Harry Maguire | Signed

Harry Maguire is underrated on here I feel. Probably due to a hangover from England’s “Golden Genereation” being so overhyped. People are probably sick of the “English Tax” too but that’s not his fault is it?

From first seeing him at Hull there was something a bit different about a centre back of his size being so comfortable on the ball. He’s the type of player SAF would have been all over in our glory days, picking up the lower teams top players and moulding them into real United players.

Yeah we missed out when he would have been cheaper a year or two ago but stubbornness is a fools game.

We have been a mess for years but we need to start the climb back to the top somewhere and regretting the past won’t help our future.

He’s not the quickest but he’s very mobile for a guy his size, defensively solid, great in the air, decent passer and extremely comfortable on the ball.

Above all he seems to be a leader, a good lad, the type of character we currently lack........football looks to be his number one focus despite the attention he’s received since the World Cup.

Is he worth £80m? No, but no one is in reality. Football is a crazy industry involving crazy money so I think in this context, if we sign him we may look back on that in ten years as a bargain ala VVD and Rio.

I’ve got a feeling he’ll surprise a few.

Not sure what point you're trying to make. But I do believe both Konate and Tah would be much better value at 50m than Maguire is at £80m.

Agreed on Tah, I think he's the best option out there for us at the moment. Konate / Upamecano I've not see enough of, but have heard good things about both. Milenkovic also looks like the right profile player to be paired with Lindelof, which is presumably the plan.

What I'm saying I guess is that, while I think Maguire would be a very good signing, I'd be delighted to see us go for one of the many promising alternatives if the move comes to a deadlock, rather than putting all our eggs in one, slab shaped basket.

Hello. Lifelong Leicester fan here. Been reading for the last few days with interest but thought I’d sign up to share some input from our side.

First off - the newspapers are an absolute disgrace. They were desperate for Mahrez to leave and now they’re desperate to sell Maguire too. I like to think they’re bitter for us showing them up in 2016. But whatevs. With Leicester City news the only reporters I trust is John Percy from the Telegraph and *sometimes* Martin Samuel from the Mail. So it’s been quite funny watching some United fans as well as Leicester fans losing their minds over The Sun’s daily revelations.

From what I understand:
  1. We have our valuation of Maguire and we won’t budge on it.
  2. United have entered a bid that’s nowhere near.
  3. Maguire is open to a move, but is respectful and professional so won’t kick up a fuss.
I read every day things like “he’s not worth £40m let alone the £90m Leicester want” or “Leicester should sell at that”.

Two very important things to understand:
  1. We’re not Little Leicester City any more.
  2. We don’t need the money.
Leicester can’t be bullied any more. We don’t have to sell players to fund our transfer activities any more. We’re extremely ambitious and have the means to achieve them.

With what’s happening at Old Trafford, Arsenal and Chelsea, I firmly believe that Leicester can finish in the top 6 this season. I think this is what the club believes too. So for that matter I can’t see us making it easy for a rival club to buy one of our biggest assets.

Personally, I can’t see this deal going through. Especially the longer it goes on. I can see the valuation increasing the closer we get to the deadline - more or less confirmed by Brendan yesterday. The newspapers keep saying we’re after Dunk as a replacement at £45m - when really we’ve got two promising youngsters who can step up instead, so I can’t see that happening. The papers pushing us needing a replacement works in our favour, IMO.

I think Khun Top, taking after his dad, will add another £10m per week from now on, and even refusing to sell point blank 10 days or so from the deadline. Let’s face it, he learnt from the best.

Konate though looks like a great passer in addition to his defensive work.

Konate though looks like a great passer in addition to his defensive work.
Konate also fits the profile of the dominant CB due to his stature. Standing at 6'3 with great pace and strength to go with his ability in the air, makes him, along with Jonathan Tah the two standout CBs for me.

After watching both friendlies live in the flesh, the skills gap between our current CB options are

Lindelof>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bailly>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Smalling>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Jones>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rojo.

I am more convinced now that we will need a CB to play with Lindelof. If it's Maguire so be it.

Smalling, Jones, Rojo have got to go. They are so terrified whilst playing, whilst Lindelof looks like a beast yelling at people to make space, trying to playthe ball foward and overall looked like a rock in our defence.

I can now see why some people call Smalling and Jones "The chuckle brothers". They have no idea how to play together and make comical mistakes.

Lindelof and Bailly should be the starting 2 if we can't get maguire. If we do get Maguire, then it's a battle between Bailly and Maguire to play with Lindelof.

How is Skriniar impossible? Inter is in worst chape than us, we could easily convince him to join us.

Romagnoli not for less than 60M? I think you are taking the transfer amounts way to easy, consider that the most expensive defender in history is VVD for 75M, the second most expensive is Lucas Hernandez this summer for 68M. The third one is Laporte for 57M.

Not every player is above 60M, you make it sound like its peanuts. The truth is many clubs buy good defenders for way less, Barca got Lenglet for 35, Madrid got Militao for 42M, Bayern got Pavard for 35M, Milan got Bonucci for 35M and then Juve got it back for the same amount.

