Chelsea and City forums giving it loads over Kante and Mahrez.

I wouldn't be surprised, i remember reading similar comments online when City were after Mahrez. The same lines were being said I.e we don't be bullied, we don't have to sell etc

Apparently they're looking at Dunk for £45mil

That can't be true surely?

That would be worse than United paying 80 for Maguire. £45m for a player who's 27/28 only played 2 seasons at the highest level and isn't even an international.

Smalling is better than Bailly

I suspect he will be 3rd choice CB though personally I’d play him and Maguire together
I find it really frustrated that Smalling gets lumped in with Jones as the 'chuckle brothers'

Smalling is consistently good.

I don’t think it’s ‘mild’ interest, they’ve made a bid by all accounts. Sam Lee has been reporting he was their number CB target, Rodgers said two clubs have bid and Guardiola said the other day he wouldn’t talk about him as it’s disrespectful (Bayern and Sane) ‘he’s a Leicester player’ when asked if he was in for him. Similar to Van Dijk they want him but won’t pay the fee it’s going to take.

There are going to be grumbles about the price, but when all is said and done, our defence is going to be fecking solid this season.

Exactly.

I remember many posters on here were very unhappy that we paid a lot of money for AWB. From what I’ve seen of Wan-Bissaka so far in the 3 pre-season games, he looks worth every single penny that we spent to bring him here.

If these reports are true and Maguire comes in to help shore up that leaky defence and performs like a commanding leader at the back then I couldn’t give a monkeys about the price. It’s how they perform on the park that should matter.

Didn't someone say there would be a CB exodus if we signed Maguire?

Rojo, Bailly and Jones to go then?
I wouldn’t expect all three to be sold but at least one or two should go. Otherwise we’re going to have six or seven CBs if Tuanzebe makes the squad which he should. Then again, Jones, Bailly, and Rojo really only count as one since all three are injured more than not.

And what’s up with the thread title? Can’t people just chill out until something concrete has come out before adding it to the title?

Pretty misleading and reeks of desperation...

No. Next season will be the first time.

Those Arsenal pretenders might have been the invincibles, but we'll be the inpenetrables. Winning the league with 29 1-0 victories, 8 nil all draws and battering Liverpool 7-0 at Anfield.

I think Jones will be above Smalling in the pecking order.

Smalling will start the season as back up, but if the pattern holds by November, due to the failings of others he will be back in the team to widespread dismay, with disgruntled fans unwilling to give him credit for what he does well, and crying about how VAR is going to retire him.

how can you even pretend to know this?
By all accounts we simply matched their own bid which was touching 70m!

Can't you chill out over a bit of light-hearted fun? Jeez

Nothing solid to be fair, and probably just my personal bias against this deal but it has never felt like he is an absolute priority for City. Of course it highly likely I am wrong.

Let us hope this ends up better than the last 2 times we "beat" City to players, Sanchez and Fred.

As a pure defender, I'd say Smalling is a top 3 CB in the league. On the ball, Smalling is probably in the bottom 3 in terms of ability.

Mild interest is not bidding 60 million for a player
