I can't imagine what people are thinking or seeing when they think Bailly should be anywhere near the first eleven. Smalling for all his faults is still comfortably better than him. I just don't understand, what am I missing? It's like the people on here who still blindly defend Martial.
Bailly's the best one-on-one defender we have, I think, but defending is a cooperative effort and he's the worst at keeping a straight back line. We concede a lot of goals because he keeps forwards onside who wouldn't be if he was more disciplined. You could tell Lindelof was exasperated with him against Leeds.

Well put.

Also, for me, he is an 8.5/10 player. A player with leadership and organisational qualities, which make him even more effective. He will stabilise the defence and be a big plus for de Gea, who isn’t ex@ctly commanding in the 6 yard box, never mind the area. I know some don’t like this argument because they get jumpy about racism.. but I think his background, being British, furthermore, a northerner, living/playing close to his roots and family isn’t going to have his head turned easily and can become a strong character and player.

Yeah one of the major plus points is he is kind of Premier League ready made, there is no settling in period, no adjustments, he comes in and from day one improves us greatly, plus offers us a major goal threat in the opposition box.

Just the money is incredible, 80M dear me, do you remember when that bought you Ronaldo haha

Sounds like you may now have now been given a deadline, for any deal for Harry to be agreed. Which is wise for all parties I think. Ole may have patience, but we seem not to! :)

This seems to have gone very quiet at a time you'd expect it to accelerate - dead in the water or quiet before the storm?

If he wanted to leave, there would be lot of noise about it.

There are many players who are just happy to stay at their respective clubs UNLESS a better offer comes in their way. If we can't persuade a player whose playing for a club who had been kicked out of the Europa League because of FFP then I wonder whom we can attract to this club. I think it would be easier to get Romagnoli from Milan then Maguire from Leicester tbh.

Agreed. Bailly's one on on defending is top notch. He just struggles with concentration and Positioning at times, which in my opinion can be improved with training, communication and analysis.

We have wasted time with this one, seems like its now dead in the water with them wanting 80-90m cash upfront with no Bonuses, which is just ridiculous, even though I like him as a player and would have him here.

Just hope this hasn’t taken manpower away from other negotiations, would be a disaster if we don’t get anyone else in :nervous:

Madrid wanted CB and signed one from Portuguese league, Bayern signed 2 CBs, Atletico signed CB, City wants CB, Barca also wanted CB and none of them signed him or tried to sign him. Wonder why?

I have to disagree , he times his tackles horrifically and seems to give away a lot of free kicks. He’s given away penalties too from lunging in if I remember correctly, remember his red card vs Bournemouth last year?

If he improved this aspect of his game he would be a better defender IMO

I thought this was done and dusted. Did we (I) shoot our load too early?

Well, Madrid signed Eder Militao who is quite versatile something Romagnoli is not. Bayern got French international Pavard for peanuts and will probably play Hernandes (whose also versatile) as LB while Atletico signed Felipe for 18m which is waaay lower then what Romagnoli would cost. If Romagnoli moves then I think he'll cost 50m+ and he will want guarantees then he'll be first teamer.

Yes, sometimes he is too aggressive , but he doesn't get beat one on one. Sergio ramos too have most red cards in the game for those sort of tackles, the point here is if a player gets beat one on one against a top player, and Bailly is the best amongst what we have and even better than Maguire in that aspect. He has positional and concentration I'm weaknesses though and injury prone.

Madrid, Bayern don't sign players so that they can be multi functional players. Player is happy in Milan and didn't want to leave, that's why so many big clubs who all wanted or signed CB didnt sign him.

Anyways I'm done with this, which is just based on assumptions, if and buts.

Absolutely disgraceful tweet by Sky Sports. Impartial my ar$e. They truely cannot manage to cover football stories beyond 4-6 clubs.

Then we should be targeting those players before other clubs do, my point stands there's no logic in spending 80M in a player like Maguire.

We should, of course.

Identifying CBs is particularly tricky, though.

Mangala, whom City are about to release, was hyped to high heaven a few years ago - now he's considered an absolute flop.

And he's just one example.

CBs who can be classed as genuinely safe bets (all is relative) at 20 (when you can snap them up at a reasonable price) are very rare. And these days even those players are expensive - the moment a young defender gains a reputation, the price skyrockets (see De Ligt).

In other words, identifying a prospect who will likely turn into a top class CB, and who is yet to be hyped up - is far from easy.

City bid 60 million for him. The best team in the country thought he was necessary for their team. They don't NEED him, but they wanted him, so aren't willing to stump up a world record fee. We NEED him, so that's worth 20 million more. From what it sounds like Barcelona wanted De Ligt, rather than actually wanting a CB. Sometime it's best to go for a generational talent, even if there isn't a dying need.

I was talking about Romagnoli.

Well I don’t blame him for being frustrated after Rodgers essentially said we’re taking offers on him but aren’t happy and want to juice out a few more pennies.

...Maguire may be inclined into putting in a transfer request for his own sake. Leicester very much half-assing him by having one foot in and out at the same time. It’d give him certainty and get the move over with.

Agreed. What kind of message is that sending to the lad? Amateurish carry-on by Leicester, it has to be said.

They're taking the piss now. I thought we have them a clean run at Tielemans so they wouldn't try to feck us?

Yes we are taking offers for him, but, we have a valuation which United and Maguire have been told and that unless it is met he isn’t leaving, literally everyone knows this.

Stop underbidding and match it if you want him, we haven’t changed our position at all during this, it is the fact that you won’t pay what we want, you are doing the same thing to Madrid and Inter with Pogba and Lukaku, don’t go off when another club does it to you

Genuinely don't see why he doesn't put in a transfer request. If he's growing more frustrated about this and he wants to go, this is the formal, professional way to say you want to leave

We're not standing in the way of Maguire, ahead of all of this, he let us know his desires of wanting to play for X club, and agreed if the valuation is met he can go... so far United haven't met this valuation after the 1 bid!

Harry through his own choice has returned to training and requested to feature in our pre-season friendly against Scunthorpe. If he is indeed desperate to go and frustrated with Leicester on their stance, he could quite easily reduce his price by foregoing his Loyalty Bonus and handing in a transfer request. Something at present he has not yet done.

So really who is at fault for the move not going ahead? If the player is in no rush or desire to go (evidenced by lack of transfer request), then it's down to United... They've been given a figure but for whatever reason feel they can dictate how much they pay to us, this won't happen I promise you. They can either quit beating around the bush and get on with the asking price to stop both clubs and playing being in this state of limbo.... or move onto the alternative targets. He is wanted by Leicester and extremely valued, we have aspirations to progress and selling our star assets won't help us on that. That said if he wishes to go, we won't stand in his way.

Very few players submit it in writing anymore as they lose out financially

Except Maguire isn't worth the bones of 100m. We're asking for Pogba's and Lukaku's value, you lot are doubling Maguire's value.

You need to understand the difference between his market value and his worth to the club

Yes he is only worth around £50m, however, the club don’t want to sell one of their best assets, and they don’t need to sell him, so he will get an added premium.

If your house is worth £250k and someone wants to buy it, but you don't want to or need to sell, then you are going to ask for more than it is worth to make it a worthwhile deal for you to make, it is such a simple concept that so many people don’t seem to understand