You make it sound like there are no options and the only way to get a decent defender is to spend 80M in someone like Maguire. Breaking the record fee for him would be like breaking the world record fee for Kane or Sterling, are they good players? yes of course they are, are they going to break the record fee when they move? of course not.

Im not saying that Maguire is a bad player, but he's definately not worth 80M.

Any way here's the list of the players I think we could get for less than 80M that would've been better or at least on the same level:

Jose Maria Gimenez
Upamecano
Hermoso
Alderweireld
Skrianiar
Umtiti

Not better, but not far away and way cheaper than 80M:

Diop
Rugani
Konate
Akanji
Yeray
Ake
Romagnoli
Dias

Agree with the above, don't understand the obsession with Maguire, you'd think he was the world's greatest defender. We seem fixated on him but there are many other options we don't seem to be interested in.
Can't our scouts recommend other option as good as or almost as good as Maguire, if they can't why are we paying them.
Leicester have a great chance to overtake us this season if they keep him so why would they sell?

Skriniar didn't want to leave Inter and he signed new contract. Same with Romangnoli and both of them will cost more than 60 million easily. Not every CB will cost 60 million but the very good ones who have proven at highest level and still young players will cost that much money. Lenglet, Pavard and Militao had release clause, which these players don't have.

Then we should be targeting those players before other clubs do, my point stands there's no logic in spending 80M in a player like Maguire.

That's a different argument, something I agree with. We should be signing players before they are signed by good players.

I absolutely hate the term ‘no value in the market’. That phrase is one of SAF’s worst legacies. There’s no such thing as value in the market. Just prices set by selling clubs and paid by buying clubs. Such a rubbish phrase that describes nothing but rolled out time and time again to describe nothing.

I hate the phrase too. We will soon be hearing it a lot I suspect.....

That "no value in the market" period was also at the time of when we let Silva/Aguero joined City and they have become this supreme powerhouse in domestic football. It also reminded us of a time that we missed out on Hazard because we refused to pay a few millions... Dark times which still hurt us even til now.

I agree if I remember correctly mate we didn't get Hazard due to a £5m payment we were not willing to give his agent. :wenger:

Or that time when we could have signed Robben, Sneijder and Toure for a combined total of less than we received for CR7

He'll come in as undisputed first choice.

my point being if Lindelof is the clear first choice atm, just by adopting the "no2" spot, maguire will always be in a battle with the third best option. Until he becomes the "no1" option.

I can't imagine what people are thinking or seeing when they think Bailly should be anywhere near the first eleven. Smalling for all his faults is still comfortably better than him. I just don't understand, what am I missing? It's like the people on here who still blindly defend Martial.

If you do buy Maguire, he will defo be your #1 CB, yes I saw the game v Leeds, and if that was anything to go by, it’s not even up for debate.

well if i could take anything away from last night Bailly and lindelof talked to each other, set up positions made some good intercepting moves. Smalling next to jones basically did there own things, barely spoke to one another, and when leeds hit a through ball, smalling and jones just stared at each other wondering whom was in the right position. They reacted to leeds attacking, Lindelof and Bailly anticipated the attack.

I'm also aware this is a maguire transfer thread, so i don't want get into a massive bailly v smalling debate. That was just my impression of watching the players live.

That he will cost more than 60 million?

I don't know about that but I think he could be available. 60m is a hell of a sum of money outside the UK especially with Milan who aren't as rich as they used to be

He said he is happy in Milan and don't want to leave.

Not better, but not far away and way cheaper than 80M:

Diop

Supposedly we made an approach for Diop and were told would cost mega bucks like, Maguire price or higher, further pursuit got dropped like a hot potato

Hope it's not going to be a repeat of when Mourinho was here where the manager wanted a CB but Woody decided they were all too expensive and we have to make do with Smalling again.

I for one are happy united is not bowing to the foxes crazy demand, Maguire is not world record fee quality. De ligt is joining Juventus for less than and De ligt is rated higher currently and potential wise than Maguire. Leicester city is just trying to squeeze as much money out of United as possible. They are better value in the market Footballing Channel tifo football did an excellent video using stats and data analysis to recommend sensible transfer options for united. And if a footballing channel can use stats, analysis and videos to come up with a list of sensible transfers what in gods name is the united scouting team which is one of the biggest in the world doing.

Tifo Recommended Ibrahime Konate, Marc-Oliver Kemp, Felix Eboa Eboa. One of Tifo's judging metric though is that they don't take into consideration brand value of the player. Something i can bet Ed Woodward takes into consideration, how much shirts this player can sell and their marketability than how good can this player perform for the club.

It's almost pointless trying to buy from PL clubs, especially mid-table ones as they have more money than ever and don't need to sell unless it's for ridiculous money. They can all see we are desperate to improve our squad and probably think they can close the gap to us or overtake us if we can't get in the right players or else they will fleece us. We need to look to Europe's best up and coming stars like they have, e.g Diop, Tielemans etc. Buying English players or PL players from other clubs means you have to pay way over the odds. It's not like it used to be when we could cherry pick the best players from the mid to lower placed teams. We need good scouting now more than ever.

I agree a complete liabilty. I also would keep Smalling over him. The first 30 minutes of the second leg against PSG tells us all we need to know about Bailly.

I really hope we have a plan B with somebody else lined up instead of Maguire as this can drag on until the final day, with Leicester then not selling.

So

So why would a club with serious ambition to challenge the top 6 entertain him?

Re Harry and the transfer speculation, lots of people are too focused on the who you are instead of the where you are currently and the market forces coupled with supply and demand.

£80 mil plus is crazy money but as stated numerous times, by many on here, we don't want too or have to sell, so anyone thinking we will be negotiated down or accept a cast off because you want rid is barking up the wrong tree.

It looks like we're about to set a time limit now to accompany our 'this is the fee, pay up or move on' stance.

It will be interesting how this unfolds, Iam confident though it will be a deal totally on our terms.

Top six will be the same as usual IMO. Leicester and Wolves fighting it out for 7th and 8th. And then the rest.

I have no issue with you boys playing hardball on Maguire. He’s your asset, under contract, and you are entitled to do that.

I don’t think he’s top class, but there’s a dearth of quality at CB in the league and he would improve us. Let’s see what happens.

If anyone listened to talksport this morning just before 6am they had a journalist on who was close to utd and.he said Leicester are after 90m and our only bid was 60m !!!

He signed a new deal last summer, we have enquired about him Inter said no, he said no to United and said he wants to stay at Inter, so I would say that is pretty impossible would you not say?

Romagnoli is arguably their best defender, they have major issues with FFP so they are going to give one of their star assets away for cheap when the prices at the moment in the market are absolutely crazy, you might make them sell for 50M at a push but that is it.

What you seem to forget is that yes all those clubs outside of England do pay less for players than they do in England, as soon as an English club, especially United, come calling the price is hiked up to a ridiculous premium, we enquired about Skriniar, 80/90M, Koulibaly 130M, even De Ligt it was 75M we were told and he goes to Juve for what 67M, the likes of Romagnoli may well go to a Juve or a Munich or Madrid for 40/50M, if United come calling every club automatically adds 10/15M to the price.

Re your list, they are all probably better than Maguire but as I said, Alderweireld would be my choice but looks Roma bound, Skriniar has no interest in coming to us, Upamecano we enquired last year and were quoted 90M plus which is ridiculous, Gimenez I would be stunned if At Madrid 1. Sold him and 2. Sold him for anything less than a mega fee considering they have just lost Godin and paid 120M for Felix.

Umtti I would take but hasn't he said he is staying at Barca and hardly played due to injuries last year.

Hermoso being honest don't know a lot about.

On your second list how many of them would need a year to adapt to England, pretty much all of them bar Ake obviously who I don't overly rate, Rugani with their CBs aging not sure they would let him go, Diop 60M not for me.

I do agree that 80M is ridiculous but there is no doubt he would come in and improve us significantly.

Plus when it comes to English teams, you really struggle to buy anyone for under 50M it seems, if you do and they come good, always seen as a very good bit of business. Market is insane and personally can only see it getting worse.

People should stop citing DeLigts price for comparison. It was a gentleman’s agreement to not price him out of a move. They didn’t want a bidding war - confirmed by CEO VDS
If there wasn’t such an agreement you can bet that he would have gone for €100m

If you’re in a market in Majorca and you offer €10 for a fake rolex and the trader says no I want €50, you don’t feck off for a week and then come back and offer €25.

You set a maximum amount your willing to pay and if you can negotiate less than that then great. If the trader is still asking for more than your maximum limit then you walk away.

Bidding for a player, having that bid rejected, then leaving it 2-3 weeks before bidding again just doesn’t make sense to me.

I know we are talking about millions of pounds, but surely the same principal applies?

People also forget that we need to register a certain amount of homegrown players. It’s alright demanding the sale of Jones, Smalling, young and Lingard, but that’s over half our homegrown quota there. They need to be replaced and I’m glad to see the club targeting the likes of AWB and Maguire over some young foreigner that may never be good enough.

Kinda agree with both sides on this I mean one he does tick a lot of boxes but is kind of a level up from what we have but a level below the VVD/De Ligt/Koulibaly level, the price is ridiculous but at the moment needs must.

If we don't get him then ok we have not paid mental money for an overpriced player but we will rock into next season with a net spend (if Rom goes) of about a tenner, as per usual and will be fighting for 4-6th again.

Part of me just wants to get the deal done, who gives a shit about the money and just sort our backline out once and for all, a midfielder or two and then I would be feeling very confident about top 4 and maybe more.

Well put.

Also, for me, he is an 8.5/10 player. A player with leadership and organisational qualities, which make him even more effective. He will stabilise the defence and be a big plus for de Gea, who isn’t ex@ctly commanding in the 6 yard box, never mind the area. I know some don’t like this argument because they get jumpy about racism.. but I think his background, being British, furthermore, a northerner, living/playing close to his roots and family isn’t going to have his head turned easily and can become a strong character and player.

We were probably sitting back waiting to see if De Ligt to Juventus fell through, for some reason, and will pull the trigger on Maguire today or tomorrow.
